CSCU Pathway Transfer A. S. Degree: Criminology Studies

Addendum

and

Justification for Designated General Education Courses

Draft October 5, 2015

The Criminology Studies Transfer Pathway provides a common pathway for students graduating with an

A. S. degree from the Connecticut Community Colleges and transferring to one of the CSUs or Charter

Oak.

The Criminology Studies pathway is one route to five very different degrees. First of all, Criminal Justice

and Criminology are, in many ways, very different fields. They have different histories and different

purposes. The pathway work group had to balance these two divergent histories and purposes.

Secondly, the pathway has to weave together one program oriented toward a 60-credit career degrees

in Criminal Justice with another program aiming at a 120-credit degree in Criminology.

An additional challenge has been the different types of CSU programs: CCSU offers a BA in Criminology;

ECSU offers a BA in Sociology with a Criminology minor; SCSU offers a BA in Sociology with a Criminal

Justice concentrations; and WCSU offers a degree in Justice and Law Administration through its Business

School. In addition, ECSU is developing a BA in Criminology. These widely different programs reflect the

different staffing conditions of the four institutions and their evolving ability to meet student needs.

(For simplicity's sake, this document will refer to all 5 four-year programs as "Criminology" programs.)

The Criminology Studies Pathway has to prepare Community College students for each of these

programs simultaneously. As a result, courses taken in this proposed pathway will be received at the five

institutions in very different ways.

Please note. In the proposed Criminology Studies Pathway, line 25 provides a working list of CJS and CJS-

related courses from which a student can choose. Including these courses in the pathway ensures the

CJS programs remain viable and provides students the needed flexibility enumerated above.

The TAP Criminology workgroup recommends that 3 specific general education courses be designated in

the Framework 30. These designated courses are important to the success of our students transferring

seamlessly and completing the A. A./B. A. degrees in a timely manner.

ENG 101 Composition: This course is a standard required course for students to complete their

Written Competencies in the Framework 30 as well as possible additional general education

courses. It is recommended as the Written Communications I course.

MAT 167/MAT 168 Principles of Statistics: This course is required by all CSU/COSC Criminology

programs and is a prerequisite for the research and methods courses. Because the

Framework30 requires only one Quantitative Reasoning course, designating this competency

prevents students from needing to take an additional Mathematics courses before beginning

their upper-division work at the CSUs/COSC.

SOC 101 Principles of Sociology OR PSY 111 General Psychology: SOC 101 course is required in

the Criminology programs at ECSU and SCSU, but not CCSU and WCSU. PSY 111 is required at

WCSU. Both are in the Pathway60; they will, however, be received differently at the four

campuses.

By designating one or the other in the Framework, students will have remaining credits for

beginning their foreign language requirements.
