CV  writing  for  Apprentices  MAKING  THE  MOST  OF  YOUR  EXPERIENCES

IMORTANT  BITS

Make  sure  your  CV  is  well  presented  and  easy  to  read.  Try  to  use  a  font  like  Arial  or  Calibri,  avoid  using  ‘fonts  with  feet’  like  Times New Roman,  and  do  not  use  comic sans  under  any  circumstances.

Your  CV  should  be  no  more  than  2  sides  of  A4.  Try  not  to  split  sections  over  pages.  Make  sure  you  print  double  sided  so  that  there  is  no  chance  of  parts  of  your  CV  going  missing.

Do  not  include  a  selfie  on  your  CV.

Do  not  include  your  date  of  birth  on  your  CV.

Do  not  use  colours  on  your  CV.  Colours  can  be  hard  to  read  and  might  mean  that  your  prospective  employer  misses  some  important  bits  of  information.

Don’t  lie.

WHAT  SHOULD  YOU  INCLUDE?

CONTACT  DETAILS

Your  full  name,  mobile  phone  number,  email  address,  and  home  address

Please  make  sure  your  email  is  sensible.  [email protected]  is  better  than  [email protected].

Make  sure  that  the  phone  number  you  list  will  accept  calls  from  withheld  numbers,  and  make  sure  that  if  you  get  a  call,  you  answer  it!

PERSONAL  PROFILE

Your  personal  profile  should  capture  the  attention  of  the  reader.  You  should  give  a  summary  of  your  best  skills  and  traits,  as  well  as  what  you  hope  to  achieve.  Try  to  make  the  skills  you  mention  as  relevant  to  your  chosen  field  as  possible.  For  example:

I  am  currently  looking  for  an  Apprenticeship  in  IT.  I  am  a  technically  minded  individual  with  an  excellent  attention  to  detail.  I  have  experience  of  both  coding  and  building  computers  and  I  am  keen  to  build  on  these  skills  in  a  professional  environment.

EDUCATION

Your  education  section  should  be  in  reverse  chronological  order.  This  means  that  your  most  recent  qualifications  should  be  at  the  top  of  your  CV,  and  the  earliest  qualifications  should  be  at  the  end.  You  need  to  make  sure  that  you  include  the  name  of  the  school  or  college,  the  dates  you  attended,  the  full  title  of  the  qualification,  and  the  grades  you  achieved.  You  should  also  include  any  qualifications  you  have  yet  to  complete.

Example  1:  Lancaster  and  Morecambe  College  (September  2014  –  July  2015)  BTEC  Level  2  Diploma  in  Animal  Care.  Grade:  Merit

Example  2:  Morecambe  Community  High  School  (September  2010  –  July  2015)  GCSE  English  Language:  C  GCSE  English  Literature:  C  GCSE  Maths:  C  etc

EMPLOYMENT/  WORK  EXPERIENCE

Your  employment  (or  work  experience  if  you  have  no  formal  employment)  should  be  organised  in  reverse  chronological  order.  You  need  to  include  the  name  of  your  employer,  the  dates  you  were  employed,  your  job  title,  and  a  description  of  your  duties.  These  may  be  presented  as  bullet  points,  or  as  a  paragraph.  For  example:

Bella  Italia.  Waitress  (May  2015  –  January  2016)  In  this  role  I  was  responsible  for  providing  excellent  customer  service  while  seating  and  serving  customers  and  advising  customers  on  set  menu  dishes  and  specials.  Cash  handling  and  managing  customer  complaints  were  also  key  elements  of  my  role.

ADDITIONAL  SKILLS

If  you  have  any  other  skills  or  qualifications  you  should  include  them  here.  For  instance,  you  may  want  to  mention  that  you  have  a  driving  license  or  a  first  aid  certificate.  If  you  are  working  with  children  it  would  be  useful  to  mention  any  E&D,  safeguarding,  or  confidentiality  training  you  may  have  undertaken.  Don’t  forget  you  want  to  make  yourself  stand  out  from  the  crowd.

HOBBIES

Don’t  forget,  you  are  applying  to  work  for  a  company,  not  just  to  do  a  job.  The  employer  needs  to  make  sure  that  you  are  a  good  fit  for  the  company,  not  just  the  job.  Try  to  talk  about  hobbies  and  interests  you  currently  have,  and  remember  that  you  may  be  asked  about  them  at  interview.  Also  remember  that  x-‐box  and  Hollyoaks  are  not  hobbies.

REFERENCES

You  may  want  to  write  your  references  in  full  or  you  may  wish  to  write  ‘References  available  on  request’.  Please  make  sure  you  ask  your  referees  before  you  give  them  to  employers!
