Eat good, feel good!• Aim to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables each

day. They are packed with essential vitamins, minerals and fibre.

• Cut down on your portions. Swapping your usual plate for a smaller one can help you control your portion size.

• Being distracted can make you eat more without realising you are getting full. Try to eat your meals at the table rather than in front of the TV.

• Get more fibre in your diet. Swapping white bread for wholemeal is an easy way to increase your fibre.

• If you drink every day, try to have at least 2 alcohol-free days each week.

Managing diabetes In the UK, diabetes affects around 2.8 million people. By making a few changes to your lifestyle, you can reduce the risk of developing diabetes:

• Adults should aim to do at least 2 hours 30 minutes of exercise a week.

• Smoking can increase the risk of developing diabetes. If you want help to stop smoking, text ‘QUIT’ to 82540.

• Eat a healthy, balanced diet. You don’t have to cut out all the things you enjoy; eating healthily is about moderation.

• Drink sensibly - no more than 2 units of alcohol per day for women and 3 units for men.

• Visit your GP for advice and support if you have any concerns about your health or think you may be at a high risk of developing diabetes.

SUMMER HEALTHProtect yourself and your family this summer, and stay safe while you enjoy the weather!

• Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 which protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

• Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm – the hottest time of the day.

• Drink cold drinks regularly, such as water and fruit juice. Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol.

• Wear loose clothing and a hat when you go outdoors.

Stop hay fever ruining your summer

• Don’t sit outside between 4pm and 7pm or in the early morning, when the pollen count is at its highest.

• Dust with a wet cloth to collect the pollen and stop it spreading around. Pollen can also live in carpet for three months, so vacuum regularly.

• Pollen can stick to your hair and transfer to your pillow when you go to bed. Washing your hair in the evening can help you sleep better.

• Talk to your GP or pharmacist to see if it is worth trying a new treatment.

Stay healthy at workMany office workers spend a large proportion of their time sat at a desk, which can result in back pain and repetitive strain injury. By doing some simple stretches at your desk, you can stay healthier at work.

• Loosely grasp your hands behind your neck. Push your elbows back and draw your shoulder blades together. Avoid pressing into the neck. Hold for five seconds.

• Interlock your fingers. Push your palms away from your body, gently stretching the forearm muscles, fingers and shoulder blades and hold for five seconds.

• Reach over your head, bending to the side at your waist and then straighten up. Swap sides and repeat 10 times.

Staying healthy this winterIf you think you might have flu:

• Stay at home to prevent it spreading further.

• Do not visit health venues unless it’s an emergency as you could make other vulnerable people very ill.

• Rest, keep warm, drink plenty of water and treat symptoms with over the counter medicines.

• Telephone your GP if you are concerned.

If you are over 65, have a long term health condition such as COPD, asthma or diabetes, or if you are pregnant you can have a free flu vaccine. Call your GP surgery today for an appointment. Photo by Jennifer Sherwen, Gosforth

December 2013Christmas is here! It’s time to be merry and get in the festive spirit – but all that planning, shopping, wrapping, cooking and entertaining can be overwhelming. Here are some tips to survive the festive season!

• Set a budget for Christmas spending and stick to it. It really is the thought that counts.

• Drink in moderation and if you are driving, stick to soft drinks.

• Doing something nice for someone else can make you feel happier. Give your time to a local charity or donate gifts to people in need.

• If you are ill over the holidays make sure you choose the right NHS service so that you get the best treatment. Many common illnesses and injuries can be treated at home with a well stocked medicine cabinet. For more information visit www.cumbria.nhs.uk/YourHealth/ChooseWell

• Make sure you take some time to relax and enjoy the festivities after all that preparation! Sing out at a local carol service, relax in front of a Christmas film or take the kids to visit santa’s grotto.
