• Don’t just reveal personal info to just anybody! (the photos you share might give you away, e.g., school uniform, recognizable surroundings, etc.)

• Don’t just accept anybody as ‘friend’; NEVER just meet anybody you may have known on the Internet.

• Beware of PHISHING activities (on your email, on your Facebook wall…) Delete!

• Remember: Everything posted on the Net can be used by somebody else for the wrong motives (reasons different from those it was originally intended for).

• Imagine your Mom/Dad or your prospective employer or future High School teacher … or the Pope… is constantly looking at & reading your Facebook status msg…– Msgs that would give a good image of you– Don’t curse, get angry, etc.– Msgs that would market what you want to market

1. Always positive [=creative, formative]

*Are you ashamed / afraid to ‘tweet’:• Scriptural passages?• Info/clarification about the Pope?• JMJ [WYD] 2011?• chastity.com [Jason Evert]?• Pro-life stuff?

Page 18: Cyber awareness highschoolers

2. Make a ‘dent’-Influence! Spread good ideas…

Your FB wall:Your friends’ feeds show up on the basis of 3 criteria:• The most recent,• The most commented,• Those “liked” by the most people.Friends’ feeds not meeting these criteria don’t show up,

whereas those with most points are shown at the top and stay there for longer. So, if you find one that’s interesting [aka, useful, helpful], you can do the following:

(1) “Like” it (2) “Share” / “re-post” it

Page 19: Cyber awareness highschoolers

2. (cont’d)

• (3) Leave a comment, even just a :-)  or “Great news!” (Facebook does not distinguish between a one-word comment and an academic treatise.) Thus, when your friends log into Facebook, those would be the first news they’d see. Also, you make Google show these news higher up in searches, as Google treats each “like” or comment in Facebook more or less like a hit on a news item.

3. F A C E your book! :-) F A C E yourself…

TIPS: For those trying to be ‘internet evangelists’

• For Catholics on the Internet:Link: Eric Sammons “Rules of Engagement for Catholics on the Internet”

1) Always remember the superiority of the real world over the virtual world.

2) Your salvation is more important than your involvement on the Internet.

3) Don’t ever say anything on the Internet that you wouldn’t say in person.

4) Don’t write anything in anger.

5) Don’t stereotype people.

6) Take at least one day off a week from the Internet.

7) Always assume the good intentions of others.

8.) Remember who the real Enemy is.

9) Remember that God resists the proud.

10) Don’t just go to Catholic sites.

At the moment of writing, consider the following:1. Make sure your piece is appealing. Add some visuals:

photos, VIDEOS!, short paragraphs.2. Try to numerate your ideas: that way, you could

organize them better.3. Give concrete examples, tell stories or anecdotes;

otherwise, you’d bore your audience to death  4. Ask your readers for feedback or comments: many

blogs nowadays allow free-flowing comments and discussions.

5. Acknowledge your sources/references.6. Solutions:  Provide solutions and answers that people

ask from you.  Don’t leave them in the dark… or at least tell them you don’t have the answer…

7. Write POSITIVE: content is King!

• The following is KEY: start a conversation, and make your friends speak up. The more people you get involved in the conversation, the greater your Christian influence in cyberspace! How could you start? Begin using your Facebook status msg more strategically !

Teach others! Learn the rules…
