We want people who are excited to work here. Why are you interested in being a part of
The Stanford Daily business team?
(150 words or less)

1. Sales associates must make many calls to business owners and managers they do not
know in order to explain the benefits of advertising with The Stanford Daily. Do you have
any experience making such “cold calls”? (For example for sales, fundraisers, political
campaigns.)
1a. How did you do? How long did you do this? (approximate # of calls or hours) How did
you feel about making those calls?
2. Success in sales requires perseverance, for instance when a business owner or
manager decides not to advertise or does not even return your calls or emails or when
some administrative issue delays or prevents a sale from completing. Can you give an
example of how you motivated yourself to succeed when the odds were against you?
3. How do you best learn a new job? (Pick one or more and briefly explain your answer.)
a. Figure it out yourself, preferably with no criticism from others
b. Read the job requirements, guidebook, rules, etc.
c. Learn from someone who has done the job before
d. Observe someone else doing the job
4. Do you find targets and goals to be useful to achieving success? Why or why not?

5. Would you describe yourself as a positive and optimistic person? Why or why not?
6. In the newspaper business, deadlines are very important. People need to complete
certain tasks so that others can complete their related tasks on deadline. What does
dependability mean to you?
7. Sales requires individual work, but sharing what works and what does not with others
on the sales team helps everyone be more successful.
(A) Please describe an instance when you shared your idea(s) with others on a
team, which led to the team’s success.
(B) Please describe an example of something you learned from a team, which led
to your success.
8. Newspaper sales and advertising are not “used car sales.” Success requires
developing a genuine, fair and lasting relationship with customers. Please describe a
positive customer relationship you have had (as seller or buyer) and what made it
positive?
