CTERA High Level Architecture Introduction


• NAS (Network Attached Storage): a dedicated hard disk storage device that is set up with its own network address and provides file-based data storage services to other devices on the network

• CIFS (Windows File Sharing): An enhanced version of the Microsoft Server Message Block (SMB) protocol, CIFS is a native file-sharing protocol in Windows OS

Terms and Definitions

• Data deduplication: A specialized data compression technique for eliminating duplicate copies of repeating data. The technique is used to improve storage utilization and can also be applied to network data transfers to reduce the number of bytes that must be sent

• Cloud Attached Storage® : combines a NAS appliance in your local network with online cloud services. File sharing is performed on the local network, while cloud storage services are used for off-site backup and disaster recovery.

• RAID: a category of disk drives that employ two or more drives in combination for fault tolerance and performance

– RAID0 (striped): Data is distributed across multiple disks, in a method called striping

– RAID1 (Mirrored): Data is duplicated across all disks in the array, so that there is full redundancy

– RAID5 (Striping with distributed parity): RAID5 requires three or more disks, and combines striping with distributed parity to protect against data loss

– RAID6 (Striping with dual distributed parity): RAID6 is similar to RAID5; however, it uses dual parity to enable the array to survive two disk failures, without data loss

RAID 5 and 6 are supported on C400 and C800/C800+ appliances.


– Cloud Snapshots

Cloud snapshot are states of a system at a particular point in time that are stored online using CTERA’s Cloud Backup service. They are automatically generated with each cloud backup operation. Cloud snapshots can be accessed via the CTERA Portal.

– NEXT3™ Volume Snapshots

NEXT3 volume snapshots are stored locally and can be accessed at local speeds. NEXT3 snapshots are faster to access locally than cloud snapshots, regardless of the number of stored snapshots. Arrays: On the appliance, storage is divided into RAID arrays, each of which consists of one or more physical hard drives. • When defining an array you can choose from

the following array types:JBOD, RAID0 (Striped), RAID1 (Mirrored)

• Each provides a different method of data distribution, resulting in various degrees of storage reliability and array capacity



Each array is divided into volumes, which are logical partitions on the array• You can choose to make the

volumes ,encrypted via AES-256 CBC ESSIV• Volume encryption is supported both for

standalone volumes and volume spanning entire RAID arrays

Notes: In C400/C800 the maximum volume size is 16TB. The system allows to configure up to 8 volumes per device



You can use Network Attached Storage (NAS) volumes:• A NAS volume is a volume that is

formatted with the NEXT3 file system– NEXT3 was developed by CTERA to

add flexible snapshots to Linux EXT3, along with easy transition from and to EXT3

– The appliance enables you to take snapshots of NAS volumes

• C200 acts as a File Server (NAS)



You can take Snapshots of NAS NEXT3 volumes:• A volume snapshot is a read-only

copy of a volume as it was at a particular point in time

• You can use snapshots to access previous versions of your volumes and the files contained therein

• You can schedule Automatic Daily Snapshots or Take Snapshots Manually

First, we will create a new NAS volume:

1. In the Storage > Volumes tab, click New

2. Choose the Storage Device, Volume Size, NAS as Volume Type, and check Support Snapshots. Click Next and then Next again

3. Type in the Volume Name: NAS1 and click Next

4. The new NAS volume will be formatted with the NEXT3 file system

5. The Formatting Status will be displayed in the Storage > Volumes pane

Next, we will create a New User:1. Click the New User button in the Users tab 2. Enter Username: <your_name> and

password: ctera123 3. Click Next

First, install the Agent:1. Go to Local Backup > CTERA Agents2. Click on Download Agent > Windows3. Click Run to confirm installation of the MSI4. Click Next and follow the setup wizard

your User credentials to the C200.

2. Click “Sign In”

3. When connected, right-click the Agent Icon in the taskbar and Click Settings...

Next, override the default global settings and Enable file-level backup for the agent:4. Click Override In the File-Level Backup tab

You can globally configure default branding settings for all virtual portals, by specifying:• A virtual portal skin with your company logo

To create a skin (Instructor Demo):• Request a basic skin from CTERA support• Extract the ZIP file that you received• Edit the HTML and CSS files as desired• Replace the graphic files as desired• Put the changed files back in the ZIP file• Change the ZIP file's extension to “.skin”

Branding: Uploading Skins

To upload a skin, use the Skin Upload Wizard (Instructor Demo):• Select and Upload the .skin file• Once the skin is uploaded, you can apply it to

all virtual portals in the system

The current skin can be locally overridden

Staff Administrator

Log in to the Staff Administrator panel:• Your instructor will provide you with login

credentials

• Point your browser to https://training.ctera.me/staff

• Log in with the credentials you were provided with

Creating a New Plan

Create a new plan:• Go to the Provisioning -> Plans tab.

• Click on New Plan

• Enable all the Services to be included in the plan

• Click Next

Enter the Plan Details:• Enable the checkbox to Allow

users to join this plan

• Enable the Free Trial and enter 30 days




Create the Snapshot Retention Policy:• Set the retention of the daily, weekly and

monthly snapshots

• Set the quarterly and Yearly snaphot retention to zero

• Click Next




Define the Plan Name and Description:• Set the Plan Name

• Set the Display Name (optional)

• The Sort Index is an optional field used to enable custom sorting of the subscription plans displayed to end users in the Subscribe to Plan wizard

• Enter a Description ,click Preview and then click Next




Set plan’s quotas and licenses:• Set the Storage Size in GB

• Set the Number of Server Agent Licenses

• Set the Workstation Backup Licenses

• Set the Appliance Licenses and click Next

• Click Finish



Apply the new plan to the user accounts you’ve created in the previous labs:• Click Apply Provisioning Changes in the

Provisioning -> Plans tab

• The Update Process will apply the changes to your user accounts

• Click Close when the process is completed

Create a new Add-on, which provides additional Cloud Attached Storage Services to your accounts:• Click New in the Provisioning -

> Add-Ons tab

• Enable the services you’d like to add according to the Table, and click Next

Provide Name and Duration to the add-on:• Set a Name and Display Name• Set the Number Of Days for the add-on to Expire• Click Next• Set the Add-On:

• Server Agent Licenses• Workstation Backup Licenses• Appliance Licenses• Click Next and Finish • Click on Apply Provisioning Changes

to update the user accounts


Creating a Configuration Template

Define a new Configuration Template:• Go to the Settings -> Configuration

Templates tab

• Click on New Template

The New Configuration Template screen will open:• In the General tab, enter a Name

and Description for the new template



In the Backup Sets tab:• Click New and create a new Backup

Set, like you’ve learned in Lesson 3




In the Backup Schedule tab:• Click Manage

• Define the Cloud Backup Schedule, like you’ve learned in Lesson 3

• Click Save




The new template will appear in the Configuration Templates List:• Click Set Default

• A check Icon will indicate that the template is now the Default Template
