I began the final portion of class with the idea of implementing a variation of a helix into our installation. I toyed around with the tooth-pick model that I had made and tried to figure out what purpose it could have in a real environment. I finally decided it would be best used as a pathway leading into a new setting.

My initial design had the helix standing up and leading into a confined space. The intention was for the helix to draw the publics eye and direct them into the enclosed space.

This was the space we were assigned to build on. This area exists in a very conflicting environment. The space itself is mainly trees, plants and dirt. To the left and behind there is a road, straight ahead is a soccor field, and to the right is Batmale hall. My main goal was to find a way to have the viewer focus on my model and not be distracted by the surroundings. The space was also quite fulnerable to wind.

After learning about the space that I needed to occupy, the first alterations I made to my design enhanced the connection of the helix to the enclosed space and added sking to the vertical poles as a means of blocking the wind.

I was partnered with another student whose design also reflected the need to redirect the wind.

The most difficult aspect of this project was constructing my model at full scale. My miniature was made with toothpicks and glue and I had to figure out a way to make it ten times bigger.

I ended up using pvc pipes and screws. I chose pvc because it was cheap and light. I would have liked to use bamboo and rope but didn't have the time or money to do so.

The pvc design didn't work as I had planned. It became too heavy and was not able to support itself in an upright position. Alterations to our design needed to reflect this change.

Although the final build of our model had changed from its' initial design it still accomplished our desired goal by creating a space that invites and intrigues and provides protection from the harsh wind.

During the presentation people were naturally attracted to our work. Without any guidance people sensed the safety and power of our work and gathered in our shelter.

This was a challenging and rewarding experience. I learned a great deal about craftsmanship and expressing my thoughts through design. This experience will help me become more proficient in my work.
