Accomplishments

Jennifer Dahl, left, presents Lean Green Belt and Certificate to Cynthia Shaw, November 6, 2014.

Congratulations to Cynthia Shaw, CPSM, CPPB, for successful completion of the required coursework for the Lean Six Sigma Certified Green Belt from the University of Washington - Tacoma. To earn the certificate, Cynthia completed 40 hours of education and accomplished a Lean project during the course conducted in October 2014. She made a real personal commitment by paying her own tuition and attending the evening classes on her own time. An early champion of Lean supply chain practices, Cynthia has actively participated in the Lean Practitioner Community of Practice for almost two years and read several books on the subject. She applies Lean principles in her daily work and enthusiastically shares her knowledge with others. Cynthia has been selected to represent the Accounting and Financial Services Division as a WSDOT Lean Practitioner in support of the newly established Lean Process Improvement Office. Cynthia is an active member of the Washington State Chapter of NIGP and holds two professional certifications: Certified Professional Public Buyer (CPPB) and Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM). As the consumable inventory supervisor in the Procurement and Materials Management Office of AFS, Cynthia manages the consumable inventory for WSDOT. With over $25 million in supplies and materials located in more than 600 inventory control points around the state, Cynthia ensures that operating programs have “what they need - where they need it” to meet critical mission requirements.

Washington Chapter Dinner

We have made it through another year and it was time to celebrate our 2nd annual holiday dinner at C.I. Shenanigans in Tacoma on December 11th. Even though it was a stormy night a number of members braved the weather and made the trip to Tacoma to celebrate. The Christmas trivia (page 6) and white elephant gift exchange added extra fun to an already exciting evening.

For all of you that could not make it to the Chapter Dinner wanted to share the trivia game with you. This could be a fun activity with family and friends during the holidays. Answers will follow in February’s edition.

The Return……

BY JOSH KLIKA

WSDOT

Once again, Larry Oline, Contracts and Purchasing Manager for Dept. of Agriculture, and Membership Secretary for our chapter, volunteered to take on the role of Moderator for our second Fireside Chat.

The topic of this event was: “Adopting Lean Methods to Complete a Project”

The Guest Speaker: Howard Cox, Business Process Manager, DES

Howard’s presentation provided a real life example of how to use the agile and visual management concepts on a project all in the room were familiar with, the Agency Risk Assessments. Howard shared his story, using a power point, about how they used some basic lean principles and great team work to accomplish the challenge to get the risk assessment completed in a very short time.

Being the seasoned moderator that he is, Larry kept the meeting equally balanced between informality and work, sharing some recent pictures of the two fish he caught Sunday on the Kalama River.

On the work side, Howard’s presentation also sparked other discussions to branch out into some of the recent changes at DES and the required training that is coming out in January. Also, it sparked conversation between those in attendance who worked together, meaning the author of this article was asked by his boss, “Josh, are you ready to do a project board like this for our office?” Oh oh…..it leads one to think… Dave Davis and I the moderators for the next Fireside Chat?
