Dear Friends,

We are proud to share Dance Place’s 2012-2013 Annual Report with you. Our 32nd Season was a monumental year for the

organization, with expanded programming, stronger organizational capacity, planning for the future, fundraising for our capital campaign and sustaining general operations.

Our program expansion included increasing our presentations of international artists, participating in the National Performance Network’s Performing Americas Project and launching our Art on 8th initiative here in Brookland. Art on 8th programs anchored the new Monroe Street Market Arts Plaza, featuring free music and dance events. We opened our gallery/workshop space, “Studio 21” on the Arts Walk at Monroe Street Market, which offers monthly visual art exhibits and free arts workshops every Saturday for people of all ages.

Every day adults and children enjoyed dancing in our studios with a wide range of dance forms taught by our professional staff and accompanied by our fantastic musicians.

Dance Place continues to serve as a home for resident companies, ReVision dance company, Coyaba Dance Theater, the Dance Place Step Team and a new intergenerational company, POP (People Objects Play). Our new Artists in Residency program gave ClancyWorks Dance Company, DC Casineros and Culture Shock DC opportunities for teaching, rehearsing and performing.

Dance Place offers prolific programming to young people that inspires them to grow to new heights. Our performing arts classes, self-development programs, academic enrichment, employment opportunities and career planning serve children, teens and young adults. The mix of artists, young people, families, students and community members within a caring, creative community is at the heart of who we are.

We strive to make our city and neighborhood a better place to live through inclusive, creative programming. Dance Place continues to build strong partnerships that represent diverse interests by listening and responding to the needs of our community. The construction and expansion of our beloved facility began in August 2013 and we look forward to having you join us for our first programs in the new Dance Place in Summer 2014, followed by a Grand Opening in September 2014.

Thank you for playing an essential role in Dance Place’s history, present and future.

Gracefully yours,

Carla Perlo Deborah RileyFounding Director Director

The 2013 Summer Camp Show, “Dance Place Through the Ages,” paid homage to Dance Place’s 32-year history as an arts center and 27-year history in Brookland. Fittingly, it was the last show to ever be performed in the Dance Place Theater before renovations.

• 500 adult and youth dance students participated each month in a wide variety of classes for beginners and professionals, including Hip-Hop, Step, African, Modern, Jazz, Ballet, Tap and Salsa.

• 546 students at 20 schools and community centers throughout the DC Metropolitan area were provided with dance instruction through Dance Place’s OutReach program.

• 16 emerging arts administrators, teachers, theater technicians and dancers received mentorship, on-the-job training, free dance classes and housing as part of Dance Place’s Internship program.

Energizers Youth Enrichment Programs• 630 hours of enrichment programming including creative education, life skills, dance classes and homework help were offered to youth in our Energizers Afterschool Club. Every Monday-Friday, late August to early June, Dance Place hosted 25 children ages 5-12 in our dedicated Creative Education Center.

• 58 teenagers were hosted on-site three days a week through the Energizers Junior Staff program for life skills, job training and arts electives. Teens were paid a stipend for their job shifts, which included working as front-of-house staff, backstage crew, teaching assistants, office aides and Art on 8th hosts.

• 7- week Energizers Creative Arts Camp hosted the largest-ever enrollment of 50 campers ages 5-13 along with 30 Junior Staff. Participants were engaged in dance classes, music, arts and crafts, life skills, academic enrichment, field trips and all performed on stage in the culminating Summer Camp Shows.
