Crow spirit animal and

totem meaning

Crow Spirit AnimalBy Elena Harris, SpiritAnimal.com Editor

The crow is a spirit animal associated with life mysteries

and magic. The power of this bird as totem and spirit

guide is provide insight and means of supporting

intentions. Sign of luck, it is also associated with the

archetype of the trickster; be aware of deceiving

appearances. If the crow has chosen you as your spirit or

totem animal, it supports you in developing the power of

sight, transformation, and connection with life’s magic.

The Crow, a Spirit Animal Symbolic of Magic

Crows are commonly associated with magic and the power to

manipulate physical appearances. Ted Andrews in his classic on animal totems “Animal Speak”

mentions that we can find crows are common animals that we can find all around the globe. As

such, they are a reminder that magic is everywhere. When you encounter a crow, just tune into its

behavior and it will give you a clue on how to use the magic powers it carries.

Because of its affinity with life mysteries and magic, the crow is seen in many shamanic traditions

as the spirit animal of choice for those who use magic and have the power to manipulate the law of

our physical universe. The crow used to be the animal of choice of shamans, those who do

witchcraft and shape-shifting.

Crow Symbolism and Life Mysteries

symbolic of the onset of creation, of the void or what has not taken form yet. Fascinating spirit

animals, they carry the energy of life mysteries and the power for deep inner transformation.

As a spirit guide, the crow will guide you in getting in touch with life mysteries and develop your

ability to perceive subtle shifts in energy within yourself and in your environment. It has the ability

to go beyond the illusions, especially duality of right and wrong, inner and outer.

Crow Totem and Power of Insight

Crows are known to build their nests in very tall trees. Doing so, they can get a better vision or

perspective on the rest of their surroundings. By affinity with this trait, those who have the crow as

a spirit animal or totem will enjoy a position from where they can see things from a higher

perspective.

The crow is also watchful of intruders and predators. The sound it makes is characteristic of a

loud, strident bird noise that can warn the other members of it clan over great distance. When you

see your crow spirit animal, be on the watch.

The Crow Spirit Animal, a Guide about Fearlessnessand DeterminationHave you ever watched a group of crows ganging up together and chasing out birds much bigger

than they are? This behavior makes the crow a useful animal totem to call when you need support

in dealing with adversity. If the crow chose you as your power animal, you are encouraged to

develop your personal will power and speak your truth more loudly.

Crows always seem to be able to get away with what they are after, be it a piece of food left on the

road or sneaking into other birds’ nests to steal or eat their eggs. Echoing this trait, those with the

crow as totem or spirit guide might watch for the tendency to trick or be a bit manipulative.

I went through a terribly scary stage, when I was suffering from post natal

depression – admittedly I was slightly delusional at times…but there were also real

things happening to me. There were crows following me everywhere I went…to be

honest it put the fear of God in me because I just didn’t understand why. I had a

christian upbringing – then got into spiritualism and white witch craft – it was when I

decided to become a christian again that all these weird things happened and I

sensed I could hear voices in heaven and hell. does anyone know what all of this

meant? Was I being judged?

Yesterday I was leaving a friends and saw two crows going after a baby hawk while

it’s Mother flew above attempting to scare away the crows. The crows prevailed and

brought the crow to the north of the house. The mother remained soaring above the

three smaller birds before flying off to the west. It took my breath away watching

this. This is a new year, I was collecting the last remnants of a home I once lived

and have had a series of deaths to friends around me. I will contemplate this more

but would love to hear your thoughts.

Interesting that crow came up after taking the quiz. I never thought of a crow as a

possible guide for me. After reading about them, I realize that’s exactly what I’m

needing right now, especially the part of dealing with adversity and speaking MY

truth louder. Thanks for the unexpected insight!

I’m thrilled to find out I’m a crow. For all you ‘Game of Thrones’ (aka “A Song of Ice

and Fire’) fans out there, you know the significance of the (three eyed) crow in the

story. It’s not the animal I would have guessed, but does seem to fit my personality

and outlook.

was not just a pet she became the center of our household. it wasw great to hear

her feet pattering across the roof and to come out with her there to great me.

There are few creatures on terra who can evoke such mind tingling responses.

Crows/Ravens have been my spirit/focus animal every since i almost died to a sliced

artery in my bicep and when i woke in the hospital, there was a crow outside my

window seemingly staring at me. Enlightenment and the desire to be more spiritually

aware soon came into my personality along with other changes. I am so thankful for

the bird that I ended up here with all of you!

When I was living in the city, there were tens of thousands of crows flying over my

roof every night. Before I moved to that house, the crows had been diving at me

and my previous house had been completely swarmed by crows, but only for about

one month.

In addition to that, many strange events were taking place, and many people who

were close with those around me were dying. It was certainly a time when I was

learning to be more aware of death, because before that I had been very naive and

Page 4: Crow Spirit Animal _ Meaning & Symbolism

1/22/2014 Crow Spirit Animal | Meaning & Symbolism

http://www.spiritanimal.info/crow-spirit-animal/ 4/11

never really had it close to me before, by the grace of God.

Anyways, the crows were acting very strange. They were very noisy. Somehow, they

scared me a lot, and sometimes there were hundreds all around the house.

Then, a friend who was often at the house, who had also been there the year

before, said to me, “Are the crows acting strangely right now?” We were on the topic

of birds. And I said, “Yes, how did you know that?” And he told me that a crow had

died there a couple of years before, and since then they always came back in

March and swarmed around and acted strangely. By strangely, I mean they would

dive, and get together and swarm in groups and make a lot of noise, and fly in weird

patterns- it is hard to precisely describe, but it was very noticeable at the same time.

A couple of weeks lately, I saw a dead crow on the neighbours lawn.

Anyways, soon after that I was living in the other house- the one where about 20

000 crows flew over every night. It took about 10 minutes. It just didn’t seem right.

They were all nesting close to where I lived, but were angry because their roost had

been cut down last summer to build a Costco. Poor crows.

The crows began to freak me out. I saw dead ones regularly. There were many that

were covered in tufts of feathers. I kept seeing crows that couldn’t walk and were

stuck immobile in the grass, but I couldn’t help them because I didn’t understand

their problem. Also, it seemed like the roles that had once been filled by other birds,

such as robins, were now overtaken by crows- they were the only birds I saw

searching for worms at the park.

On the radio, I heard about crows falling out of the sky, dead, midflight, 50 or 60 at a

time, in Manitoba and Prince George.

Basically, the whole thing was getting crazy.

Then, I decided to leave the city. It wasn’t just the crows, but I felt that it was an

indication- how disturbed I was by them- that I was very deeply disturbed within

myself.

And as soon as I left the city, the fear stopped. I made peace with the crows- there

are about 30 that live in my yard, but they seem kind now, watchful and cheerful.

And of course, these are different crows.

Anyways, the crows were testing me. For whatever reason, I wasn’t ready for the

test. But now I know. And I thought it would be helpful, perhaps, to pass along that

insight.

So perhaps, if your intention is not clear enough, and your commitment to

completing your intention, the crows may be testing you too, to see if you are

directed enough to withstand any kind of distraction.

That is the insight I have gained into the matter. I really love crows, they are such

an intelligent and playful mystery. I feel like I learned a lot from the crows, even if I

was distracted at the time.

With love,

G.

We have many crow around where I live but when they start flying in front of your

car; guiding you down the road, flying over to the trash can next to your car while

you are waiting in Mc Donalds line to order and they start jabbering to you….that is

a totem. I’d say Crow is one of my totems. My husband used to feel it superstitious

My stepson died in September. I live in Mauritius, and whilst we have a lot of birds in

the garden, I had never seen a crow. I heard their call, and when I looked outside,

there were three of them sitting on the electricity wire facing our house. Six weeks

later, my husband died of a heart attack on his son’s birthday. A few weeks later, I

heard the crows again, and this time, one kept flying around our house in circles.

What does this mean? I haven’t seen them since.

I have always been really good with birds, like they would follow me and talk to me, I

always could tell there emotions and personalities within seconds but Latley I’m able

to spot crows everywhere. (I live next to a beach in Australia and you hardly find any

crows in my area). There are always crow following me when I’m at school

. The crows at the school have been taken away several times but come back within

a matter of days. One time I was sitting by myself and a crow came up and sat next

to me when I’m with friendsand crows come up to me they try to attac my friends a

My husband died in June of this year (2013) and ever since, I have had about 1-2

dozen crows hanging out around the house and trees. I really like them and

understand that they are very intelligent animals. My dog was the one who

discovered my hubby, probably within 15 minutes of his passing suddenly in bed. I

feel like I need to communicate with these crows and that they are trying to say

something to me. It is cold and frozen here, but I would dearly like to feed them- I

wonder how many unwanted critters would show if I threw out corn. Does anyone

know if this is an empathetic or protective response from these birds? I don’t fill my

feeders (no money) and see no other birds this winter. I feel like they are here for a

reason.

Karen,

I only want to say this…When an animal teacher comes to you, you do not

need other people to tell you how to behave to them or what they are trying

to say. There are no easy answers and no easy way to get them. You must

listen, and watch, and be patient. Just as if you were talking to another

person and asking them to explain something to you. Sometimes you don’t

understand the answer because it was not the message you expected or

wanted. There is no easy way to walk a spiritual path. You walk it because

you must. Listen and ask and wait. All things come in the fullness of time.

I give my crows left over catfood (wet food, not kibbels) which has no salt or

sugar which is not good for wild animals in any way. I have a plastic saucer

(like an old frisbee turned upside down) which I tied onto the top of the fence

in my backyard so other critters can’t get at it. Works well and keeps the trash

from getting smelly too fast. Try left overs -rinsed off to get the salt off.

Spaghetti is hysterical, they can’t judge the additional weight of the portion

that hangs down when they try to take as much as they can get in their

beaks, almost doing a sommersalt at take off. One time deal though, next

time they knew to grab less!!! Crows are territorial and don’t like to share with

others than their mate, so chances are you’ll have a resident pair with time.

Crows are mystical creatures. When I was young our family dog would play in the

yard with a pet crow, of a friend who would bring his crow over to visit. Our dog and

the crow loved each other and it was amazing to see them playing together. I see

crows alot, living in New England. They give us messages when they are spotted in

groups, or alone, and offer us a chance to connect our lives to theirs if we choose.

The other day I wondered why I have not ever seen dead crows on the road or

anywhere for that matter? Maybe they have special place(s) where they go to pass.

It’s very weird, I see crows every day, typically in groups of threes or fives. When I

do not see them in threes or fives and other numbers my intuition always acts up,

as though I’m going into a situation that I cannot control completely. I am trying to

figure out if this has anything to do with the clair-senses, I don’t truly understand

why but as soon as I’ve started to see this crows, my clair-senses have been most

active. I have been able to see “energy waves” (that best describes what I see, and

it’s weird because they always catch my eyes), also this annoying ringing in my ear

has been happening for the last 3 months I want to say. I have felt pain, as though it

was someone else’s, but I’m a bit skeptical about the afterlife. Am I beginning to be

able to see the afterlife, or am I just going nuts, if anyone could give me some input.

But crows tend to try to grab my attention when I’m outside in the open, such as

knocking on trees, or calling others. Which I’ll see flocks afterwards. Like one

commenter said, just one day they were surrounded around my whole house, in all

the trees and on the roofs just knocking and “cawing,” ever since this experience I

feel some kind of connection to them. Anyone have any insight? Oh another thing

also, I had ladybugs follow me for about 7-8 months until crows started to appear,

now I no longer see ladybugs daily, just crows. (BTW, I just heard a whisper to

mention I am “opened,” whatever that means.) Please if anyone could help!

There are no “rules” really, so I’d say just go with it – crows are intelligent and

sociable even with humans; they’re just crows and part of nature, not spooky,

not bad. They know when you like them back, so it sounds nice to have

I have had crows above my bedroom on the roof and above my window now for

about a month. I can only tell that it’s crow because of the hopping sound when it

walks around. It does a number of things. always in the morning as I am waking up.

It scrapes its beak, taps hard, taps light, claws-up the shingles, and hops. Never

caws though. Today, it followed me to my bathroom on the roof. I look always before

I leave for work for damage. Today I looked for Mr. Crow. Nowhere to be found. I

sure hope that this isn’t a message of death. Why is it when I am waking up? Why is

it messing with me? I think that there might be two of them. Sometimes it sounds

really aggressive up there on my roof. Sounds like the crow is trying to get in or

something. Never any damage. One time it was a woodpecker. and also a cat really

wanted to get in a few different times from the first floor apartment. I live on the third

floor—the top. What the H___ is going on?

Crows have been around me since I was a child..chattering ..talking. The first time I

heard one trying to literally say hello was after my mothers death..I was sitting

outside and thinking of her and wondered if she was communicating to me. Life is

wild these days and I’m on the journey of remaking myself although keep repeating

the same patterns..feeling the heaviness of this today at times and thinking of my

living situation, with a roomie whom I dont feel all that safe around…there is simply

something about him I do not trust. Lots of healing up around trusting myself and

sharing my voice and gifts. While thinking this I was walking outside in fresh snow

(following a nice storm) and had a beautiful and humorous walk as I love nature and

weather. The roomie stuff came in and out along the walk and while it was in… I

looked down and there, nestled atop the snow at the roadside was a large raven,

he was very recently dead (walked over the same spot an hour earlier and he wasnt

there) He was fully intact and just beautiful and while I was shocked I also felt as

though I were being given a dear gift. Thought of my mother. So I picked him up and

he seemed to warm my body and settle my thoughts – he is buried outside in a

snow bank for the moment, amidst the trees Im sure he often sat in. I’d like some

objective feedback on this…oh..also in the past I have worked closely with the

dying..for many years, and part of my remake has been taking some distance from

that owing to grief and burn out and wondering what next? (been wondering for a

few years now..and struggling). THank you and blessings.

I have a Crow thats been coming around a lot lately. It all started when I was driving

down my street and an appartmnet complex near mine was suround by at least 100

plus crows… it was an amazing thing to see… the sound was defining.. when I

stopped and rolled down my window they all looked at me and stopped making

noise…. one then squawked and flew and landed in front of my car… I had to go to

work so I started to go and he wouldn’t move.. so I went around him.. standing his

ground and watching me I smiled and said have a great day crow and it then flew

back with the others… now I feel as if that crow has been following me every

where… I’m dealing with some family issues at the time so maybe it feels it needs to

watch me? Always in view of my windows and always talks to me after I get home

from work…. I figured it was just the time of year but I’ve always felt something for

crows I don’t know what it is maybe respect of some sort… I always see them in 3′s

but this one is alone and sometimes talks to another far away. Any insight to this?
