Cupertino Claims Reeord.W reeking Cureton Relays Fremont District track and field athletes are looking ahead to a usual strong showing in the SCVAL Championships get- ting underway Thursday with prelims on the Diesner Field track at Fremont High. All of the estimated 2,500 persons who witnessed the second annual Tom Cureton Re- lays Friday night at Diesner will ,agree the Fremont schools, particularly Cupertino and Homestead, will offer favored Lydiard Guest Speaker Arthur Lydiard, famed track an.d field coach from New Zea- land, will speak Monday night at a special program in the audio-visual room at St. Fran- cis High School in. Mountain View. All persons interested in track and Lydiard's views on distance running are invited to attend the program starting at 7:30·p.m. Lydiard coached the New Zealand Olympic teams in 1960and 1964when Peter Snell won three gold medals (two in 800 meters and one at 1500) and Murray Halberg one (10,000 meters) . The internationally known coach is also recognized as an outstanding public speaker. Los Altos a strong argument for team laurels. Although Homestead won eight events and Cupertino only three, the Pioneers finished sec- ond in 10 of the 18 to nose out the Mustangs, 66-64.Homestead had annexed the crown the first year. Lynbrook won three events and was third in team c.ompetition with 53 points. and Sunnyvale took four first and was fourth with 41 points. Fre- mont had 37 and Monta Vista 4. Benny Brown of Sunnyvale nipped Cupertino's Jeff Fowler in the 100 with a rapid 9.8 and Jet Jerry Munson took the Frosh 100 in 10.6 and both helped their teams annex long and triple jump relays. Brown leaped 22-4% to lead all long jumpers. A 46~ triple jump by Craig Conway on his last effort gave Cupertino second place in the event and Homestead was third and that reversal of positions meant the team crown for the Pioneers instead of a 65-65tie. Cupertino also took the high jump as a huge crowd gathered and stayed to watch long after the running events had been completed. Homestead won the pole vault as Doug Olson cleared 14 ft., well over his previous high of 13-3, and Mark Waller whirled the discus 177-71hto pace the Mustangs to the discus crown. Paul Gaesser had a 1:56.9 spli t in the 880 portion of the sprint medley which Homestead won and Mustang Tom Brassell had a 1:57.1 leg in his stint of a winning two-mile relay. Randy Stahl ran a 4:24.0 mile to anchor Homestead to vic- tory in the distance medley.
