NSAD 2014 TOURNAMENT NEWS SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2014 Volume: (under review) Issue 5 IN THIS ISSUE: July Dingo Winners August Dingo Winners Upcoming DAD Events New Members Birthday, Member Anniversary From the Athletic Director: Dave Smith: At the NSAD tournaments held at Fort Lauderdale Florida, DAD Men’s Softball team was the most improved and successful team. We will have more motivation and stronger team next year. Next year’s tournaments will possibly be at Omaha Nebraska. Congratulations to Detroit Men’s softball players and thank you all for supporting us all year. We look forward to hosting a few events and fundraisers in the 2014-2015 year. We played 7 games. 4 win and 3 lost. First game Detroit 23-1 Florida Beach Bum 2nd game Detroit 5 to Chicago Old Style 11 3rd game Detroit 8 to Maryland 7 4th game Detroit 11 to Texas 12 5th game Detroit 12 to Chicago Old Style 9 6th game Detroit 13 to DC Showstopper 4 7th game Detroit 6 to Chicago Mafia 15 Willie Mullen is our all-star player. Pat our backs for wonderful and successful 2014 year. Look forward to the next NSAD tournament. Thank you to the Detroit and softball fans. From the Athletic Director: Karen Groth: It has been awhile since The Detroit Association of the Deaf has had any women’s sports representing in a major tournament. The SWAT softball team recruited players within the region of C.A.A.D and a few free agent players. 14 Women in all went to Florida to represent DAD in the National Softball Association of the Deaf (NSAD) for the first time in over 15 years. There were 12 other teams in Florida. SWAT finished 7th out of 12 teams. We are very proud of the team as it was the first time all of us have played together. Liza O’Jack led the way in pitching and was phenomenal in her role for the team. Judy Shepherd was hot in her defensive skills in the outfield. She chased all the balls down and made quite a few spectacular plays that was short of amazing. Jillian Newman and Mary Ellen Graham made an awesome duo up the middle. They both knocked everything down that came in their path. So much to mention and so little space to do it in. It is in hope that some of the pictures will show how amazing these girls were. SWAT will be busy in the 2014 – 2015 year to raise more money so that we can return to the NSAD every year and represent the women’s athletic for DAD and it is the goal to return to the top as it was many years ago. Thank you all for your support, it would not have been possible to do without you all.

SWAT NEWS: by Karen Groth - The Women’s Softball Team, Softball With an Attitude (SWAT) finished the year with 5 wins 6 losses and 1 tie. This is also the first year that SWAT made the playoffs. Due to conflicting scheduling with NSAD, SWAT was unable to play in the playoffs due to key players not being available to play. SWAT has come a long way since the team has started to play over 5 years ago. Each year these women improve in their skills and ability to play.

NEWS

Happy Birthday to you! We hope you have a great birthday! If we missed your name, let Craig Schlorff know so he can update the member list so we can give a shout out to the birthday members. Craig’s email and contact information is on page 2.

The last 2 years SWAT finally has had the same women come back and play and that has contributed to the record that SWAT has for the 2014 year. Each and every player was the most valuable player for the season. SWAT would not have been able to finish the season without these women and their desire in having fun to play and represent The Detroit Association of the Deaf. Last, but not least. THANK YOU FANS.. We have had more fans this year come out and support the team. We appreciate your loyalty and support.. Looking forward to another winning season in 2015…
