The 2012 NDHSCA Coaches Convention/NHSACA Annual Meeting has been in the planning stages for nearly three years, and now the plan-ning is coming to fruition. With Mr. Dave Dougherty, National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) President and Donald Prokes, NHSACA Executive Director, serving as a planning and coordinat-ing committee from the national per-spective, the North Dakota High Schoo l Coaches Assoc ia t ion (NDHSCA) Office has been the exe-cuting arm of the planning. The activi-ties are set for the week of July 21st through July 27th at the Fargo Holiday Inn Convention Center.

Since the invitation was extended to NHSACA to holds its Annual Meet-ing in Fargo, NDHSCA has held fast to retaining the educational aspect of all activities for the week. As NDHSCA has always implemented into its Annual Convention, the week also will have every time slot filled with competent and successful coaches and instructors. The first three days of the Convention will fea-ture NHSACA National Coach of the Year (COTY) Finalists as speakers for most sessions. The exception will be when Finalists do not attend the Ac-tivities or the when Finalists do not access sufficient candidates to fill the first eight 90-minute sessions. In those cases, NDHSCA will provide h igh ly - success fu l

NDHSCA 2011-2012 Executive Committee

How things can change in one year’s time! Last year we were hop-ing to just have enough days to get practices in, games in, or meets in to qualify for state. Now we’ve been able to get games in and qualify for state even before the end of March! We’ve come to expect the unex-pected in North Dakota and prepare for it. The same can be said for coaching. Nothing ever seems to go as we plan it. That is why prepara-tion is such an important part of eve-ryone’s program.

As we are knee-deep into our spring activities, we need to remem-ber that the school year is coming to a close. With that, evaluations of the past year of our programs become a must. Take the time to sit down to write both the good and bad of the previous year. Examine and adjust your philosophy. Sit down and visit with a mentor or that coach you re-spect to help you strengthen your program. And most importantly, take in the National and State Coaches’ Convention. There are many very good speakers that will be putting on sessions that range from sport spe-cific to special topics. With our mem-bership at 1100 strong, I would en-courage everyone to take advantage of this convention! Whether you

want to get graduate credit, be-come a certified coach, or just want to pick up a few pointers, plan on attending. There will be ample opportunities to grow professionally. I would also en-courage you to become in-volved in the NDHSCA either by serving on your sport’s advi-sory committee or serving on the NDHSCA Board. It is a great way to learn about all the work that goes on behind the scenes of North Dakota high school sports.

letes of the Year. The whole state was treated to some ex-cellent individual and team per-formances. Starting with re-gional hockey and gymnastics in mid-February and culminat-ing with the State Class B Girls’ Tournament at the end of March, coaches, athletes, and fans gave us many memorable plays in search of a champion-ship. After having lived 48 years in North Dakota, it never ceases to amaze me how pas-sionate this state is when it comes to its co-curricular ac-tivities. It is a great way to edu-cate our student-athletes out-side the classroom. Through the highs and lows of the post-season comes many teachable moments. I challenge all of us to use those times to make not only our schools but our com-munities a reflection of the highest ideals of interscholastic competition.

Finish the school year strong. Stay the course. Finish the journey!

The four registration pages on the website are identical to the registra-tion forms in this issue of the Dakota Coach. As of today (April 27th), we have had 24 registrations. That is not great when we consider that we have only ten of our 14 NHSACA COTY Finalists regis-tered. Also all nine of our NDHSCA Executive Committee members have registered---of course two of our Executive Committee members are also COTY Finalists. I hope all our state’s coaches will register early.

We just received some great news regarding our members. As you read in the December issue of the Dakota Coach, Bob Zimney and Darrell Anderson, longtime successful track and field coaches will be inducted into the NDHSCA Hall of Fame. Ralph Manley joins the pair as another ac-tive coach and will be the first inductee to make a “father and son” induction into the Hall. Barry McCleary becomes another wrestling coach to be inducted. They will be joined by my former athletic director, Ed Lockwood, from Fargo South High School. Congratulations.

Then Al Knutson sent me the roster of the 2012 North Dakota Hall of Fame inductees; the roster includes Immediate Past President, Dave Zittleman, and Past President, Bob Zimney. They are joined by another former North Dakota track

and field coach, Russ Schmei-chel. Assistant track and field coach at Century High School, Mark Murdock, and former Dickinson High School track and field coach, Gary Selle, are also in the class of in-

When I prepared for the December 15th issue of the Dakota Coach, I thought that the preparation was ahead of schedule. Then, I got caught up in so many things and still produced the edition, late! But this month I am on schedule, but for some reason I expect that the issue will be on the website after May first again.

We have been working 26/8/380 on the summer convention and the details. A special thank you goes to Dave Dougherty for his input and assistance. He has worked endlessly to get information to all NHSACA Board Members as well as coaches throughout the na-tion. Remember we need to push the 2012 NDHSCA Coaches Convention/NHSACA Annual Meeting to eve-ryone throughout the nation.

However, the secret to the success for this year’s coaches’ gathering at the Fargo Holiday Inn will be the attendance of and contributions from North Dakota Coaches. North Dakota Coaches have always been an unbelievable leadership role and this year’s expecta-tions are developing into the same scenario. We just ask that North Dakota Coaches register early and at-tend all sessions. As usual we can have the best speaker-presenters in the world, but the attendees make the sessions a success.

On or about May first, we will post the convention schedule on the NDHSCA website (ndhsca.com). We will add additional speakers as the confirmations are completed and submit the updated schedule to the Webmaster to update the schedule. We will have a huge Tentative Schedule “watermark” running diago-nally across the pages of the schedule until the last confirmation is complete. This will allow all people who investigate the website to keep informed of the sched-ule and the additions to the program. As of today, the NHSACA Coach of the Year Finalists have nearly com-pleted submission of their topic titles.

Begin planning for the NHSACA Annual Meeting/NDHSCA Coaches Convention in Fargo on July 21st-July 27th! Plans must begin with registration. A vital part of registration is to complete the registration form correctly. All NDHSCA coaches will register only with NDHSCA. duction. Wow! What a crew of honorees. I am so proud of being friends with each of these people and certainly want to extend my congratulations to them.

Yesterday, I saw Carl Wall, NDHSCA 16th Presi-dent (1978-1979), and he informed me of his retire-ment from his position as Financial Accountant Ex-ecutive with Merrill Lynch. Carl was a very success-ful Accounts Executive, boys’ basketball coach, and leader. He has been very active in travel and assis-tance to less endowed people throughout the third world countries. He was a very thoroughly prepared football official and has been very active in fundrais-ing for his Alma Mater, Concordia College. Congratu-lations, Carl and best wishes in your retirement.

In one particular weekend in January, I discov-ered that we had two active and one retired coaches in Rochester, MN at Mayo Clinic. Roger Stone, NDHSCA President in 1988-1989 and former football coach at Dickinson High School, was there for a hip replacement only to be sent home because of com-plications. He returned in April but again had to be sent home because of (I don’t understand all these details) some infectious problems.

Rick Sturn, head boys’ basketball and assistant football coach at New Salem, had a tumor removed from a kidney and was given a great prognosis. In April when he returned for his recheck, he was given a clean bill of health and told to make a recheck ap-pointment for next year. Wow! Great news for Rick!

While following the Minnesota State Basketball tournament, I noted three former North Dakota stu-dent-athletes guiding their teams into competition. John Oxton, Fargo North HS (from the late 1970’s), guided his team into the big school competition. Dave Thorson, Fargo South HS class of 1984, men-tored his DeLasalle boys to a state championship. Dave has been a great clinician for us at Dickinson twice. We will also have his presentations this year. Finally, (I hope I can brag a little), my nephew Shawn Naas from McVille High School, coached Mountain Lake to a fourth place finish. They lost to Belgrade in the semis; Belgrade went on to a state championship with a perfect record of 29-0.

One of the many true friends of North Dakota Coaches and a member of the Universal Athletics staff that hosts the “taco bar social” at our convention will be inducted into the Hillsboro High School Hall of Fame in June. Dave will be the youngest inductee to date. Of course, most people know of Dave’s success at Mayville/Portland-C/G High School and his state championships. Keeping the induction into in the fam-ily, Dave is Ed Beyer’s son-in-law and Ed was in-ducted into the Hillsboro Hall in its third year.

Not to be outdone, Ed Beyer also will be honored when he is inducted into the North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame in Jamestown on July 14th. Congratulations, Ed! Another honoree will be Darin Erstad, out-standing athlete at Jamestown High School and Uni-versity of Nebraska, before becoming a major league baseball all-star. Congratulations, Darin! Darin’s schedule does not allow him to be a clinician for the NHSACA/NDHSCA Convention in late July.

Craig Nelson, former North Dakota Mr. Basketball and NDHSCA Senior Athlete of the Year was pro-moted from his Brandon Valley HS assistant boys’ basketball coach position to head basketball coach at Sioux Falls Washington High School. Craig is unable to serve as a clinician this year because of family commitment. Congratulations, Craig!

Of course we were all very excited to see one of our former college coaches take another step up the old ladder in NCAA Division one basketball. Tim Miles accepted the University of Nebraska men’s basketball position after a relatively short stint at Colorado. Craig Smith, a former assistant to Miles and head coach at Mayville State University, re-joined Tim at Lincoln. Congratulations, Tim and Craig.

Dr. Swiontek, NDHSAA Board President, has continued to involve NDHSCA, NDIAAA and NDHSAA in the development of the Coaches Permit Program that would implement a Coaches Education require-ment with a five-year renewal requirement. The NDHSAA Board of Directors will likely make a final adoption of the plan that was developed by NDHSAA, NDHSCA and NDIAAA. ◊

Tuesday has been reserved for North Dakota College/University speakers. This will provide the North Dakota College/University communities an opportunity to display their highly successful coaches’ knowledge and program structure. Mon-day-Wednesday Sessions will always have a 90-minute session arrangement. This allows for combi-nations in planning for one 90-minute speaker, two 45-minute speakers or three 30-minute speakers. This also allows opportunity for colleges/universities to provide more than one speaker for each session.

The original plan included NDSU Athletic Staff to provide speakers (when possible) for the 8:30 session on Tuesday---i.e. NDSU does not have a swimming & diving program; therefore, a coach from another college/university will fill that sport-session. The original plan included UND athletic Staff to pro-vide speakers (when possible) for the 10:30 session on Tuesday---i.e. UND does not have a wrestling program; therefore a coach from another college/university will fill that sport-session.

Another attractive aspect of the NDHSCA/NHSACA combined week is the attractiveness of graduate credit. Coaches will be able to receive up to seven (7) graduate credits during the Meeting--five (5) credits through the University of Sioux Falls (two [2] credits for the Leadership Class from July 21-22, and three [3] credits for the Sport Specific Sessions July 23-25) and two (2) additional credits can be earned through North Dakota State Univer-sity for the Sports Clinics and Seminar Sessions scheduled for July 24-27, 2012. All North Dakota Coaches will register through the NDHSCA Office with the NDHSCA Registration Form (found on the NDHSCA Website and in the Dakota Coach). All registrants, whether from North Dakota or from out-of-state, will have access to all sessions throughout the week.

All North Dakota registrants are reminded that the NDHSCA Registration Fee includes a ticket to the July 26th NDHSCA Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet. However, all registrants (North Da-kota or out-of-state) will need to purchase tickets to attend the NHSACA National Awards Banquet and/or NHSACA National Hall of Fame Luncheon. Sleeping rooms have been blocked for NDHSCA at the Fargo Doublewood Inn (state rates apply--$73.00/night). Sleeping rooms are also available at the Fargo Holiday Inn ($99.00/night).

Another very popular activity over the past five years is the Taco Bar-?!? Can Races that is spon-sored by Universal Athletics. South Dakota, Wyo-ming and Montana Coaches are very experienced in the evening, since Universal Athletics also sponsors the races at their state coaches’ conventions. The Universal Athletics Social is held on Tuesday (July 24th) evening at the Fargo Holiday Inn. Admission requires a registration name tag.

For the first time since the 1991 NHSACA/NDHSCA Convention, a FCA Breakfast will be held on Thursday (July 26th) morning. Rod Olson, from Coaches of Excellence, will be the keynote speaker. Rod has a regularly delivered website message called “Coffee with Coach O.” Rod Olson is a former assistant coach at Jamestown College. The Break-fast is sponsored by State Bank and Trust of Fargo. Admittance will require Convention name tag and a FCA Breakfast ticket that must be picked up at the FCA Booth in the Exhibit Hall. Watch for more infor-mation regarding the FCA Activity on the NDHSCA Website and the NHSACA Website.

NDHSCA has orchestrated the development of the Monday-Friday speakers and sessions. Addi-tional speakers that have been assigned include Bill Williams, from Football Coaches Professional Growth, will center his presentation on tackling. Coach Williams is a presents at all levels---including the NFL. However, his presentations always begin with the basics.

After many years of absence, baseball sessions will be presented Monday-Wednesday. Be sure to check the “ever-changing” Schedule on the NDHSCA Website (ndhsca.com). Additions and changes will be made regularly, as they occur. NDHSCA has con-tacted several highly-successful speakers, but has not received confirmation as of this writing (April 15th). Several top high school and college coaches have been invited to complete the basketball ses-sions. These confirmations will be injected into the schedule also, as they occur. The list of volleyball speakers that have been invited is second to none. Volleyball coaches are always very explicit with their requests. Jim Craven from the Citadel in South Caro-lina returns for four golf sessions. He will be matched with high school coaches and local golf pros for a phenomenal program of golf expertise. Ryan Purdy, University of Minnesota Swimming & Diving Coach, will join another strong list of presenters for swim-ming & diving coaches.

The typical Tuesday Seminar Sessions have been moved to Friday to facilitate the needs of NHSACA. All NDHSCA Advisory Committee sessions with NDHSAA leadership are scheduled for Thursday. Remember, this is the opportunity to input planning changes for each sport. Do not miss those ses-sions. We honestly view the week of athletic coaches who are speaking as the best ever in North Dakota or in any state in the union. The best advice we have is to keep the NDHSCA Website on your daily list of to view activities.

tor for the Forum. In 1999 he was named News edi-tor for a three year period. In 2002 he returned to his position as Sports editor for three years when he moved to a position as feature sports writer for four years. In 2010 he returned to his Sports Editor role that he has held since.

Schnepf is a graduate of West Lyon (IA) High School and University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has received ten first-place writing awards in the North Dakota Newspaper Association contest. He has also received ten first-place writing awards in the Minne-sota Associated Press Sports Editor contest. He has also received two Top 10 daily and Sunday section awards in the Associated Press Sports Editors’ na-tional contest.

Kevin, as sports editor for the Forum, covers any and all areas of the sports complex. He has a great staff that he directs, but is a writer at heart. Kevin has been most noticed for his positive approach to writing about athletes and athletics. His relationship with coaches is extraordinary. As a sports editor he has his staff covering all levels of all sports in the area. He has developed a staff that is willing to work dili-gently to find the feature story from all schools and both genders.

Mike Weber has been a sportswriter for 35 years with his present position with the Bismarck Tribune. He has also held writing stints with the

Nicole Grinsteinner is the daughter of Gregg and Carol Grinsteinner. She has a 4.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) and ranks 4th in her class of 44. Her Act score was 29. Nicole has earned 11 athletic let-ters in the sports of basketball, volleyball and track & field. She earned four letters in three letters in cho-rus, four in student government and four in publica-tions.

She was a member of the prom committee. She was a leader in peer ministry and was an assistant chaplain. She was a senior class officer and a mem-ber of Leadership Dickinson. As a member of the Na-tional Honor Society she held the distinction of being the academic highest honors honor roll. She re-ceived the NDSU Presidential Honor Scholarship.

Casey Kessel, Dickinson Trinity HS Science Teacher wrote a glowing recommendation for Nicole singling out her studies of advanced science class and physics class. Alysia Barman, Dickinson Trinity HS social studies instructor and girls’ basketball coach, was praiseworthy of Nicole’s communication skills as well her positive attitude.

Joshua Haugen is the son of Bryan and Lavonne Haugen. He holds a 3.73 Grade Point Aver-age (GPA) and ranks fourth in his class of 20. His ACT score of 31 is very impressive. He earned 10 athletic letters in the sports of basketball, football, and baseball. He was team captain in football and basketball.

Austin Foss, Hatton HS, who plans to attend NDSU; Nicole Grinsteinner, Dickinson Trinity HS, who plans to attend NDSU; Joshua Haugen, North Star (Cando) HS, who plans to attend University of Mary, will each re-ceive a $500.00 scholarship from NDHSCA and Burger King of North Dakota.

The scholarships will be presented to each student/athlete at the Annual NDHSCA Hall of Fame and COTY Banquet at the Fargo Holiday Inn Convention Center on Thursday, July 26th. The three student-athletes collectively earned 27 athletic letters, 34 activity letters, and ACT scores averaged 30.0. The recipients ranked first, first and fourth respectively in the class rank of their individual schools.

Austin Foss will graduate from Hatton High School with a 3.90 Grade Point Average (GPA). He scored 30 on his ACT test. Austin earned 6 athletic letters in the sports of football and golf. He was a four-year member of band and chorus. He also excelled in speech for three years. Foss was a four year member of FBLS, TSA and ro-botics. David Smith, his football coach, and Sarah Burger, his English teach and speech coach recommended Austin without reservation.

Austin is the son of Justin and Tracy Foss.

Josh also earned letters in band (3), chorus (4), speech (2), drama (3) and student government (2). He was a recognized leader in student govern-ment. He was a three-year member of National Honor Society participated in North Dakota Leader-ship Seminar as a junior and senior. He partici-pated in Youth Bowling for three years. Joshua was a member of Sources of Strength and was on the Knowledge Bowl as a junior. Joshua attended North Dakota Boys State as a senior.

Jeff Hagler praised Joshua from his perspec-tive as a principal, basketball coach and math teacher. Hagler alludes to Joshua as a responsible newspaper reporter and as a proclaimed leader by his peers. Lori Kurtti has had Joshua since his 6th grade music classes. She points out that he has had numerous star ratings an regional and state music contests.

Each of the recipients will receive a $500.00 scholarship from John Walsh and Burger King of North Dakota at the July 26th NDHSCA Coach of the Year and Hall of Fame Banquet in Fargo Holi-day Inn Convention Center.

The North Dakota High School Coaches Association announces the Assistant Coach of the year for the Fall Season 2011.

The awards will be presented during the North Dakota High School Coaches Asso-ciation Hall of Fame and Coach of the Year Banquet to be held at the Fargo Holiday Inn Convention Center on Thursday, July 26, 2012.

Tim Tandeski, Assistant Football Coach at Grand Forks Red River High School, is the winner of the 2011 Fall Season Assistant Coach of the Year Award.

Tim has been coaching for 26 years. He has coached football, wrestling, and track and field. Tim has coached football for 16 years. He works with the Fresh-man football team to build fundamentals to help at the varsity level. Tim has a football record of 71 -38. He guided his Freshman Roughrider Team to a 7-2 record this past fall. The Grand Forks Red River Freshman Football Team scored 346 points in 9 games this past fall and they never ran up the score on any opponent.

Tim was named the Assistant Coach of the Year in Track and Field in 2006. Tim and his wife Penny have three children, Taylor, Tanner, and Madison.

The North Dakota High School Coaches Association announces the Junior High Coach of the Year and Assis-tant Coach of the year for the Winter Season 2011-2012. Rod Garland, Junior High Wrestling Coach at

Oakes High School, is the winner of the 2011-2012 Winter Season Junior High Coach of the Year Award.

Rod has been coaching for 31 years. He teaches the fundamentals to the junior high wrestlers and takes them to tour-naments.

Rod’s career record is 422-144. He has been a part of 29 State Champion Wrestlers, 8 State Championship Teams, and 14 Regional Championship Teams. This past year the Oakes wrestlers had two State Champi-ons, 9 out of 10 wrestlers place in the top 8. This was also the 4th year in a row that Oakes was the Class B State Wrestling Champions. Rod and his wife Deb have one child, Eric.

Dan Olienyk, Assistant Girls’ Basketball Coach at New Salem High School, is the winner of the 2011-2012 Winter Season As-sistant Coach of the Year Award.

Dan has been coaching for 35 years. He has coached track and field as well as boys’ basketball. Dan coaches the junior varsity and c-squad teams at games. He aides the head coach in taping ankles, scouting opponents, and helps with game management during varsity contests.

His career record is 251-126. Dan man-ages the New Salem Golf Course during the summer.

He is the President of the Holstein Booster Club, a member of the Elks, and helps with fund-raisers for the New Salem Civic Club

2012 Special Recognition Awards

The Special Recognition Award became a part of the NDHSCA Awards Program in the early 1980’s when NDHSCA made efforts to recognize individuals in a special way for their services to coaching, the Association’s programs, and individual community athletic programs. Special Recognition Awards dif-fers from the Award of Merit in that these awards are usually more community or Association centered.

The Association made its initial awards to people

who assisted in making the Lions’ All Star Basketball a success. The awards have continued in placing accolades on professional athletes and community individuals who have made North Dakota Athletics a special experience. In 2012, the North Dakota High School Coaches Association’s Executive Committee voted to recognize Bob Gillen, North Dakota High School Hockey Statistician; Carol Gillett, KVLY-TV (Live Sports Broadcasts); Dave Carlsrud, NDHSAA Assistant to Executive Secretary (retired); and Sheryl Solberg, NDHSAA Assistant to the Executive Secretary.

Bob Gillen has served North Dakota High

School Hockey as official statistician for several years. Although he no longer operates out of North Dakota, he continues with statistics as coaches con-vey team and individual results after each game. He also serves as Rocky Mountain District Associate Coach-in-Chief and as Hockey Scout for Rio Grande Valley “Killer Bees” of the Central Hockey League. His services for North Dakota High School Hockey are extraordinary and keeps the efforts as objective as possible. As hockey statistician, Bob also han-dles the All-State Hockey media releases and media releases for other awards.

Carol Gillett has been a fixture with KVLY-TV for several years. She is “that lady who delays NDHSAA televised contests for ‘TV Timeouts.” She has been present for football and basketball contests as a “worker” in the background without any flair or fanfare. She simply raises her hands for the atten-tion of officials and television personnel; official me-dia timeout is held and the “time for play signal” is given for officials to re-engage the contest. Carol’s approach to the task is that this is one of the most important aspects of the game.

In addition, Carol was a public address an-nouncer at Fargo Public Schools for 25 years, until her retirement in 2005. Carol has also been active publicly as she led a petition drive to put full year kin-dergarten on the ballot---which was a successful en-deavor. She received the North Dakota Jayceette Key Woman Award in 1975 and the Lisbon Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 1980.

David Carlsrud served North Dakota coaches,

athletes and athletics diligently as NDHSAA Assis-tant to the Executive Secretary, before retiring in 2010. He was in charge of football, wrestling, base-ball, boys’ basketball, golf and hockey rules and competition. Dave also served as executive to the North Dakota High School Officials Association. He worked very closely with NDHSCA, individual coaches and sports alike from an administrative view.

Dave has been an outstanding sports official and remains a part of the officiating expert even in retire-ment. Last year he was selected as an official for the NDHSAA Basketball Tournament. A dedicated con-ditioning enthusiast, he is a workout eccentric. He previously served NDHSCA coaches in sales of ath-letic apparel and equipment.

Sheryl Solberg will retire from her NDHSAA As-

sistant to the Executive Secretary on July first after 35 years in the position. She has served coaches, athletes and athletics as executive in charge of cross-country, swimming & diving, gymnastics, girls’ bas-ketball, volleyball, track & field, softball, and aca-demic awards. Sheryl has worked closely with coaches, officials and administrators alike from the NDHSAA administrative view.

Sheryl is a Minot High School and Minot State University graduate. She coached at Mayville-Portland High School and led the Patriots to a girls’ basketball state championship in 1975 when she was honored as NDHSCA Class B Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year. NDHSCA also recognized Sheryl with its NDHSCA Award of Merit in 1986. In 2000 she was inducted into North Dakota Officials Asso-ciation Hall of Fame. She received the USA Volley-ball Meritorious Service Award in 1994, 2002 and 2004. Sheryl was recognized in March, 2012 with the NDHSAA Distinguished Service Award.

Well guys, here's some news you probably were-n't expecting, and frankly, neither was I. Everything's still good to go for the Shrine Bowl; you will report for practice on July 9 and the games will be at 4:00 (11-man) and 7:00 (9-man) on July 14 at Fargo Shanley High School (field turf). However, the camp site for all four teams has moved to Mayville State University.

This is a result of action taken in January when the NCAA passed a new by-law which no longer al-lows all-star teams in football or basketball to be housed or to practice on Division I campuses. Basi-cally this is in response to illegal recruiting that has become an issue. Our Shrine football committees were notified about this in mid-February, and they have been working overtime and scrambling ever since to either get a waiver from the NCAA (no luck) or find an alternate site.

Because of Mayville State's proximity, midway between the Kem and El Zagal Shrine temples, the decision was made to move the whole operation to that campus. It will be different and will take some flexibility and growing pains, but we have been as-sured that it will be very workable and a good experi-ence for all concerned. Mayville State University will have three lined practice fields prepared, so no team will be practicing on the same field as the opposing team.

Separate locker rooms for east and west teams will be set up as well. The resident housing to be used has been recently updated. The rooms and building is air-conditioned, is arranged in suites, and is very attractive and practical.

Teams will eat together in the dining hall, and the trip to the hospital will be taken together as usual. Players will check-out of the dorms on Saturday morning, and the banquet will be held in Fargo. The games will be televised from Shanley. The Shriners plan to have some community events in Mayville, and there is great potential for this to be a wonderful experience. We've always stressed how the Shrine Bowl experience was bigger than a football game. The players and coaches from all four teams being together should prove to be just that.

The Shrine committees, as well as myself, will be meeting with the MSU administration extensively in the coming weeks. I will update you as I receive additional information. The NDHSCA and the football committees from the Kem and El Zagal Shrine Tem-ples look forward to making this work, and are count-ing on coaches and athletes for cooperation. The folks at MSU are very excited to host the Shrine Bowl teams, and Shriners expect that they will do a great job. They will be making a statewide press release.

Included with this release are the names of players who have been selected to partici-pate in the 2012 Shrine Bowl, to be played at Fargo Shanley on July 14. In addition to these players, three players from the Kem and El Zagal Shrine areas of Northwest Minnesota will be added to each team. Their names will be released in late March.

Two games are scheduled with an East-West format, the 11 man game at 4:00 and the 9 man game at 7:00. Players will report for practice on July 9. 2012 marks the 39th annual Shrine Bowl.

The North Dakota High School Coaches Association has decided to provide a “Gelaine Orvik Scholar-ship.” The idea of this scholarship was brought to the NDHSCA Executive Board at the 2008 State Convention by Joe Howell. Gelaine Orvik is known as the Executive Secretary of the NDHSCA. He has also held this position on the National level. Gelaine has touched thousands of lives through his tireless effort and enthusiasm not only for we the coaches, but more importantly for student athletes. He is an outstanding role model, mentor, coach, teacher, person, and friend.

This scholarship will commemorate what Mr. Orvik has long stood for, helping students through scholarship. We would like to establish this fund so it will last a long time. In order to do this we are ask-ing for donations. Any donation, no matter how big or small will assist us in accomplishing this goal.

Ms. Solberg was an Original Member of the National Federation Spirit Rules Committee and also served as Sec-tion V representative when the committee formed. She served as Section V Volleyball Rules Committee Section V representative as well as the committee’s chairperson. Sheryl served on the National Federation Hall of Fame Screening Committee and Gender and Ethnic Equity Com-mittee that she chaired. She was recognized by the National Federation with its Interscholastic Officials Association Sec-tion 5 Contributor Award in 1992 and National Citation Award in 2007.

NDHSCA Victory Milestones Please help the NDHSCA keep your records current. Each coach must send their record at the comple-tion of each season. If coaching more than one sport, complete each sport on a separate form. If you are completing the victory milestone for the first time, make sure to give your record for each year. Report only the highest level of coaching each season. Don't add coaching seasons together (ex. if a coach is coaching both jr. high boys basketball and varsity basketball, count only the varsity basketball record for that season). If coaching both varsity girls' and varsity boys' basketball, count each season

on separate forms and don't add together as one record. Under the new format for counting victories in certain sports such as track and field, cross country, tennis, golf, swimming, and gymnastics; the old records will need to be updated. Remember to keep each sport season separate and al-ways report the highest level of coaching in each sport. Mail completed form/s to: Gelaine Orvik; 3457 - 26th Avenue South; Fargo, ND 58103. Awards will be sent upon request after records are updated.

Procedure For Determining Won/Loss Records In An Invitational Meet: A. In an invitational meet, the teams that finish below you will count as victories, those that finish above you are losses. Any teams that you tie

will count as a win. B. Figure out the total number of teams you have competed against and what percentage of those teams were wins and losses. C. Take the percentage of wins/losses from above and multiply it against the number of meets you participated in to arrive at your won/loss re-

cord for the season. D. If this is not a whole number, victories will always be rounded down and losses will be rounded up. (Obviously, if your team has participated

in ten meets during the year, your wins plus losses should equal ten.)

Only meets in which three or more schools participate will count as an invitational.

Schools can still have a dual meet record that would remain the same along with a record for the invitationals they attend.

It will be up to the individual coaches to determine their records from past years

and update wins or revise their victory milestone forms.

Lifetime Membership Application

To purchase a Lifetime Membership the prospective coach must have been:

An NDHSCA Member for 20 years.

An active high school coach for at least 25 years either in North Dakota or another state.

Lifetime Membership may be purchased for a one‑time fee of $300.

Such Lifetime Membership will carry all Active Membership benefits (including $1,000,000 Liability

Insurance coverage, effective with 2009-2010 Membership Year).

A Lifetime Member relinquishes voting and office holding privileges if a member is no longer an active coach.

The North Dakota High School Coaches Association is a non-profit organization that is concerned with sup-porting athletic programs which benefit the youth of North Dakota.

The NDHSCA is an organization that offers programs to help coaches keep in touch with new develop-ments in athletics and coaching as well as attempting to maintain and improve athletic programs in North Dakota. Financial help is needed to support the award programs, the state convention, and the various all-state contests sponsored by the NDHSCA.

All sponsor members receive a plaque from the NDHSCA to show its appreciation as well as being listed on the sponsor page in the Dakota Coach.
