It presents a curriculum that emphasizes the multidisciplanary approach to the problem. The value of the publication is enhanced by the inclusion of references to the various sections. Current Controversies in Orthodontics. Melsen B (ed), with 14 contributors. Chicago, IL, Quintessence, 199 1,3 14 pages, illustrated This book brings together experts in the field to evaluate selected controversial issues to differentiate “traditional” concepts from those that are supported by scientific data. Among the topics of interest to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon are dentofacial morphology and breathing; occlusion, malocclusion, and craniomandibular function; functional appliances; limitations in adult orthodontics; and rigid fix- ation for orthognathic surgery. Infections of the Head and Neck. Laskin DM, Strauss RA (eds), with 22 contributors. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America, vol 3, no 2, 1991, 459 pages, il- lustrated The emphasis in this volume is on the updating of infor- mation in those areas currently undergoing change. The var- ious chapters provide discussions of immunology, microbi- ology, diagnostic imaging, antibiotics, and viral and fungal infections, as well as of specific conditions of odontogenic, salivary gland, sinus, dermatologic, otologic, and orbital or- igin. A chapter on protection of the surgeon against infection also is included. Intraoral Orthotics. Bledsoe WS (ed), with 18 contributors. Cranio Clinics International, vol 1, no 2, Baltimore, MD, Williams & Wilkins, 1991, 2 15 pages, illustrated, $60.00 This volume presents a broad range of diagnostic and ther- apeutic philosophies using a variety of occlusal appliances. Most of the chapters deal with the specific type of orthotic favored by the authors. Although a definitive answer to the question of selection is not provided, knowledge of the avail- able options and the reasons for their use at least allow the clinician to make a more informed decision. A Clinical Atlas of Endodontic Surgery. Bellizzi R, Loushine R. Chicago, IL, Quintessence, 1991, 135 pages, illustrated This atlas combines concise text with numerous excellent illustrations to demonstrate the surgical techniques com- monly used in endodontics. Each chapter begins with a brief outline of the objectives and is then followed by a description of that specific aspect of the procedure. Finally, these basic principles are applied in the illustration of endodontic surgery in various regions of the maxilla and mandible. Head and Neck Imaging (ed 2). Som PM, Bergeron RT (eds), with 29 contributors. St Louis, MO, Mosby-Year Book, 199 1, 1152 pages, 2,495 illustrations As a result of the many changes in the field of radiology during the past decade, the editors of this textbook have completely revised its content. Each of the 13 chapters thor- oughly examines the imaging of a specific anatomic region as well as the pertinent embryology, anatomy, and pathology. The numerous illustrations and extensive referencing add to the value of the book. Oral and Maxlllofacial Radiology: Radiologic/Pathologic Correlations. Miles DA, Van Dis M, Kaugers GE, et al. Phil- adelphia, PA, Saunders, 1991, 335 pages, illustrated This book takes a unique approach to radiology of the oral and maxillofacial region by emphasizing the relationship be- tween histopathology and radiographic image. Each lesion is discussed separately, with sections on clinical features, ra- diographic appearance, histologic findings, and treatment options. When appropriate, clinical pictures of the lesion are provided, along with multiple radiographs and photomicro- graphs. Surgical Orthodontic Treatment. Proffit WR, White RP Jr (eds), with 6 contributors. St Louis, MO, Mosby-Year Book, 199 1, 722 pages, 2,053 illustrations The material presented in this book is divided into four major sections. The first covers indications for treatment, the second approaches to diagnosis and treatment planning, the third surgical principles and procedures, and the fourth man- agement of specific clinical problems. The emphasis throughout the book is on the orthodontic and surgical op tions, and on the interaction between these two specialties.
