A BENEFIT DINNER FOR

As an academic institution, Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL) upholds a collective belief that there is a need to contribute to the growth and development of societies and industries through the application of expert knowledge. Hence, the Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement (CSCE) manages the community development and corporate social responsibility initiatives of MCL to fulfill this mandate. CSCE’s work is carried out by providing a platform for integrated learning opportunities for MCL students, administrators, faculty members, staff, and related stakeholders to foster excellence and virtue in community service. Ultimately, the goal is to continuously facilitate service-learning and community engagement initiatives through conscious and sustainable efforts inspired by the spirit of volunteerism and a strong commitment to service and development.

In the pursuit of promoting sustainability, the institution instills among its stakeholders the value of partnership and collaboration. Sustainable community development does not happen overnight. It is also not something that could be single-handedly achieved by a select few. It is a concerted effort by groups of people to effectively and efficiently impact change.

In addition, sustainability can only be pursued by developing a mindset of collective action. The idea that any initiative would not amount to anything if people will not commit to delivering outcomes should also be emphasized in this regard. On top of united efforts and action, strong values as well as a genuine desire to contribute to the society should also be a major driving force for change to actually take place.

With this in mind, initiatives were undertaken to ensure that the institution’s annual objectives are met accordingly. Stronger ties between MCL and its partner communities were forged. Bigger opportunities were explored and, together with other stakeholders, community engagement and service-learning projects and programs were delivered. In addition, the learner-centered outcomes-based approach of MCL allows its students, faculty members, staff, and administrators to participate in the conception, implementation, and evaluation of these initiatives. As a result, over 50,000 beneficiaries from various community partners have been reached over the course of one academic year.

Considering all of these, it is always important to point out that the initiatives carried out by the institution is built on a shared sense of responsibility of upholding the value of excellence and virtue in community service. This further establishes MCL’s commitment to work closely with its partners as well as a heartfelt desire to instill and affect change. The institution continues to pursue BIGGER and BETTER initiatives TOGETHER with stakeholders who share the same desire of addressing the needs of the society. As with previous years, MCL pushes forward to implement initiatives that are rooted upon collaboration and well-meaning efforts that would continue to exemplify MCL’s commitment to serve---hands together and hearts all in.

Providing a platform from which service-learning and community engagement initiatives can be sustainably implemented is one of CSCE's most important priorities. The Hand & Heart Project builds on all the previous service-learning and community development initiatives of MCL. The various programs, colleges, and departments of MCL conceptualized and implemented projects and activities that address the needs of the community while highlighting strengths according to their fields of expertise. The initiatives implemented under the umbrella of the Hand & Heart Project also focus on emphasizing collaborative and inter-disciplinary action.

The College of Arts and Science (CAS) continued its previous efforts and has focused on delivering socio-capacity building initiatives such as reading, writing, and community theater workshops; content training for teachers and students; and, development of learning materials. In addition, general environmental awareness seminars were also conducted by CAS.

The College of Computer and Information Science (CCIS) focused on developing its previous efforts of promoting IT literacy among partner communities. Public school teachers from various partner communities were given trainings and workshops depending on their specific needs. CCIS also continued to maintain and develop website hosting projects that provided platform for online connectivity to partner communities.

The College of Maritime Education and Training (CMET) delivered projects and programs that addressed environmental and social needs. These initiatives focused on providing trainings and workshops for environmental stewardship and leadership. In partnership with various organizations, CMET also conducted blood donation drives and medical missions.

The E.T. Yuchengco College of Business (ETYCB) concentrated on implementing initiatives that would help partner communities build their skills thereby helping in improving their livelihood. Workshops and seminars on housekeeping, tour guiding, and basic finance and accounting were conducted. Moreover, ETYCB raised funds to help partner communities with infrastructure needs.

The Mapúa Institute of Technology at Laguna (MITL) delivered projects and programs that addressed the infrastructure and socio-capacity building needs of partner communities. These initiatives include workshops and trainings as well as infrastructure design and building. Emphasis is given to equipping the partner communities with technical know-how for long-term viability.

The Senior High School (SHS) Department implemented initiatives that exposed the students to the various needs of the community. These projects and programs provided a platform that allowed the students to engage in community service activities aligned to their courses and fields of expertise.

The Institute for Excellence in Continuing Education and Lifelong (I-EXCELL), along with the various student organizations of MCL, also implemented initiatives that allowed the students to focus on their respective disciplines and capacity.

Overall, various service-learning and community engagement initiatives were implemented under the umbrella of the Hand & Heart Project. The activities conducted may vary accordingly but the focus remained on forging effective partnerships and conquering the challenges embedded in pursuing community development. Collectively, these embody MCL’s commitment to pursue BIGGER and BETTER initiatives---TOGETHER with our partner communities.
