FROM THE CENTER SEAT
The year began with our annual turn in to the Ronald McDonald House of the tabs we collected
the previous year. In 2017 we collected 127,000 tabs weighing in at a whopping 88 pounds! The
day began at 8:30 AM where we had our traditional pre tab turn-in breakfast at Golden Corral.
We had a fairly decent turn out as 12 DaVinci personnel braved the very cold morning to feast on
the wonderful breakfast offerings at Golden Corral. A few of us came in uniform, some in their
DaVinci apparel, and some dressed for the cold. One even came as our favorite mascot Porthos.
Following breakfast we adjourned to the Ronald McDonald House for the official turn-in. After
all the photos were taken and the tabs weighed folks went back to their warm homes.
Normally later that afternoon we would have the Pie Party but two reasons called for a
postponement: first with Martha falling and breaking her hit, Jeff would not be able to make the
afternoon Pie Party. Since he was our top “tabber” and gets to toss a couple pies it only made
sense to move the Pie Party to later in the year. Second, was because it was just too dang cold!
Usually the weather cooperates but again this year it was just too cold and I did not wish to have
Cool-Whip freeze to my face! Last year we held the Pie Party in April which will probably be the
timeframe for the Pie Party this year. Oh, if you did not know, four folks qualified to toss a pie
for reaching a minimum of 5,000 donated tabs. They are (and who they get to pie): Jeff with a
donation of 16,000 tabs gets to pie me and Joe; Connie with her total of 8,288 tabs gets to pie
(sigh) me; and Russell reaching 5,000 tabs on the nose gets to pie Joe.
The Party will be quite a lot of fun with pizza for all and a million laughs so keep your station
tuned to this channel for updates as the New Year progresses! Until then check out the photos
below from the 2018 tab turn-in.
Hitting the buffet at Golden Corral are Jeff and Randy.
Joe and Lisa also fill their plates at the buffet.
Sandye fills her plate while Joe carefully makes sure Lisa does not take all the mushrooms!
Humm, a house divided? Sandye and Randy enjoy their meals and so too do Jeff and Joe.
Steve and Lisa also enjoy their meals and Freddy and Connie pose for a photo.
Gregory and Todd at the table and arriving a bit late are Sandra and Porthos (Wilbert)!
Porthos shows a few of the tabs donated in 2017 and the scale showing 88 pounds of tabs!
The DaVinci crew at the 2018 tab turn-in (L-R: Lisa, Freddy, Jeff, Connie, Todd
Porthos, Gregory, Steve, Joe, and Sandra).
Just a few days following the tab turn-in the DaVinci held its monthly Night Out/Membership
Meeting at Peluso’s in the Milgen Road shopping complex. The Last time we held Night Out at
Peluso’s we had a pretty good turnout and this year was no exception! The lure of all-you-can-eat
pasta was just too tempting for the 11 crewmembers that came to the Night Out. The food was
very good, our server, Katie, did a great job, and the atmosphere was festive. You can tell the
Klingons were in the house as the kitchen nearly ran out of pasta, but that is a story best told at a
later date! As the evening was winding down, we had our usual drawing for the free meal and the
lucky winner was our newest member Steve Cushing!
I brought a couple of Captain’s Perks to give out – three issues of the magazine “Star Trek”, one
discussing time travel episodes and the other featured Data on the cover and talked about the
episode “Measure of a Man” (one of the best TNG episodes and one of my personal favorites).
When I mentioned Data was on the cover and it was shown to the assembled crew, Sandra nearly
jumped out of here chair to steal them from my grasp as she is a HUGE Data fan. As I reached in
to pull out a name you could see the “Oh Lord, please let it be me” look on her face. You could
see the look of disappointment on her face as I read the name of the first winner. The winner of
two of the three magazines was Steve who won for the second time that evening! I had one more
copy of “Star Trek” to give away and just so happen to be a duplicate of the Data issue. I drew a
name and unfortunately it was not Sandra’s name on the ticket but, the Lord must have heard her
pleas because her son Wilbert won! As it quickly went from Wilbert’s hand to Sandra’s and the
subsequent cooing that was heard, everyone knew who had really won!
Russell donated a really nice door prize but I decided to hold off on giving that one away until a
future DaVinci gathering. The next Night Out/Membership meeting will be held on 19 February
at a DaVinci favorite, New China – the best Chinese buffet in Columbus. Make sure you mark
your calendars for this one as the food is great and the attendance will be high.
A BIG Bajoran thanks to all who attended and check out some of the photos below from all the
fun.
Waiting to order are Josh and Jeanne and Russell and Diane.
Also waiting are Joe and Steve and Freddy and Lisa.
Not to forget Todd and David and Wilbert and Sandra.
As our server, Katie, takes food orders from Diane and David, Russell cannot believe the amount
of food on the “Peluso’s Pasta Platter”!
Look what we won: Steve (free meal and “Star Trek” magazines) and Wilbert (Star Trek magazine)
Gregory, arriving very late (could not get off work in time) and the DaVinci crew at Peluso’s!
On 21 January a hearty group of 7 DaVinci personnel (2 others drove directly to the museum)
met at my house at 7:30 AM for our once postponed trip to the Aviation Museum in Warner
Robins! And what a great trip it was! We left my house in two cars around 7:45 AM and because
of misdirection from my GPS we did not arrive at the museum until 9:30 AM. Once we did
arrive, Bill was waiting for us at the front entrance. We stood around in the lobby waiting for the
last group of DaVinci personnel to arrive (Leiko and her dad drove from their home to the
museum).
Once everyone had arrived, Bill began his tour by taking us into the Flying Tigers display. From
there he took us through World War II and into the Korean conflict, the Cold War, and beyond.
There were dozens and dozens of different kinds of aircraft on display from a Piper Cub used
during WWII as a reconnaissance aircraft to a P-51 Mustang to a B-1 bomber to a Saber jet, to a
Soviet made MIG, to a B-52, to the F-15 and F-16, to the fastest air breathing plane ever built the
SR-71 Blackbird and everything in between! Oh yes, let us not forget the variety of helicopters
on display. The only thing the Aviation Museum is lacking is a Space Shuttle! Even with Bill
pushing us through at a steady pace, we did not get to see everything (we did, however, get to see
2 different atomic bombs!). Many of the smaller displays had to be put aside so that we could get
as much out of the tour as possible before we had to leave for the cookout at Bill and Barbara’s
house.
We followed Bill to his house and we were not only met by Barbara but a feast any decent
Klingon would appreciate! There were hotdogs, hamburgers, potato salad, baked beans, cole
slaw, and a garden salad! Plus, drinks were provided. You could tell this was a hungry group as
there was not much left over after the crew dug in. Once everyone had had their fill and the
conversations dwindled down, it was time to call it a day. We were given directions by Bill to
make sure we found our way home. His directions were perfect and we arrived back at my place
safe and sound and all for the better for having gone on this great away mission.
A BIG Bajoran thanks to Bill for the wonderful tour and to Bill and Barbara for hosting the
cookout at their house. Check out the photos from all the fun!
Bill meets us at the main entrance and then gives the group an introduction to the museum.
First stop is the 14th
Air Force or also known as the Flying Tigers.
Bill talks about more WWII aircraft and Captain John Birch from whom the John Birch Society
got its name.
Off to the museum’s Korean War section and Bill discusses the F-84E “Thunderjet”
The P-51 “Mustang” and Bill discusses the role of women in uniform during WWII.
The museum’s collection of plane art work salvaged from discarded aircraft.
The group listens to Bill discuss electronic warfare and the checking out more of the museum’s
aircraft.
The F-105D “Thunderchief” and Bill talks about Viet Nam era jets.
Bill discusses the massive engines of the SR-71 “Blackbird” and one of the atomic bombs.
Just a few of the aircraft on display at the museum.
More of the numerous aircraft on display!
Even more aircraft and the group looks down at the display floor at the Lego robot competition
being held at the museum.
The fastest air breathing jet in the world (and the coolest) – the SR-71 “Blackbird”.
More photos of the SR-71 – the coolest jet ever!
The group stands underneath a bomber and then poses for a photo with another atomic bomb.
2.65
The museum also honors Georgia aviators and has an aviation Hall of Fame and the crew
checking out more WWII exhibits.
Joe checks out the B-25 “Mitchell” and Bill shows the group a presidential helicopter.
Yep! There are aircraft outside as well!
A final group photo at the museum and then off to Bill and Barbara’s for food and fun!
Sandra and Todd get something to drink while waiting for the hamburgers and hotdogs.
Freddy poses for a photo and while Charles looks on Leiko and Barbara show off their
owl and wolf backpacks.
The hungry crew digs in (L-R): Leiko, Gregory, Joe, and Lisa and Joe helps himself to potato
salad while Gregory waits his turn.
Chowing down in the living room are Sandra, Barbara, and Lisa and in the kitchen are Todd
Joe, Charles, Leiko, and Bill.
Our wonderful and gracious hosts, Bill and Barbara Paul!
Okay folks, I realize that the above article on our away mission to the Museum of Aviation in
Warner Robins contained just a few photos but…well, you should have been there! Again, a BIG
Bajoran thanks to all who attended and to Bill and Barbara for their unsurpassed hospitality!
Until the next time - engage!

PASSAGES
StarTrek.com is saddened to report the untimely passing of Star Trek: The Next Generation
actor Jon Paul Steuer, who died on New Year’s Day at the age of 33. Steuer originated the role of
Alexander Rozhenko, Worf’s son with K’Ehleyr, in the episode “Reunion.” For the remainder of
the episodes on TNG featuring Rozhenko, he would instead be played by Family Ties star Brian
Bonsall. Jonathan Frakes mentioned that Steuer "was too shy, not a warrior. This may have been
the reason why he was not recast".
Paul Steuer as Alexander on Strat Trek: The Next Generation
Born as Jon Paul Steuer in Escondido, California, his acting career lasted for less than a decade.
In 1989 he worked on an episode of Day by Day. He appeared in the 1991 film Late For Dinner
with Tim Kelleher and Jeremy Roberts. That same year, he guest-starred in an episode of the
drama series Homefront, playing the younger version of Ken Jenkins' character; Sterling Macer,
Jr. was also a regular on this series.
In 1993, Steuer had a supporting role in the CBS television movie When Love Kills: The
Seduction of John Hearn, opposite Gregg Henry. He then played Johnny Vennaro in the 1994
family sports comedy Little Giants, which co-starred Rickey D'Shon Collins, Mark Holton,
Courtney Peldon and Susanna Thompson.
Steuer acquired his most recognition as an actor for playing Quentin Kelly on the situation
comedy series Grace Under Fire. During his time on this series, Steuer worked with such Star
Trek alumni as Rickey D'Shon Collins, Paul Dooley, Monte Markham, Penny Johnson, Cristine
Rose, Heidi Swedberg, and Ken Thorley. According to the E! True Hollywood Story about the
show, Steuer was afraid of his TV mother, played by Brett Butler. Steuer left Grace Under Fire in
1996 and never acted again. For his work on Grace Under Fire, he received a Young Artist
Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor Under Ten in a TV Series in 1995.
Steuer moved to Denver in 2003, where he formed the band called the Soda Pop Kids. In 2013,
the group relocated to Portland, where he became known locally as Jonny P. Jewels. When the
Soda Pop Kids disbanded in 2009, he went on to play with other projects, and was with the punk
band P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S. prior to his death. In 2015, Steuer opened a vegan restaurant in Northeast
Portland called Harvest at the Bindery. He also performed as a DJ around Portland.
The cause of death was not immediately confirmed. Thanks to StarTrek.com for the
information.
StarTrek.com is saddened to report the passing of veteran actor and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
guest star Jack Blessing, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer on November 14 at the age of 66,
though news of his death has just been announced. Blessing played Dulmur, a particularly
humorless Department of Temporal Investigations agent, in the DS9 episode "Trials and Tribble-
ations.”
Blessing as Department of Temporal Investigations agent Dulmur.
Blessing, who was born and raised in Baltimore, kicked off his career with the Boston-based
improv company, The Proposition. Upon relocating to Los Angeles, he embarked on a long and
fruitful career in film and television. Among his many credits were Heaven’s Gate, Family Ties,
Moonlighting, The Golden Girls, The Naked Truth, Murder One, Profiler, The X-Files, George
Lopez, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Mike & Molly. He also did voiceover
work for countless projects, including games, shows and movies spanning from Rambling Rose,
The Chronicles of Riddick, Shrek Forever After and Bee Movie to Megamind, ParaNorman. The
Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I and II, and the Chris Pine drama, Hell or High Water.
According to Deadline.com,
Blessing is survived by his wife, Lora Staley Blessing, and their sons Ian and Christopher.
Thanks to StarTrek.com for the information.
Bruce Gray, the actor who played Admiral Chekote in the Deep Space Nine episode "The
Circle" and the Next Generation episode "Gambit, Part I" and later played Surak in the Star Trek:
Enterprise episode "Awakening" has died. He was 81.
Bruce Gray as ADM Chekote on Deep Space Nine and as Surak on Enterprise.
Beyond the realm of Star Trek, Gray had recurring roles on Babylon 5 and the American version
of Queer as Folk. He also played the hopelessly WASP father of the groom in the 2002 comedy
My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Sky Marshal Dienes in the science fiction film Starship Troopers
(which starred Dina Meyer). In 2008 he made a brief appearance on Boston Legal, the ABC
drama starring William Shatner and John Larroquette. Thanks to Memory Alpha for the
information.

STARFLEET MARINES
Greetings Marines!
Last month’s meeting and night out was rather short, but the two Marine that showed up ate like
true Klingons as we both ordered the all you could eat pasta. If you didn’t come for the night out
you missed some really great food.
On a disappointing note, Freddy informed us that our ship will not have a recruiting table at the
Columbus Toy and Comic Book show this month. I was really disappointed in that a couple of us
now have our uniforms and won’t get to wear them as soon as we thought. On the other hand it
will be a good opportunity to get our uniforms in proper order. I am still trying to get a hold of
the Quartermaster so that we can find out what and how to acquire everything we need for our
uniforms.
I have been reviewing the qualifications we need to have to acquire MURP. If you don’t know
what MURP is you can get more info by going to http://sfmca.sfi-sfmc.org/murp/ . It looks like
it’s going to take a little work to acquire this, but our fellow shipmates on the DaVinci can help
us. Don’t let it discourage you though, because not many units have the privilege of saying that
obtained this honor and there are bragging rights that come along with this. If you want our unit
to stand out then this is the way to do it. I encourage everyone who is a Marine and NOT a
Marine to look it over. More information on our first steps to tackling this will come soon.
Until next time, Ooh Rah!
