ThereweretwosimpleprinciplestotheCultureand Health Strand of the programme forCork 2005: European Capital of Culture.

Thefirstwastobringtheyeartothosewhocouldnotaccessitandthesecondwastodeviseaseriesofresidenciesandprojects thatwouldengagedeeplywiththecomplexsectorthatisourhealthservice. WebegandiscussionsinMay2003withawidegroup of people working in the Health Service.Proposals were submitted through the public callprocess and these demonstrated that we wouldneedacomprehensiveprogrammeinordertomakeanykindofimpactinsuchalarge,spreadoutandcomplex area. Projects would need to happen inhospitals,daycarecentres,healthservicecommunityprojects, services in theareasofdisability,mentalhealth,elderly,youngpeople,areasofdisadvantagewithinthecityandcountyandsoon. A Working Group was established betweentheHealthServiceExecutive(HSE)SouthernAreaandCork2005and,outof this,over30projects

weredevised.Theseincludedbringingtheexistingprogrammeouttohospitalsanddaycarecentres,adapted for the particular context or setting.Wealso staged specially commissioned concerts andeventsandweprovidedaccess to theprogrammehappeningintheatresandvenuesaroundthecitythrough ticket allocations. In this way we wereable to bring the Capital of Culture events topeopleandpeopletoevents. Alongside this we developed an ambitiousseries of residencies whereby artists workedalongside staff andusersof the services,devisingprojectsthatwerespecifictotheparticularserviceandtothepeopleinvolved.Theseresidenciesandprojects were designed to ensure a meaningfulparticipationinthecreationofculture.Someoftheprojects engagedwith particularly complex areasoftheserviceanditisatestamenttotheartiststhatsuchhighqualityworkwascreated.Theresidencieswerechallengingandtheinvolvementofthestaff,ofvolunteersandoftheusersoftheserviceoften

called for complex project management. Cork2005’s Ann O’Connor brought her specialisedskillsaswellashercommitmenttoensurethatalloftheprojectshappened. TheCultureandHealthStrandwouldnothavebeenpossiblewithoutthesupportandcommitmentof Health Service Executive staff, both on theWorking Group and those who assisted, helped,encouraged,suggestedand,aboveall,workedhardtomaketheStrandhappen.WewouldliketothankthecurrentMinisterforEnterpriseandEmploymentand formerMinister forHealth,MicheálMartinT.D.whosupportedtheStrandandmadefundingavailable so that it could happen. The legacy ofwhatwascreated,documented inthepublicationandDVD,will surelybe thedevelopmentof realand long lasting alliances between the creativecommunityand thosewhowork foranduseourhealthservices.

accompanying DVD which documents the widerangeofactivitiesundertakenaspartoftheCork2005CultureandHealthStrand. Our partnership with the Cork 2005organisation through the Culture and HealthStrandprogrammehasbeenanextremelyfruitfulcollaboration. It has provided opportunities forcreativeparticipationintheCork2005experiencefor people with whom we work - directly or incollaborationwith theNGO sector - in hospital,careandcommunitysettingsandacross thewiderangeofourprogrammeareas.The commitmentthroughout theyear toa socially inclusivemodelofworkwasasignificantandimportantelementoftheprogrammefortheHSE,aswastheinvolvementofstaffintheprocessacrossmanyoftheprojects. Theexpertiseandcontributionsofartists,staffandusersofourservicescoupledwiththeeffectivesynergies and respectful working relationshipsdevelopedwithintheindividualprojectscreatedapositiveenvironmentwhichallowedgoodquality

work to flourish. The year has also seen newrelationships between arts organisations, artistsandhealthcarestaffandsettingswhichaugurswellforfuturedevelopment. This publication and DVD, as well as theconference,willletussharetheexperiencesofthewiderangeofprojectsof theCultureandHealthStrand programme, explore issues vis-à-vis goodpracticeandcontextualise theroleofcultureandartsinitiativesinthewiderhealthagenda.Itwillalsogiveusabasistobuildontheyear’sworkandmoveforwardinaco-ordinatedandcreativewaytothebenefitofserviceusers,staff,artistsandartsorganisations. AspartoftheEuropeanCapitalofCultureProgramme, Cork 2005 joined forceswiththeHSESouthernAreatodevelopa

cultureandhealthdimensiontoitsactivities.Theprogrammewhich resultedbecameknownas theCork2005:CultureandHealthStrandandaimedtomakeculturaleventsandprojectsaccessibletopatients,healthcarestaffandvisitorsinhospitals,daycarecentres,residentialunitsandcommunityhealthcaresettingsintheCorkarea. The Culture and Health Strand comprisedof 32 projects which brought ceramics, music,dance, drama, video, photography, storytelling,visualandsoundarttoanestimated2,500clientsin 43 healthcare locations, who otherwise maynot have had the opportunity to participate inthisspecialyear. Thepurposeof thispublicationandDVD istocelebrateandrecordthewealthofvibrantandinnovative work that took place as part of theCultureandHealthStrandin2005.Yet,itisalsoenvisaged as a resource and networking tool forthosewhowish to develop theirwork in the fieldofartsandhealth.Eachoftheprojectswhichtookplacehasthepotentialtobeadaptedandtransferredto different healthcare and community settings.Equally,manyprojectscouldretainthestructuresandprocessestheyfindworkeffectivelyandintroduceanewartformorcombinationofartforms. The publication opens with an essay fromMikeWhite, Director of Arts andHealth in the

Centre for Arts and Health in Humanities andMedicine (CAHHM). Inhis essay,Mikegivesaninsight into the Cork 2005: Culture and HealthStrandandananalysisoftheworkundertakeninCorkwith reference to arts and healthcareworkinternationally.This is followedby aCase StudySection which documents the 32 projects thattookplacein2005.Thepublicationalsoincludesa Resource Section which we hope will provideausefulpointofreferenceforthosewhowishtoexploreordevelop theirwork in theareaofartsandhealthfurther. TheDVDoffers an overviewof theCultureandHealthStrandandinindividualsegmentsanin-depthlookattheMOMENT,encounters,MusicinHealthcare/MentalHealthprojectsandtheCultureinResidenceprogramme,which encompasses tenartistsresidenciesandnineteensmalleryetnolesssignificant events, workshops and performances.It is hoped that the publication and DVD willcontribute to the growing library of stimulatingartsandhealthmaterialnowavailableinIreland. Imade twobrief visits toCork in the autumnof 2005 to try and absorb the impact ofthe Culture and Health Strand within the

varied facets of Cork’s health and social careinfrastructure. In just those fewdays Iwas ableto sample the dress rehearsal for a multi-mediaperformancework in a sheltered housing unit, apuppet showby residents of a long-stay hospitalandlocalstudents,aninternationalpoetryreadingonhospitalradio,aspeciallycommissionedplayinanelderlypersons’carehome,adisplayoffabricartbychildrenwithdyspraxia,treedressinginthegroundsofahospitalchapel,andafolkconcertina

mentalhealthunit.Ialsotookinsomemainstreamfestivalevents thathad lateralconnections to theexplorationofhealththemes,suchasthe ‘Home’exhibitionat theCrawfordGallery. AndoutsidetheOperaHouseIwitnessedthecatharticextremesport of fifty teenagers head-banging their waythroughBeethoven’sOde To Joy. In between these events I gave talks onthe practice and research of arts in health tomixed audiences of arts, health and social careprofessionals.Thisdidfeel;however,likebringingcoals to Newcastle, or rather from NewcastlewhereIhappentolive.Becausecultureandhealthhasbeensuchanintegralpartof theCork2005:European Capital of Culture programme, Corkis now as ahead of the game on arts in healthpractice as anywhere else I can think of. It is aprivilegetohavebeenaskedtoreflectonwhathashappenedhereandtoprovidesomewordsforthispublication. My title for this essay derives from a poemby a participant (now training to become amusic facilitator) in the Music in Healthcare/MentalHealthprojectatSt.Stephen’sHospitalinGlanmire. The line “Changing of seats from farto near” seems to sum up both the context andachievementof theCultureandHealthStrand intheCork2005programme.Itspeaksofinclusion,confluence,empowermentandanengagementwiththe arts that is personalised through the creationofacongenialspaceforitsenjoyment.Butastheauthor writes, “that is not all that is happeninghere” – the outcomes have been aswide-rangingastheprogrammeitself.TheCultureandHealth

Strandhasbeenanambitiousinitiativecomprisingofthreekeyprojects,tenartistresidenciesandovertwentysmaller,yetnolesssignificant,performances,workshopsandevents. Despitetheexponentialgrowthinternationallyin arts in health practice in recent years, Corkhasdone something thatnowhere elsehas so farattempted–toarticulatetherelationshipbetweenartsandhealthservices throughoutacityand itsenvironsandtobuildthepotentialandvitalityofsuch a relationship on the involvement of thosewhomightotherwisebemarginalisedduetotheirhealth status.Thebrightest legacy that aCapitalof Culture designation can offer is a renewedconfidenceandcohesion,notablenotjustincentresofculturalexcellencebutalsoincentresofnecessity– in hospitals, care homes and in social servicessettings,bothformalandinformal.TheCork2005officealsodidarelativelysimplethingthatmustbeacknowledged–itconsistentlyfacilitatedaccesstoitsmainstreameventsprogrammeforpeopledependentoncare.Otherfestivalscouldlearnfromthis. Worldwidethereisadevelopingorientationofcommunity arts, cultural education and outreachservicestoaddresshealthissues.TheinternationalconferenceonartsandhealthheldinDublinbytheArtsCouncilinJune2004tookstockofwhatwashappeninginIrelandandelsewhereandsetoutanagendaforitsfuturedevelopment.InalliancewiththeHealthServiceExecutive(HSE)SouthernArea,Cork2005hasadvancedthatagendaandshowntherelevanceoflocalartsdevelopmenttocurrenthealthpolicy. TheCultureandHealthStrandhasprovided

a clear example of how the arts can engagein the partnership approach advocated in theGovernment’sQualityandFairnessHealthStrategy(2002).Thatreport’sforewordwrittenbythethenHealth Minister Micheál Martin, T.D. for CorkSouth,stressedtheimportanceofaddressinghealthinequalities caused by poverty and disadvantageandnotedthat“thestrategyatallpointsenvisagescross-disciplinary collaboration to achieve newstandards, protocols and methods.” The reportelaborated on this later in declaring that “manyotherfactors,andthereforemanyotherindividuals,groups, institutionsandpublicandprivate sectorbodieshaveaparttoplayintheefforttoimprovehealthstatusandachievethehealthpotentialofthenation.”TheStrategyacknowledgedthatculturalconditions can impacton the socialdeterminantsofhealthandrecognisedthe“formalandinformalrolesof familyandcommunity in improvingandsustainingwell-beinginsociety”.Itconcludedthat“the quality of life aspect of health needs to behighlighted.Thiswillinvolvecreatingasupportiveenvironment to maximise social well-being forvulnerablegroups”.

Usingtheartstohelpdevelopthat‘supportiveenvironment’ in the context of a city and regionis a considerable challenge, and ithas requiredadiversity of work in both healthcare and socialsettings. Someof thecultureandhealthprojectsin2005have focusedon the intrinsic therapeuticbenefits of the arts, some on environmentalimprovementstosupporthealthstaffindeliveringtheir care services, and others have looked atproducingmore creative approaches to achievingpatient-centred care. In addition, there has beencommunity-based arts in health work tacklingissuesofsocialexclusionandfocusingonaconceptofsocialcapitalwhere‘unityishealth’.Thesearearts projects that start from the point of usingcreativitytoenhancesocialrelationships,reflectinggrowing evidence that good relationships are amajordeterminantofhealth. ForCork2005’sCultureandHealthProjectManagerAnnO’Connor “the year has been oneof nurtured and informed experimentation”, butonlynowperhapsisitpossibletoreflectonwhathas really been achieved. There is recognitionthat the programme has been a learning process

forall involved.Asamemberof theCork2005/HSEWorkingGroup for the Strand commented,“thestrengthofthisprogrammeis thattherehasbeenahugerespectforthecompetenciesandskillsandpeculiaritiesofallourfields.”Suchasharingof perspectives has infused the co-ordination aswell as the actual delivery of the projects. It hasestablishedaconfidentbase forcross-disciplinaryresearch,coupledwithpatientinvolvement,thatIbelieveshouldbethewayforwardintheevaluationofartsinhealth. Firstly and rightly, the Culture and HealthStrand placed patients and HSE clients at the

centreofthework,andthroughtheirparticipationin creative activities sought to celebrate theirrelationships with staff, carers and the widerpublic.Thiswasaboldmove,foroftenwithartsinhealththesaferrecourseissimplytocommissionartworksandperformancesforhealthcaresettings.A combination of both approaches, signals amomentumhasbeengenerated inall involved tocontinuethisworkwellbeyond2005. The appropriately titled ‘Encounters’ projectis a unique partnership developed between twoorganisations from the arts and health sectors.Triskel Arts Centre and St. Finbarr’s Hospital.

This partnership gave the Project Co-ordinator,Charlotte Donovan the opportunity to evolve acalendar of quality artist residencies,workshops,installations and events throughout 2005. Earlyin the year Charlotte took the time to developrelationshipswithstaffandpatientsasaprecursortoanyartactivity,sothatattentioncouldbegivennotjusttotheartworkitselfbuttohowitenhancesthedailylifeofthehospital.“Ididn’tapproachthisasmyresidency”,shesays,“butassomethingwewanttohappen”. Anarts-ledOpenDayonthefeastofSt.Finbarrin September gave thousands the opportunity toexperiencethehospitalnotasanarrayofclinicalandrehabilitativeunitsbutasalivingcommunity.Italsooverturnedthehospital’sdesignlimitationsin identifying indoor and outdoor spaces thatcould provide a patient-centred environment forboth personal and communal contemplation andenjoyment. It relieved the sadness thatmany feltabouttheplace,partlydueperhapstoitsworkhouseorigins,and insteadaffirmed thebestqualitiesofan old-style, community-based hospital. But it isnotonlytheimageofthehospitalthatisimproved.

AstheHeadofNursingobserves,“thisartworkishealthpromoting,andit’skeepingthepatientsalive.Itisprovidingavitalitythatisascrucialtohealthas treatment.” The hospital has secured funds tocontinuetheprogrammein2006,andtoextendtheproject’sactivitiesoutofthehospitalintothecity. Sustainability of course cannot be builton enthusiasm alone; it also requires reflectiveassessment of the impact of arts interventionsin health and indicators of their benefits. MusicNetwork’s evaluation of its project Music inHealthcare/Mental Health was crucial to its aimto establish a model of good practice for musicin mental healthcare settings. This project wasbasedinSt.Stephen’sHospital,GlanmireandtheCarrigmore Centre, Shanakiel. The combinationof direct observation, reflective practice by themusicians,andtestimonygatheredfromstaffandpatients at St. Stephen’s andCarrigmore, suggestthatkeybenefitsoftheparticipatorymusicsessionswereafosteringofempathyandself-esteemamongparticipants,andrestoring“asenseofindividualitythatisoftenlostordamagedwhenapersonsuffersfrom mental illness”. contemporaryartpracticeandperson-centredcare.Thismulti-mediaprojectwithresidentsandstaffatO’ConnellCourtshelteredhousingunitproducedwhat itsArtisticDirectorMollySturgesdescribesas“anengagedensemble”.Overthreemonthsthecarefully nurtured relationships between artistsand participants developed organically into aperformance piece that is part-reminiscence, part‘live’art.Asonestaffmemberobserves,“itcamealive, grewout of abstract things…and createda kind of family”. It drew the incidental detailsof participants’ everyday lives and recollectionsinto a creative exchange with artists working indifferent media to produce a shared experience

that celebrated and astonished. The radiance oftheperformersmadeclear thewholeprocesshadbeengreatfun.‘MOMENT’hadanartisticrigourthat at first may have mystified the participantsbut intheendprovedrevelatory.Asonemembercommented, “you want more of it – you don’twantittostop”.Itchallengedandbrieflychangedingrained patterns of care management andmundanity,leadingonecaremanagertodeclare“itelevatedmindstothingsotherthansurvivalhere”.Therewerealsoidentifiedhealthbenefitsforsomeparticipants, such as less frequent visits to thedoctor,lessmedicationrequired,andmoreregularsleeppatterns.

a frequently cited benefit of arts participationgenerally,and it isaprimedeterminantofhealthasepidemiologistSirMichaelMarmot,theleadingauthority on the impact of status on health, hasobserved: All societies have rankings because individuals are unequal in a variety of ways; but not all societies have the same gradients in health. What matters is the degree to which inequalities in ranking lead to inequalities in capabilities … the lower in the hierarchy you are the less likely it is that you will have full control over life and opportunities for full social participation. Autonomy and full social participation are so important for health that their lack leads to deterioration in health. Cultural involvement can help mitigate theadverseeffectsofexclusionandlowstatus.Arecentstudy commissioned by the UK’s Mental HealthFoundation showed thatpeoplewhoexperiencedmoderate to severe mental health problemsidentifiedtheabilitytomaketheirownchoicesandtakecontrolasamajorfactorinthemaintenanceofmentalhealth.ThemodelthatMusicNetworkdeveloped inCorkallowspatients toaccess theirown innate musical skills and exercise artisticchoicewithinacontextofcollectivecreativity.Tohelpidentifysuchimpactsfromtheperspectiveofbothclientsandstaff,MusicNetwork’sresearcherhas concluded that a participatory approach toevaluation with clarity of aims and objectives iscrucial. The challenge for future research into aprojectlikethisiswhetherthatfirststeptochoicecanleadtogreaterautonomyandrestoredhealthofmind.

Forresearchtobemeaningful;however,theremust be continuity of the activity to assess itsimpactovertime.TheCultureandHealthStrandhasused its keyprojects as framesonwhich thehealth services canweave connectionswithotherartsgroups,bothprofessionalandamateur.WhenI visited theCarrigmoreCentre inDecember theCorkSingersClub’s session in thedayroomwasconcludingwitharousingFairytale of New Yorkwithstaffandpatientsinfinevoice.Suchcelebrationisactuallyheirtoamucholdercustom. In the late nineteenth century Cork Asylumboasted a 20-strong band led by a professionalbandmaster.Alocalnewspaperreportfrom1876ontheband’sChristmasconcertnotedthat:“Theballroomisaspaciousandloftyapartment,andhasrecently beenpainted anddecoratedwith artisticskillbytheinmates.Asplendidbandisdirectedbyanefficientbandmaster.Dancing,singingandotheramusements are indulged in, and this treatmenthasfromlongexperienceprovedmoreeffectualinrestoringthesensesthanthemoresternprocedureof close confinement.” So arts in health is bynomeans a new venture for Cork. There aremanysimilar examples tooof health institutions in theUKandUSthathavealonghistoryofengagementwith the arts. The difference nowadays is that,whereastheyoncesimplymadegoodsense,publicspendingpressuresandaccountabilitynowrequirethat they prove their validity to the arts fundingsystemandclinicalgovernance. ‘MOMENT’ was perhaps the best-realisedexample of a participatory arts in health projectasserting its quality and relevance to both

At the moment, ‘MOMENT’ may only liveon through its dissemination and the individualbenefits itmayhave left residentsandstaff inO’ConnellCourt.Ideally,itcouldhavetouredtoothercarehomes in thedistrictbuildingtheconfidenceofitsensemblecasttocontinuebeyondaone-offproject.Butintheprocessofmaking‘MOMENT’it was difficult to predict its outcome. Becausecommunity-basedartsinhealthprojectsoftenarecharacterised by ‘informed experimentation’ it iscommon for them to only realise their potentialandtheresearchagendathatcouldinformthematthecloseofthework.Thisfurtherarguesaneedfortheirsustainabilitysothattheyarenotdiversionaryentertainments but pathways to improved health

andsocialintegrationthatcanmeettheneedsandraisedexpectationsofparticipants. But theenergyandresources thathavegoneintoCork2005’sCultureandHealthStrandhavedeliveredapaletteofpossibilitiesthatgoesbeyondthealbeitvastconfinesofayear-longinternationalfestival.Thedeepimmersionofartsintohealthcaresettingshassparkedacross-sectordialoguethatisessentialforcontinuationofthework,sothefinaleconferenceinFebruary2006isactuallyaprologue.In taking stockofwhathasbeenachieved in theyear, it seemsevident that thekeyprojects,artistresidencies programme and the twenty or sosmaller initiativeswhich tookplacehave laid thegroundworkforavibrantnetworkofartsinhealth

activity around the city. The sheer diversity ofpracticeandcontextintheseprojectshasbroughtarts in health practice into alignment with artsfor older people, disability arts, arts for specialneedsgroups,andartsineducation.Havingtheseconnections at grassroots level should place theartsinastrongpositiontoaddresspolicymakinginitiativesatGovernmentlevel. Severaloftheartistresidencieshadanintegraltrainingelement,whichsoughttobuildconnectionsbetween artists, health workers and communityrepresentatives, thereby redefining the ‘arts inhealthpractitioner’asnotbeingjusttheartistbutratheranetworkofpeoplekeentoexploreahealthissuecreatively.Afocusonresourcedevelopmentunderpinnedthedeliveryoftheartsactivityitself. Dance Facilitator, Jo Nichols’s ‘A Time ToDance’project,forexample,tookplaceinanumberof settingswhere elderlypeople receivehealthorsocial service support. The project involved ateamofdancetutorswhowereinmostcasesalsohealthcare staff and community workers. As theprojectdevelopedtheteamevaluatedandanalyseditswork.Anotable observationwas the surpriseofmanyhealthcarestaffat theagility,enjoymentand concentration of older people once they gotinvolved. At the end of the project the lessonslearnedandtheguidelinesforgoodpracticewhichwere developed were fed back to a wider peergroupof27dancetutors.Theprojectalerteddanceresourcesand care services in the region towhatcanbeofferedtoelderlyresidents–anditachievedthisonamodestbudget. Similarly the ‘Cobh Regeneration’ project,

facilitated by Sirius Arts Centre, trained awomen’sgroup to facilitatevisualartswork inaday care centre. It established clear health aimswithin the district’s regeneration agenda. TheleadartistMarieBretthelpeddevelopskillsinthefacilitators in project management and reflectivepractice,providingthemwithastronggroundingin community-basedarts inhealth.Theartworksemergednaturallyoutofthelearningrelationshipforged between the apprentice artists, day centrestaffandolderpeople.ThefivecollagecanvassesthatwereproducedmapthejourneyoftheprojectandembodytherevitalisationoftheCobhdistrictthrough the eyes and handiwork of its seniorresidents. ‘CobhRegeneration’appearstohavebeenanexemplary project and its documentation couldprovide a useful template for future activity. Itcreated a domestic familiarity around the artmaking.My experienceof arts in healthprojectselsewhere has taught me that this is the magicingredient of good practice in this field. As adaughterofoneoftheCobhparticipant’scomments,“ithasgivenmyMamdignity.Icanfeeltheheartintheworks.”Dignitymaybeanimportanttriggerto sustaining health. Even an ephemeral experience of creativeengagement,whenittouchesonthepersonal,canhavearesoundingimpact.WhatmostimpressedastaffworkeronthepuppetryprojectinSt.Raphael’sCentreinYoughal,forexample,was“thegentleness

ofit”.Thisproject,‘MOMENT’andothersintheprogrammebuilt inter-generational linksbetweencare institutions and local schools, providing amutuallearningexperiencethatfosteredapositiveregard between the young and the vulnerable.Dignity conferred through communal attainmentintheartshasbeenapalpablesocialoutcome. TheCultureandHealthStrandmeritscriticalreflection by all who have been involved in itbecauseithasbroughtintotheopenpatientsandclients’viewsonservicesprovidedtothemandtheverymeaning of health, and indeed themeaningof culture. The projects themselves have helpeddemocratise this process, the development of aForumTheatreprojectwithpeoplewithdisabilities

called‘FindingAVoice’isanexample.Thisproject,which is based in St. Laurence’sCheshireHome,enabled and facilitated the residents to articulatehealthandsocialcareissuesthatmatteredtothem.ForumTheatrecouldalsobeseenasametaphor

for thecross-sectorcollaboration thathas fuelledtheCultureandHealthStrand.InForumTheatreyouparticipate not only as an audiencemember,butalsoasanactorordirector,asyoubringyourunique level of expertise to bear on the issuesidentifiedbythegroup. WhatIthinkhasworkedbestintheCultureandHealthStrand is that ithasnot required thearts to demonstrate their worth to healthcare ateveryturn;ratherithasexaminedthevalueoftherelationshipsbuiltupthroughartsactivitybetweenstaffandthepublic.Ithassignpostedthebenefitsrather than the instruments, and so allowed thequalityoftheartproducedtospeakforitself. ThecreationofapositionofArtsandHealth

Co-Ordinatorfortheremainderof2006bytheHSESouthernAreaisanindicatorthatthereisconfidencewithinthesystemtodrivethisworkforward.Thereisalsorecognitionthatthewholeisgreaterthanthesumofparts.AsamemberoftheCork2005/HSEWorkingGroupcommentedtome,“wehavetobecareful that a conference does not just become areflectionontheprojects,andthatitisareflectiononthestructuresandprocessaswell”. Wearebeginningtoseethatsuccessfulartsinhealthprojectsattempttoestablishacontinuumofsupportforpeoplewithhealthproblemstoimproveboth theirwell-beingandcreative skills.Muchofthe practice and learning going on in this fieldcanusefullycontributetowiderhealthpromotion

strategies and the development of participatoryartswiththegeneralpublic.Theyneednotbeseensimplyasspecialistservicesforexcludedminorities,but rather as core applications of the arts toencourageahealthycultureinahealthiernation.

descrIPtIOnBetweenspring2000andDecember2004,MusicNetworkand theMidlandHealthBoardworkedtogetherinpartnershiptoresearchhowtoprovidemeaningful access to music for older people inresidential andday care settings.Buildingon theexperienceoftheMidlandsproject,MusicNetworkreceived funding through theCork2005Cultureand Health Strand to develop a new project,focusing on clients and care staff in twomentalhealthfacilitiesinCork. Structured in twoseven-weekmodules -oneinspring/summer2005andoneinautumn2005–professionalmusicians,AingealaDeBúrca(violin)and Nico Brown (multi-instrumentalist) workedwith groups of clients and staff in St. Stephen’sHospital, Glanmire and Carrigmore Centre,Shanakiel. Theweeklyworkshops (a totalof14percentre)involvedagroupofupto20peopleineachcentre. Thefocusoftheworkshopswasonenablingthegroupmemberstoworktogethercreatively,tocomposeandperformtheirownmusicalongsidetheprofessionals,usinganapproachwhichcombined

rhythmic, melodic and harmonic work, usingsingingandvoice-workcombinedwithpercussioninstrumentsprovidedbytheIRMATrust. Although participants needed no priormusical training, many members of staff andclients displayed a high level of musical talent,someofwhomalreadyplayedarangeofmusicalinstruments, which they brought along to theworkshops.This,combinedwiththeskillsoftheprofessionalmusicians,enhancedthequalityofthegroup’smusicaloutput. The length of the workshops differed ineachcentreaccordingtotheneeds,concentrationand energy levels of the clients. In Carrigmore,workshopslastedapproximatelyanhourwhileinSt.Stephen’sHospitaltheylastedforapproximatelyanhourandahalf. Staff trainingsessionswere factored into theproject framework, which aimed to encouragemembersofstafftocontinuetheworkbetweenthemusicians’ visits and to extend thework beyondthetimeframeoftheproject.

When you are living in residential care you can become so removed from parts of yourself that are still alive on the inside: these sessions are like life being brought into these centres.

aIMs and OBjectIVesOverall,theaimoftheMusicinHealthcareprojectwastodevelopamodelofgoodpracticeforusingmusic in mental health settings, which wouldimpactfavourablyonthehealthcareenvironment,primarily through enhancing quality of life andpromotinghealthandsocialgain. Ontheground,theobjectivesweretodeliveran enjoyable, creative experienceof collaborativemusic to clients and to transfer musicalunderstanding and skills to members of staff sotheycouldfacilitatemusicalactivityintheperiodsbetweenmusicians’visitsandaftertheprogrammeended. In each centre, these objectives wereaddressedbyspecific strategies that tookaccount

ofindividualneeds,interestsandresources.

OutcOMesStaffwithinthetwoparticipatingcentresobservedthat theworkshops had overwhelmingly positiveimpacts on the client group. They noticed thatthe clients greatly enjoyed the workshops; thatit encouraged social interaction between clientsthemselves and between clients and staff; thatit improved clients’ ability to concentrate; itimprovedself-esteemanditencouragedintegrationbybringingintothecentresprofessionalmusiciansfromelsewhere. This project tapped a huge appetite forparticipativemusicandartsprojectsinmentalhealthsettingsamongbothstaffandclientsandindicatedthat such projects can have incredibly positiveimpactswithinthisparticularhealthcarefield.Localpartnersarenowhopingtoextendtheworkandareseekingfundingandresourcestothisend.

Starting in July 2005, O’Connell Courtresidentsworked two to three timesaweekoverthreemonths.WorkshopsalsotookplaceinTurnersCrossandShareDayCareCentresthroughwhichtheolderpeopletherewereinvitedtobepartofthemainactivityatO’ConnellCourt.Theparticipantsworked in one-on-one creative sessions and ingroupswiththeartistsandstudents,indevelopingcreative expressions that then formed elementsof the final ‘tea-party’ performances. Thosewhochose not to perform live used video and soundrecordingstocontributetotheperformances.

Inadditiontothetwoperformances,anOpenDiscussiondesigned to letmembersof thepublicmeet theartists, studentsandparticipantsand todiscusstheintersectionofart-makingandhealthcare,artist collaborations and intergenerational work,tookplaceattheendofAugust.ThiswasfollowedinSeptemberbyanOpenWorkshopwhichinvitedthepublic tomakeacreative contribution to the‘MOMENT’TeaPartyperformances. The project was highly successful and allparticipants wished the project could continue.Including the performances, the project likelyaffected over 200 people positively. Additionally,manypeople fromO’ConnellCourtwhodidnotparticipate in ‘MOMENT’ expressed interest inparticipationoncetheysawtheperformances.

Thiscollaborationbetweenanartscentre[Triskel]and a hospital [St. Finbarr’s] was a uniqueinitiative. The programme ran for the wholeyearandaimed to encompassawidevarietyofapproachesandartforms. StFinbarr’sHospitalisahugesiteencompassingmanydifferentareasofpatientcare.Aswellaslong-term care wards for elderly, physically disabled,psychiatric patients and rehabilitationwards, thesitehostsamultitudeofoutpatient clinics, socialservices, Blood Transfusion Service, a maternityunit and college of midwifery. The hospital hasgreathistoricalandsocial significance in thecity,housedasitisintheformerworkhouse. TheArtist-in-Residence,CharlotteDonovan,hasextensiveexperience indirectingartsprojectsin hospitals. Besides developing projects herself,Charlotte worked with local and internationalartists and arts organisations to develop andpresentworkthroughouttheyear. In developing the programme Charlottespent considerable time consultingwithpotential

participantstoensurethateachofthedepartmentsonthesitefeltactivelyengaged.Manyoftheartprojectswereadirectresultofthisconsultation. One of the main focuses was continuedvisual art workshops with long-term patients.This enabled patients to discover and developtheirowncreativity. A number of open-access, day long, drop-inworkshopstookplaceintheSocialCentreenablingpeople from all backgrounds to work togetherlearningnewcreativeskills.Theresultsformedpartofagrowingexhibition,whichwasshowninseveralvenuesinthehospitalandinTriskelduringtheyear. The artist also developed several specificprojectswithwards and departments that led tothe creationof artworkswhich are permanentlyinstalledinthedayroomsandcorridors. Aseriesofprojectsandresidenciesinvolved13artists.TheseincludedCorksculptorandfilmmakerMargaretFitzgibbonwhospentsixweeksworkingwithfemalepatients. ScottishartistKirstyStansfieldinvolvedelderly

The resulting banners decorate thecorridoroftheUnit. The formerMagdalene Laundry on the sitehosted two residencies. Art Trail ‘Soundworks’presented Swiss performance artist Charlotte HugwhileDublin-basedartistsPatriciaHurlandTherryRudin spent timeworkingwith staff, patients andstudentsinthecreationofasite-specificinstallation. Several performances took place. Theseranged from free lunchtime screenings ofWorldCinema to opera singers. Student placementsincludedthedevelopmentofamusicprojectandproductionofaCD. A giant mural was also painted, utterlytransformingadullcourtyard.

aIMs and OBjectIVesEncounterswasapartnershipbetweenTriskelandSt Finbarr’s Hospital that aimed to ensure thatpatients,staffandvisitorsofStFinbarr’swouldbeactiveparticipantsintheculturallifeoftheircity.Inadditionitaimedtodemonstratethataccesstoandparticipationintheartsnotonlyenrichesthequalityoflifeforpeopleinhospital,butalsocanactuallyimprovehealthandwellbeingandself-esteem.

OutcOMesManyoftheprojectswerecelebratedandexhibitedduring the feast of St. Finbarr’s. Held on the 25September,thisgiantopendayattractedover2,500members of the public. Several art projects andinstallationswerecreatedforthedayandthegroundsof the hospital were transformed with a farmersmarket,craftstallsandamarqueewithmusicalanddramaticentertainmentandartactivities. Other outputs included the many artworksproducedand exhibitedboth in thehospital and inTriskelduringtheyear,asite-specificsoundinstallationattheformerMagdaleneLaundryonthehospitalsite,theproductionofamusicCDandthetransformationofadullcourtyardwithagiantmural. The project was a tremendous success,due mainly to the incredible generosity of themanagement, staff, patients and visitors of St.Finbarr’s.Theyembracedtheartistandtheprojects,lendingsupport,encouragementandparticipation.The project has had a very positive impact onresidentswhomighthaveotherwisemissedoutoncultural events and activities during Cork 2005.Participants are brighter, feel positive and havesomethingtolookforwardto,withmanyobviouslyhappierandhealthiersincetheintroductionofthehospital’sartsprojects. In November the project received a visitfrom President MaryMcAleese, gaining valuablerecognitionoftheeffortsofallthoseinvolved. The Health Service Executive has pledgedcommitment to continuing the relationship withTriskelandbothlookforwardtonewandexcitingprojectsandcollaborationsinthefuture.

Sixweekswerethenspentworkingwith,onaverage, 24older people attending theDayCarecentre on Wednesday mornings. An average ofthree members of centre staff were present andsupportiveduringthesesessions. Visualmediawasusedtoexploreathemeofhealth and revitalisation/regeneration. The group

exploredperceptionssurroundingtheirhometownofCobhandassociated ideasaboutrevitalisationand regeneration.A series of five large canvases,paintedandcollaged,werecreatedbyparticipantsworkinginfourkeygroups.Onetraineefacilitatorfrom the Cobh Women’s Art Group workedconsecutivelywitheachsmallgroup.

aIMs and OBjectIVesIn linewithoneofSiriusArtsCentre’sobjectivestocelebrateCobhthroughart,thisprojectmarkedthe beginning of what the Centre hopes will bea longer-term community arts initiative whichwill celebrate the area. Using the theme of TheRegeneration of Cobh/Health and Revitalisation,theprojectaimedtocollaborativelydevelopabodyofworkforexhibition. Building on work previously undertaken bySiriusArtsCentrewithawomen’sartgroup, theprojectaimedtodeveloptheirskillsandfacilitatethetrainingnecessaryforthemtodeliveravisualarts project in a healthcare setting. Two sessions were spent reviewing andevaluatingtheprojectandadiary-likeprojectfilewasassembled. The artist remembers an ambiance of ‘funand laughter’ amidst the ‘serious intent’ as theguestsdevelopedtheircreations.Artfoundfurtherresonance as the guests discovered areas of eachother’s lives thathadbeenunknown,openingupnewavenuesofconversationandinterests.

Dee Hurley designed a series of five two-hourworkshops to empower young people with theskills and confidence to train in an artform theycouldrelatetoandtoget involvedintheSurfaceTension urban art event, where they would beexposedtoestablishedgraffitiwritersfromalloverIrelandandtheworld. Thefirstweek,togainasenseofappreciation,the participants (Emmet, Stumpy, Chuck, GG,Merc andAlan) looked at graffiti art on a localand worldwide context - visiting the graffitiwalls in Cork and looking at books. The nexttwo workshops were devoted to sketch work,developing tag signatures and exploring differentgraffiti writing styles. The final two workshopsconcentratedonspraycantechnique. Workshops took place in Meitheal Mara,facilitatedbylocalgraffitiartistTimMurphy.Thespacewasidealastherewasaroomwithalarge

table for drawing and outdoor space for aerosolwork. The Surface Tension urban art festivaltook place inWhite Street Car Park inCork on28 and 29May. Prior to the festival the youngpeopleexhibitedtheirworkduringanOpenDayatLibertyStreetHouse.

aIMs and OBjectIVesBased on a similar project in Australia which,when reviewed after five years noted that someparticipants had been getting work designingand painting commercially, Surface Tension wasdevisedasanopportunitytogiveagroupofyoungpeoplefromCorkachancetodevelopideas,learnskillsandexpressthemselvesinawaythatintereststhem;andthroughguidanceandpractise,toacquirean understanding and respect for themediumofaerosolpaint.

descrIPtIOnThisproject,whichtookplacemainlyduringathree-monthperiod in theautumnwasa collaborationbetweenCork2005,theMahonFamilyResourceCentre(MFRC)andLoriganCeramics.MFRCwasin theprocessof realising anoutdoorplay spaceforchildrentoadjointheexisting.ThetwoartistsworkingwithMFRCwereEmerToomeyandHughLorigan. The project involved three different groupsworkingonmakingceramicpiecesandplaquesforpossibleinclusioninthisoutdoorplayspace.Thegroupdiscussedtheconceptsofandworkedonthethemesof1.LightandSound,2.SandandWater,and3.Home.All the clayworkwasmade fromstonewarefiredto1280degreescentigrade. The groups, whose age profile ranged frompre-teenstograndparents,includedsettledtravellerchildren,womenwithchildrenofschool-goingageandsomeofthecommunityrepresentativesactiveinthearea.Theworkproducedreflectsthisdisparity.ThegroupsmetonedayaweekbetweentheendofSeptemberandthestartofDecember2005.

aIMs and OBjectIVesTheprojectsoughttobuildontheexistingplansto devise a unique play area at theMFRC.Thearea is intended to encourage children to usetheir imaginationandtoprovideasensoryspacein which they can play. The project respondedby exploring the possibilities of creating uniqueceramicpanels,3-dimensionalpiecesandplaquesforlocationinthearea.

OutcOMesA significant volumeofworkwasproducedas aresult of the workshops. All of the participantsdonated the ceramic panels, plaques and 3-dimensional pieceswhich theymade for thenewplay area at the MFRC. When the area is nearcompletion,theartistintendstoadviseMFRConhowthepiecesshouldbefitted. The workshops facilitated great interactionbetweentheparticipatinggroups.Theparticipantslearnedthedifficulttechniqueofworkingwithclayandthekilnfacilitiesbasedinthecentrewereputtouseforthefirsttime.

Dannyrecordedvarioussoundsfromaroundthecentre,onLongCanetrainingwalksaroundthecityandsuburbswithinstructorsandclientsofthecentreandonwalkswiththedoginstructorsand‘pupils’.RecordingswerealsomadebyputtingthebinauralmicrophonesonguidedogMurphyduringatrainingwalkandofthedogsinthekennels-atplay, eating, resting,washing, panting –with theinputandassistanceof theorganisation’s staff atalltimes.

aIMs and OBjectIVesInitiatedbyanapproachbyCork2005tosoundartist Danny McCarthy and further to meetingswiththeIrishGuideDogsfortheBlind,theartistproposed towork as an artist-in-residence in theorganisation’s headquarters for November andDecember2005andtocreateasoundinstallationfromtheresidency.

OutcOMesThefinalinstallationtooktheformofadarkenedroom in which ten speakers were installed andtwo audio systems: one playing a CD consistingof the names of the dogs and a colour readingmachinewhilsttheotherCDcontained20ofthetracksmadefromprocessingandeditingthefieldrecordings.These twoCDswere thensetplayingonrandom,sothesoundwouldneverbethesameatanyonetimeintheinstallation. Reactions to the project were extremelypositive.Both staff and clientswere interested intheworkatall timesandwerepreparedtogotoany trouble to assist.The artist hopes to presenttheinstallationinagalleryinthefuture,aswellasconsideringreleasingaCDofthework.

descrIPtIOn‘Older People for Beginners’ was a theatreperformance for older people conceived bydirector TomCreed andwriter/performerCiaránFitzpatrick. The performances took place in: St. Luke’sHome,Mahon;Turner’sCrossDayCareCentre;Westgate Foundation, Ballincollig; Share, Shear’sStreet;BishopstownSeniorSocialCentre;andtheCork2005CultureandHealthConferenceattheClarionHotel. As part of the creation of the performance,Creed and Fitzpatrick visited a number of theperformance venues and met with some of thestaffandresidentsinordertofindoutwhatmightinterestolderpeople. The performance explored young people’sperceptionsofolderpeople in a light-heartedyetprovocative fashion. The two actors arrived atthe day care centre or residential care centre todo a short performance for an audience of olderpeople.Theperformancerecountedtheirattemptsto discover what one could or shouldn’t do foran audience of older people and outlined theincreasinglyludicrousresearchtheyundertookto

tryandovercomeyoungpeople’signoranceaboutolderpeople.Aftertheperformance,theperformersinteracted informally with the audience, chattingwith themabout theperformanceand issues thathadbeenbroughtup.

The Cork Singer’s Club visited a variety ofhealthcaresettingsinCorktoentertaintheclientsand encourage them to become actively involvedintheperformance.Themainfocusoftheactivitywasonmusicandsong.Inall,ninevisitstookplaceduring the period of the project. The number ofClubmemberspresentonanyparticularoccasionvariedfromasfewasfourtoasmanyaseleven. The singers who participated in the projectfounditarewardingexperienceandhaveexpressedastrongdesiretocontinuesuchvisitsinthefuture.Thesingersreportedthatitspecificallycontributedtotheirpersonaldevelopmentandthattheyvaluedtheinteractionwiththeclientsinthecentres,eventhough such interaction varied depending on the

setting.Staffateachcentrewereveryappreciativeofthevisitsandprovidedawelcomeenvironmentfor the singers.Theclients enjoyed thevisitsandoftenbecameactivelyinvolvedintheperformance,which they otherwise would not have had theopportunitytoenjoy.

Photographs includedimages from current affairs, the arts, sports andother significant events in Cork community life.The photographs were divided into ten separateanduniqueexhibitions,whichrotatedfromvenuetovenueonceamonth.EachexhibitioncontainedtenframedphotographsandoneframedfrontpagefromtheEvening Echoarchive. The exhibition provided a stimulatingexperience for clients to reminisce on importantmoments and news stories of Cork’s history. In2006 the exhibition became the property of theHeathServiceExecutiveSouthernArea.

TheNorthsideFolkloreProjectwasaCorkCampusRadio project in the main programme of Cork2005whichbroughteverydaylifeandexperiencestotheforeinits‘CulturesofCork’radioproject.The project asked what the city means to thosewhopassthroughitsstreetseveryday.Itexploredthe different worlds existing in contemporaryCork through a series of oral history interviewsconcentrating on the informal in life: the chat,stories, childhood memories, nicknames, slang,jokesandsongs. While the production rejoices in thefreedom of his childhood and youth, a narratorrevealsthedarkersideofthechangesinTravellercultureandtheresponseofthesettledcommunitytothesechanges.Theproductionisthestoryofone

community’sstruggleandare-emergenceofanewTravelleridentityincontemporaryIreland. Theobjectiveoftheprojectwastopresent,onCorkUniversityHospitalRadio,threepoetsfromEasternEurope who were translated and published inEnglishduringthecourseof2005.BetweenAugustandOctober,thebroadcastsfeaturedwereGuntarsGodinsofLatvia,KatarzynaBorunofPolandandAndres Ehin of Estonia. Also participating weretheir Irish counterpart poets, Eugene O’Connell,GerryMurphy(left)andPatrickCotter.TheradioshowsconsistedofpoetryreadingsinthelanguagesoforiginaswellasinEnglishtranslation.Interviewswith the participants and music selections alsofeatured. This particular projectwas an offshootof a much larger Cork 2005 project involvingthe publication of over thirteen books ofthirteen poets from thirteen different countries. In lateDecember 2005 and early January, Cónal gavereadingsofhisownworkinhealthcaresettingsinCork.InadditiontoareadinginCorkPrison,hereadtoanaudienceof60peoplefromMayfieldDayCareCentreaspartoftheirChristmasgatheringattheAmbassadorHotelinCork.

The readings offered clients, carers and staff theopportunitytoenjoytheworkofalivingwriterbyexperiencingtheworkthroughthewriterhimself,an opportunity which they would not otherwisehavehadaccessto.

Dance Connect was a dance movement classdesigned for children with autism. The aimsfor children were to provide opportunity forinvolvementinasocialsettingthatoffersscopeforleisure activity; promotes personal development;relieves tension and energy in a fun and positiveway, while furthering access to educationalpossibilities. The aims for parents were to offertimeandplacetofocusonpositiveaspectsoftheirchild’sabilities;whilealsobenefitingfromphysicalactivity leading to stress relief, fun and positiveparent/childbonding. Tooffersocialnetworkingandmutualsupportgainedfromworkingalongsideotherparentsofautisticchildren. The classes took place in the SMA ParishCentreoversevenweeksinJulyandAugust.Theclasses,forchildrenaged5-10years,comprisedofamixture of developmentalmovement playwithfreedanceandcreativeactivity.Focuscentredongrounding to help increase concentration levelsandteamwork,aimedtobuildtrustinsafephysicalcontact. This was mixed with more traditionalchildren’smovementgames.Beanbags,ballsandaplay parachute helped to add colour, stimulationand fun,while themusic provided an overridingmotivatingandintegralparttoeverysession.

OutcOMesSoexcitedweretheparentsbythebenefitsoftheclass, that they funded a further sevenweeks by

themselves.Theyweredelightedthattheirchildrenhadbegun to settle,becomingaccustomed to theroutine, room and the other participants. Thechildren became better able to concentrate andfollowinstructions;tookaleadinsuggestingwhatexercisesandgamestheywantedandevenbegantorespondpositivelyandengagewithoneanotherduringplay. Attendance at the classes was high and allthe parents were amazingly enthusiastic aboutsupportingtheirchildren.Bytheendofthecoursetheparentsfeltbetterinformedabouttheirchild’sownparticularphysicalabilities.Theyalsoenjoyedsharinginsomefuntimetogether!

The Cork 2005/HSE ‘Tea Dance’ took place intheCityHall,Corkontheafternoonof9October2005. Entertainment was provided by the CorkPops Orchestra, Ireland’s only CommunityOrchestra,conductedbyEvelynGrant,a lecturerattheCorkSchoolofMusicandpresenteronRTÉLyric FM. The orchestra was joined by specialguest Carl Corcoran (RTÉ Lyric FM BreakfastShow)whosanga selectionofnumberswith theorchestra.DancersenjoyedarangeofmusicfromJohann Strauss to Abba and demonstrated theirdancingskills inwaltzes, tangos, two-stepsandabitofrock‘n’roll. The Cork Pops Orchestra’s Tea Danceswere devised by Gerry Kelly and grew from the

successfulMillennium‘TeaDance’projectfor‘TheYoungatHeart’.Thedancesrecognisetheroleofa previous generation in creating today’s Irelandandofferawonderfulopportunitytocelebrateandacknowledgethiscontribution. Therewasacapacityattendanceof800HSEclientsfromCorkcityandcounty.Sincetheevent,there has been constant correspondence asking‘When is the next one?’ The musicians in theorchestrasay‘Itistheirfavouritegig!’’

The project involved fourperformancesonsuccessivedays in fourdifferentcentres:theShareDayCareCentreonSheareStreet;The Westgate Foundation, Ballincollig; CarraigMór Centre, Shanakiel; and Cork UniversityHospital.Theyinvolvedfolkdance,musicandsongperformancesbygroupsrepresentingfourdifferentnations:Holland,Poland,SardiniaandBrittany.Inall,nearly200performerstookpart. The Polish group Zespół Pieśni I Tańca‘Wałbrzych’ presented folk dances from differentregions and also performed Polish songs andnationaldances.Sardiniangroup,Citt`diSennori,performed traditional Sardinian dances and, inparticular, dancesof theLogudoro region,wherethey come from. The third group was one ofBrittany’sbesttraditionaldancegroups,TheCelticCircle of Rennes, who wear beautiful costumesdatingfromthe1870sand1920sfromtheRennesarea.Dutchgroup,ThePierewaaiers,afolkdance-demonstration group fromNijmegen inHolland,wereaccompaniedbyanaccomplishedseven-pieceliveband.

‘King Lear and the Three Rs: Reflect, Respond,Receive’ was a three-part programme stemmingfrom the Cork Opera House/Janus TheatreCompanyproductionofKing Lear. AcentralthemerunningthroughKing Learisthe journeyof aging: lossofpower, relationshipswith adult children and ultimately, the wisdomgainedthroughtheexperienceofalonglife.Thisprogramme honoured the life experiences of theelderlybyenlistingagroupof15olderpeopleasconsultantstotheproduction. BelindaWild(directorofKing Learandartisticdirector of Janus Theatre Company) and actorsStephenWyley (Duke of Gloucester) and AdrianScanlon(EdmundandTheFool)ledtwointeractiveworkshopswith15olderpeopleintheBishopstownSeniorSocialCentreinAugustandSeptember2005.Theactorsperformedselectedscenes,discussedtherehearsal process and challenges that they facedin developing their characters. Belinda furtherbroughttheseniorcitizensintothecreativeprocessbybringinginanddiscussingthemodelset,masks,costumesandprops. A particular challenge for the 28-year-oldactorStephenWyleywas toconvincinglyportraytheelderlyDukeofGloucester.DuringtheirvisitstoBishopstown,theolderpeoplespokemovinglyoftheheartbreakthatchildrencancause;ofhowtheywouldfeelifbetrayedbyachild,asGloucester

isbetrayedbyhisson,Edmund;ofthechallengesofaging.Additionally,theyofferedadviceonvoiceandmovement. Theolderpeopleattended theopeningnightperformance of King Lear in the Half MoonTheatreinCorkOperaHouse,followedbyapost-performancereceptionwiththecast. ‘At Play With Puppets’ introduced 13 non-national children and parents from the KinsaleRoad Accommodation Centre, an asylum seekercentre, to several Cork cultural and recreationinstitutions inMarch2005.The families traveledbycoachtoCorkOperaHousewheretheyenjoyedahigh-energyperformanceoftheLambertPuppetTheatre’s Sleeping Beauty, with lots of laughterandaudienceparticipation. They were then brought to the playgroundatFitzgeraldParkandcouldbarelybetornawaytoeattheirpicniclunches.Onelittleboy,Yianko,evenhadanimpromptu“friendly”withaFrenchfootballteamthatwaskickingaballaroundinthepark. After lunch they attended a puppet-makingworkshop with Dowtcha Puppets at Cork CityMuseumwherethechildrenmadesimplepuppetsof newspaper, masking tape, sticks, yarn andfabric,followedbyavisittothe‘MagicofMasksandPuppets’exhibitionupstairs. The families who participated were fromNigeria,Ghana, andAlbania.Noneof themhadeverbeforevisitedCorkOperaHouse,FitzgeraldPark,ortheCityMuseum.TheyhadawonderfuldayandapositiveintroductiontoseveralofCork’spremier facilities. At the end of the day, theyreturned to the Accommodation Centre with a

bigbagofpaints,brushes,glue,tape,plasticeyes,etc., so they could continue working on theirpuppetsintheCentre.

In addition to the commencement of MusicNetwork’s Music in Healthcare/Mental Healthproject in St. Stephen’s Hospital, Glanmire andCarrigmore Centre, Shanakiel, Music Networkarrangedaconcerton19May2005bythreewell-knowntraditionalIrishmusicianswhowere,atthetime, engaged on aMusicNetworkBest of IrishconcerttourofIreland.Theartists,DesiWilkinson(flute),MáirtínO’Connor(accordion)andBrendanO’Regan (bouzouki) performed to a large crowdinSt.Stephen’sHospital,includingvisitingclientsandstafffromCarrigmoreCentre. The concert’s principle aims were to kick-startaseriesofparticipativeMusicinHealthcareworkshopsinthetwocentresandtobringahighqualitylivemusiceventtoagroupofpeoplewhomightnototherwisehavetheopportunitytoaccesssuchanopportunity. The concert was enjoyed by both staff andclients, with some clients finding their voice andjoiningin.Theconcertprovedasuccessfulmeansof stimulating interest in and support for thesubsequent participative workshops within thetwo centres. The artists reported that they wereextremelymovedby the experienceofplaying totheassembledgroupofclientsandstaff.

Thevisitof theTrinidadandTobagoRegimentalSteel Band was arranged by Brother MatthewFeheney during a visit to Trinidad in January2005.Fiftyfivemembersofaparty(including45musicians) arrived inCorkon7 June.On9 and10 June they performed in various workshops,including a concert at St Luke’sHall whichwascrowded with schoolchildren and adults. On 10June the Orchestra also performed for staff andclientsoftheIrishGuideDogsfortheBlind.ThiswasfollowedbyperformancesinCork’smainstreet,PatrickStreet,on11Junetogreatacclaimfromthelargecrowdthatgathered,MahonShoppingMallandUniversityCollegeCork.

Theperformanceswereenjoyedbyallandprovidedtheopportunitytohearoneoftheworld’sleadingsteelbands.Clientsinthehealthcaresettingsandotheraudiencemembersalsoenjoyedaccesstothismusicaltraditionwhichtheyotherwisewouldnothavehad.
