Coventry University has validated all of our awards, so you can be confident that you are studying at university level and be assured that the content is of high quality.

We will regularly provide updates on how Coventry University College is developing on our website www.coventry.ac.uk/cuc. Or follow us on Facebook or Twitter. I look forward to keeping you updated, and hope to welcome you on to one of our courses in 2015/2016.

    John Dishman

    Director and Chief Executive

    Welcome to Coventry

    University College

We offer a new concept in higher education that is designed to integrate study into the life that you lead. If you are looking to benefit from high quality courses but have decided that the traditional student experience is not for you, then Coventry University College could be the answer.

This prospectus is your guide to how Coventry University College will operate, the full course offering, the fees, costs and payment options available and what your next steps might be.

Coventry University College offers a range of academic qualifications in a variety of subject areas. Our Foundation Year courses are ideal for those who need or want an alternative route in to higher education. Once successfully completed, the foundation year will provide a route in to a range of further study within Coventry University College or progression to courses at Coventry University, or another university of your choice, subject to meeting the entry requirements.

We also offer HNCs, HNDs and Honours Degree courses, so you can choose to sign up for a degree at the outset or build up to a degree by taking the HNC, then HND and then top up to a degree. By taking one level at a time you can spread your progression over a fixed period to fit in with your other commitments.

Most of our courses have been designed around the standards for professional body accreditation, which means that you will be prepared and have the opportunity to secure an additional award from a professional body alongside your normal studies. This will help to make you more attractive to employers when you apply for jobs.

We have designed the courses so that you are able to study in short, intensive six-week blocks. Assessment will take place at the end of each block so you can monitor your progress. You can study on a full-time or part-time basis, and we will have our own team of staff to support you in your studies. We will help you match the pace of your study to fit in with the demands on you outside college.

Gaining higher-level skills and qualifications is really important, but sometimes it can be difficult or virtually impossible to fit traditional study into your life. Thats why weve designed this new approach to learning. Coventry University College is designed specifically for people who want to benefit from high quality courses but who have decided that the traditional student experience is not for them.

We provide a focused teaching and learning environment that will lead to academic and professional qualifications. And this is precisely where our commitment lies.

    Employability

As well as making sure that our courses meet the criteria for an academic qualification wherever possible we have designed our course around the standards for professional qualifications. We want every single student that leaves Coventry University College to have the relevant skills and knowledge that will help them secure employment in their chosen profession so you have the potential to achieve an academic qualification plus a professional qualification, which could help make you even more attractive to employers.

    Flexibility

We offer a structured teaching week with the flexibility to choose morning or afternoon classes, wherever possible and numbers permitting, to help you study around your other commitments. This can be an ideal option if you are a mature student returning to education or need to fit your studies around your job.

Coventry University College puts you in charge. You manage your studies to suit your work responsibilities, your personal commitments, your lifestyle working towards an academic qualification is challenging but it shouldnt be a chore.

    Quality of teaching

Our course teams contain both academics and practising professionals. Their aim is to work together to help you discover your subject from all angles, the theory and the practice. And unlike many other institutions, our tutors maintain high levels of class contact and offer support to help ensure you are learning throughout your time at Coventry University College.

Coventry University validates all of our awards, so you can be confident that you are studying at university level and be assured that the content is of high quality.

    Affordability

The fees that you pay at Coventry University College are lower than those at many other comparable institutions. Fees cover all of your classes, online tutorials, some of the learning materials and access to the College Learning Resource Centre. As a student at Coventry University College you also have reading rights to Coventry University Library.

We firmly believe that Coventry University College gives you access to a quality and relevant learning experience at a price that represents excellent value for money. We also believe that you will be able to judge the returns on your investment through your improved career prospects.

Courses designed to suit you8 | Coventry University College Prospectus 2014

    Degrees

All of our teaching has been designed to be available face to face on campus for full-time students.

Our courses run in six-week blocks and we offer up to six of these each calendar year. Normally you will study four blocks per year.

4 blocks will lead to a Foundation Year (120 credits) or an HNC (120 credits at level 4) over 1 year

8 blocks will lead to an HND (240 credits at levels 4 and 5) over 2 years

12 blocks will lead to an Honours Degree (360 credits at levels 4, 5 and 6) over 3 years.

This means that you will be able to pace your progress.

Each learning block will require approximately the equivalent of 300 hours of your time. Normally, 120 of these will be in class and the rest is completed away from the classroom. All study is guided so youll have plenty of support.

    Full-time study

As a full-time student a normal learning block will mean that you get 18 hours of teaching each week in groups of approximately 25-50 students. Depending on the course you have chosen, youll attend morning or afternoon sessions.

You will also need to attend two one-hour tutorials each week. Tutorial groups are much smaller, usually about five students; this way we can better ensure that you have understood the weeks learning and that you are ready for the next.

    Alternative Route

We know how difficult it is to get a full-time place in higher education, so we have thought of an alternative option for students in our region.

Full-time places at Coventry University College are limited, like elsewhere in higher education, so we want to offer students who dont secure a full-time place an alternative to having to go back to school or college. We call it our Alternative Route.

Our Alternative Route is aimed at students who want to study for a degree, are happy to live at home and want to gain some valuable work experience whilst they study. You may still be able to obtain a student loan

for the course fees but not for any maintenance support.

At Coventry University College you could complete a degree with us within four years and finish by Easter of the final year. This means that you could be finishing your course ahead of other graduates for that year and could get that all important step ahead of your peers.

This could be a sensible alternative to full-time study which leaves you with more disposable time to try and secure professional work placements that could help you gain the work experience that employers are increasingly expecting from their workforce.

    Whats the difference?

The only difference between our Alternative Route and a full-time course is the number of modules you can study in a year. With the full-time route you can study four modules per year but with the Alternative Route only three. This means that you can still get your degree but it takes a little longer up to four years instead of three.

This can give you a real advantage and although the total fees are the same as a full-time student, they are spread out over four years, so it is only 4,212* in 2015/16. Also, since you are only attending Coventry University College for 18 weeks per year, it gives you plenty of time to get work which can help fund your study and lifestyle.

    Access to Higher Education

We understand that busy adults may have commitments and it can be hard to work around these for example if you have children at school or a part-time job in the evening- so we run our Access to HE programmes during the day; Monday to Thursday 9.30-13.30.

The Access Course takes one year to complete running from September to May.

We hope that this will allow you to start your education journey once again and on successful completion you will then have the opportunity to choose how and when you study for your degree with us; day time, evenings or Saturdays.

  • Get qualifiedCoventry University College offers a range of academic awards. For many of our subjects you can choose the level at which you want to study. And the great thing about Coventry University College is that you can complete one course and then decide to study further for a higher award, helping to improve your employability.

  • Access to Higher Education (HE) Diplomas

Coventry University College is delivering OCN London Access to HE Diploma programmes. Our Access to HE Diploma courses are designed to provide the underpinning knowledge and skills needed to progress to a degree or diploma course in higher education.

These courses enable adults who do not have the necessary level 3 qualifications (such as A levels) required to enter higher education to acquire the Access to HE Diploma, which is equivalent in standard to these qualifications.

    Foundation Year

Our Foundation Year courses offer an introduction to your chosen subject and are an ideal route to higher level qualifications, helping you develop the necessary skills for further study. You can apply for a Foundation Year course if you have:

studied for level 3 qualifications, such as A levels or a BTEC National Diploma and Certificate qualifications, but may not have yet achieved the grades necessary to enter the university course of your choice.

studied for a level 3 qualification but have decided to change subject area.

A Foundation Year course will comprise four six-week learning blocks (120 credits).

    Higher National Certificate (HNC)

A Higher National Certificate is a well-established qualification at level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework. Many employers like their staff to have this qualification if they want them to operate at a technician level within their organisation.

At Coventry University College you will be required to study and pass four specified six-week learning blocks (120 credits) at level 4 in order to achieve the HNC. An HNC is year one of a degree course.

    Higher National Diploma (HND)

The Higher National Diploma can be studied from year 1 or you can join the course after completing an HNC. With an HND qualification you can expect to work as a higher technician in your company.

The HND is equivalent to 240 credits or eight specified six-week learning blocks:

four at level 4 four at level 5

An HND is year two of a degree course.

    Bachelors Degree with Honours

The Undergraduate Honours Degree is the widely recognised qualification offered by the UK university system. Once you have an honours degree you will be a graduate and have better prospects to be able to work at a professional level in an organisation.

The Honours Degree at Coventry University College is designed so that you can enter at first, second or third level according to your existing qualifications. It is made up of 360 credits:

    120 at level 4

    120 at level 5

    120 at level 6

Each level is usually taken and completed over one year.

    Professional qualifications

In addition to the academic qualification, many courses at Coventry University College can lead to professional qualifications. These are awards made by professional bodies after you have taken and passed the examinations, tests and professional practice requirements set by the relevant professional body.

Professional qualifications are designed to ensure that professional standards within a whole range of fields are maintained and, in most instances, youll be able to apply for membership of the professional body.

Where applicable our HNC, HND and Honours Degree courses have been designed around these standards and we have worked closely with the relevant professional bodies to achieve accreditation.

Securing a professional qualification could help set you apart from other candidates when youre applying for jobs, and it will show prospective employers that you are a committed individual, serious about what you do.

Please note that all examination fees and membership fees are in addition to your tuition fees.
