Possessive pronouns help us to say who the owner of something is,

without repeating the name of that object.

    Examples:

This is MY T-shirt. This T-shirt is MINE. (I don’t have to repeat “my T shirt ” )

That is LUCIA’S bag. That bag is HERS. (Lucia’s)

    I. Read the text and then answer the questions.

    Clothes

Clothing is something we all should wear in order to fit in to society. The act ofwearing clothing is a choice in some indigenous societies while in a more modern culture

you could find yourself in trouble with the police if you choose not to wear clothes.Clothes are easily accessible and can be bought in most high street shops. Supermarketsare also beginning to sell clothes. Clothes are for keeping people warm or serving as

protection from the strong burning sun. Certain items of clothing can be expensive, especially if it is made by a well-known brand or is a particular design. While clothing isaffordable for most people, the price usually depends on the quality of the material usedto make the item and its brand name. In most countries clothing is taxed, while food isnot. This is probably because clothing can be considered as a luxury item, especially if itis of very good quality.

The type of clothing that is worn usually depends on the occasion. People thatattend a wedding usually wear formal clothes. Men often wear suits and women weardresses. Formal and smart clothing is often worn in times of celebration. People oftenwear different clothing at work. Some jobs require people to wear a special uniformwhich should be worn by all employees. A pilot, doctor or air hostess may be required towear a uniform so that all the staff can be easily recognized. Other jobs are less strictand may allow people to wear casual clothes. Construction workers are usually asked towear protective clothing, especially when the site is considered highly dangerous.

People often choose to wear comfortable clothing inside their own home. Thischoice of clothing may be very different to the clothing they would normally wearoutside. Some people even stay in their bedclothes all day on the weekend when they planto relax and not go anywhere. People often wear clothing which matches their currentstate of health or their age. Pregnant women are likely to wear baggy clothes, while

youths often wear tighter clothing to show their figure. Younger females often wear highheeled shoes while elderly people tend to wear more comfortable shoes which will allow

    them to walk with ease.

5.3 Talking about how we move around

The Simple Present tense is the grammatical structure used to describe dailyroutines. Its basic arrangement is like this:

     AFFIRMATIVE

I get up at 6:30am every day.

We have breakfast very early on Saturdays.

    subject + verb + complement

We add “s” on the verbs when the subject is it, she or he.

      She takes the subway.

      Amanda reads the newspaper.

It snows a lot in Boston.

    Special cases

    Have - Has

    Do - Does

    Go - Goes

     NEGATIVE

I DON’T have breakfast on weekends.

We DON’T   take the subway to go to class.

Subject + DO / DOES NOT + verb + complement

As you can see, the negative form is formed by DO or DOES + NOT . In the case ofDOES, it is used when the subject is HE - SHE –  IT (third person singular) and the verb

doesn’t have the “s” of the affirmative form.

      She DOESN’T  drink  coffee.

Joey DOESN’T  have  lunch at the office.

It DOESN’T  rain  much in Calama.

    INTERROGATIVE

DO  you go running on weekends?

DOES  Kelly leep late on Saturdays?

    DO / DOES + subject + verb + complement

    The short answer would be:

Yes, I DO (go running on weekends) / No, I DON’T  (go running on weekends).

Yes, she DOES (sleep late on Saturdays) / No, she DOESN’T  (sleep late onSaturdays).

As you can see, questions start with the auxiliary DO  or DOES, depending on your subject.Following previous rules, HE – SHE – IT take the form DOES. In this case the verb doesn’thave the “s” of the affirmative form.

DOES Paula likeS chocolates? Yes, she does. / No, she doesn’t.

DOES Simon workS at the hospital? Yes, he does. / No, he doesn’t.

    5.4 Time

Let’s go back a little and remember questions using the simple present. Look at the

examples and then do the exercises below.

Does Andres go to football matches?

    Do they know me?

Does it bite? I mean, the dog?

Does Alejandra work in a clinic?

     Does Maite like Pepa Pig?

These kinds of questions are called closed questions, because there are only two possibleanswers: “yes” or “no”.
