Historians like R.S. Sharma and V.K. Thakur observe that after 300 A.D. therewas a general decline of earlier urban centres on account of the poor quality of buildingsmade of reused bricks or the desertion of some older sites in the Gupta period. Sharmaeven says that gold coins were utilized for transactions like the purchase of and thatthe smaller transactions were carried out either by barter or cows.

He has not taken into account the system of Akshayanivi or Nividharma, Whichgenerated income to be utilized for various purposes. The utilization of other brickscannot be the final criteria to decide the fall of towns, because new bricks were alsomanufactured in the Gupta period. Besides, Sharma’s inferences about the Kushanaand Gupta bricks are based on a very limited exposure of structures. To the best of myknowledge, no large scale horizontal excavations of sites containing the Gupta andKushan structural remains have so for been done. Ahichhatra (Bareilly, U.P) or Nagarin Tonk Rajasthan are one such site where we actually notice utilization of fresh bricksin non-religious structures. The Gupta period saw even the introduction of newertechniques of brick construction.
