The Continuing Education Program at the Delaware College of Art and Design invites you to join a community of aspiring and professional artists and designers who are committed to creativity and exploration. Classes and workshops are open to the community – everyone is welcome! Most classes are conducted in the evenings and on the weekends and are non-degree, part-time courses of study. Classes and workshops range from one to 12 class meetings.

The Continuing Education Program at DCAD is dedicated to providing the community with dynamic courses that foster personal and professional growth. DCAD delivers challenging and inspiring courses in downtown Wilmington. These small classes – conducted by an engaging faculty of working artists and design professionals – focus on your individual success.

In addition to a wide selection of classes, DCAD’s Continuing Education Program also offers Certificate Programs. These programs provide students with the opportunity to accelerate their careers and artistic abilities through focused, compact courses that develop creative and technical skills while progressing through the prescribed curricula in Web and Graphic Design, Art and Design, Interior Design or Photography.

No application is required for Continuing Education classes – just register! The course will begin with an overview of Muse and then students will quickly begin building a complete website with functional navigation, a Google map, a contact form, an image gallery, and employ some of the new web fonts available from the Adobe Edge Web Fonts. Students will learn to prepare and import graphics and create an HTML5 animated motion graphics presentation, as might be used for the introduction for a website. Students will also create a Flash animated banner ad, with attention to typical requirements for commercial banner ad placement. The course includes an overview of HTML5 animation options for publishing to various platforms, including the iPad and other mobile devices, and the changing role of Flash (still the required platform for most animated banner ads and also a surprisingly effective tool for making animated GIFs).

SUSAN BENARCIKMFA, Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills; BFA, Rosemont College, Rosemont. Susan Benarcik is an installation artist and surface designer. Deeply rooted in horticulture and design, her concern for the environment is made evident in her 3-dimensional sculptural installations and surface designs. Her compositions provoke the viewer to observe and reflect on human experiences including individual, social, and environmental. Part printmaker and part sculptor, Benarcik takes elemental forms of the natural and man-made world into her studio and carefully transforms them by stacking, stringing, layering, knotting, and weaving them into dimensional sculpture for public and private spaces. www.susanbenarcik.com

RAYMOND BROWNRaymond has had a lifelong involvement in visual art including: teaching, drawing, painting, printmaking, portraiture, storyboarding for animation and live-action production, logo design, and computer graphics imaging. Teaching experience includes instruction of drawing and painting at the Arts Council of Princeton and storyboarding at the Otis College of Art and Design.

ELLEN DURKANMFA, Towson University; BFA, Corcoran College of Art + Design; AFA, Delaware College of Art and Design. Ellen is currently working on a body of forged metal wearable pieces. These garments have a performance aspect as they immobilize the female figure, yet the hammered steel framework offers a seductive quality, as it stands alone without a figure inside.

NANCI HERSH MFA in Printmaking, University of Hawaii at Manoa; BFA in Drawing, Pratt Institute. Nanci Hersh is a mixed media artist whose work has been exhibited abroad in Japan, Australia, and Estonia. Throughout the United States her work has been shown in multiple exhibitions, including The Demoiselles Revisited at Francis M. Naumann Fine Art, New York, As She Sees It: 8 Artists at the Pierro Gallery of South Orange, New Jersey, Iron Works, curated by John Goodyear, and the 43rd Annual National Print Exhibition at the Hunterdon Museum in New Jersey with her print, Women’s Work, selected for the invitation. Hersh’s print Birdbath, is included in The Best of Printmaking: An International Collection selected by Lynne Anne and Phyllis McGibbon and published by Rockport Publishers, Inc. 1997. www.nancihersh.com

HAROLD KALMUSBFA, Sculpture, Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts). Harold has taught at Drexel University, the University of the Arts and the Art Institute of Philadelphia, including courses in sculpture, 3D digital illustration and animation. His sculpture work focuses on the figure and has been shown in various exhibits in the region.

AMANDA KAMENMFA, University of Delaware; BFA, The College of New Jersey. Amanda has taught drawing and painting courses at Delaware College of Art and Design, University of Delaware, Delaware Art Museum, Washington College and Cecil College. Her drawings have been selected by The Viewing Program at The Drawing Center, NYC. Recent exhibitions include Annual Members Juried Exhibition, Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, RSVP 2011, National Juried Exhibition, NWAA, and Drawing on Experience, Woman Made Gallery.

TORREY S. KISTMFA, Savannah College of Art & Design; BA in Visual Arts, Gettysburg College. Torrey is a large-scale abstract painter and multi-media artist. Her work ranges from edgy, colorful mixed media paintings to avant-garde installations. RICK PHILLIPSArt Institute, Pittsburgh. Hailing from the Susquehanna Valley in Pennsylvania, Rick Phillips now calls Claymont, Delaware his home. After graduating with honors from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and studying under renowned artists Henry Koerner and Flavia Zortea, Rick joined the advertising firm of Depersico Design as an illustrator where he worked for more than 10 years. In 1998, he co-founded the graphic design and marketing firm of Phillips Saddler Creative. He is an active member of The Philadelphia Sketch Club and the Delaware Foundation for the Visual Arts. In 2012 Rick founded the Darley Arts Center, a gallery for visual artists and a center for Art Education and workshops. PAT ROSENBERGERPat Rosenberger has been an exhibiting artist for more than 20 years. Her imagination for her jewelry is sparked by her experiences; using silversmithing techniques Pat currently works in silver, copper and brass. She has taught adult classes at various institutions including the Stifel Fine Arts Center, The Steubenville Center for Arts and Jefferson Community College.

PATRICIA WHITMANAbout six years ago, Patricia discovered and fell in love with the techniques and weaves of the ancient art of chain maille. She enjoys exploring new ways to make chain maille jewelry as well as hand-knotting classic pearls. Patricia has been teaching workshops at DCAD for several years and sells her jewelry at fine crafts shows.

The only tools needed to do chain maille are a pair of chain nose pliers. Pairs of pliers will be available for use during the class if needed. KATHLEEN BUCKALEWMFA, George Washington University; BA, University of Delaware. Photographer Kathleen Buckalew began her work as a photographer for the Design & Exhibition Department of the National Gallery of Art. She has won numerous awards for her work, including a fellowship from the Delaware Division of the Arts; a resident fellowship at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and was named the McKinstry Scholar by the Delaware Heritage Commission in 2005 for her continuing work on her project of documenting farmers in Delaware. Kathleen has exhibited her work across the U.S. In 2011, Ms. Buckalew was one of the artists included in the book, 100 Artists of the Brandywine Valley. She is a member of the Diamond State Branch of the National League of American Pen Women, the Delaware Press Association, Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, the Center for the Creative Arts, and is an active member of a group she co-founded, called the Brandywine Photo Collective.

DAVE NORBUTAFA, Delaware College of Art and Design. David Norbut is a portrait and music photographer with an intense passion for shooting street and documentary work. His photographs have been published in The Guardian, The New York Times, Huffington Post and have been exhibited in several galleries around the globe. David is drawn to capturing the raw beauty of the people he meets and the environments surrounding us. He is based in Wilmington, Delaware. www.davidnorbut.com

RANDLE REEDBFA, Pratt Institute. Randle has experienced the wide spectrum of trade that photography has to offer, from wedding photography to editorial print work. Randle has been teaching photography in DCAD’s Continuing Education program since 2009. He translates the adventure of creating an image to the classroom and the studio through a variety of experience-driven classes. He works as a freelance photographer and exhibits his fine art photography locally.

LEON SYFRITLeon Syfrit is a photographer who works in the Greater Philadelphia and tri-state area. Currently, Leon teaches photography and lectures at the Delaware College of Art and Design and assists a Philadelphia based, commercial/editorial photographer. Photography began as a hobby for Leon, and he eventually left his job at a local bank to formally pursue his interest in photography by enrolling at the Delaware College of Art and Design. After completing the Associate of Fine Arts program at DCAD, Leon went on to complete his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Leon’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia History Museum, The Free Library of Pennsylvania, and the University of Maryland hospital.

We will briefly explore the history of the cyanotype process, and view samples of successful cyanotype images before creating our own. Students will learn how to make a digital negative, examine several methods for applying the cyanotype emulsion on paper, and be introduced to the ultraviolet light box as a method of image exposure. This workshop will also introduce students to several household items that may be used to tone their finished cyanotype prints. No previous photographic knowledge is required for this workshop. Students will need to provide a picture to create their digital negative. The best approach will be to store an image on a flash drive or portable hard drive to bring to class. Students will learn how to apply the classic photographic principles of exposure, light and composition: elements that are important to any good photograph. After the shoot, you will learn how to process your images using select photo editing apps. Via numerous examples, photo assignments, field trips, and in-class critiques, you will be inspired to use this dynamic, new medium on a daily basis. This course is open to beginners as well as experienced photographers.

Resident students stay in the new residence hall at 707 N. King Street, which houses the 707 Café dining hall, both of which opened in Fall 2012. While each unit in 707 North King Street has unique features, all are studio-style, divided into two areas, offering separate bedroom space and studio work space. Each unit also contains a full bathroom, which features marble tile and countertops. A granite counter with working sink is also located within the unit. Within the 707 building, residents can find the Dining Hall on the first floor, lounge space, and a laundry facility. The dining area, or atrium, located in the main area of the building offers free WiFi and space for socializing as well as studying.

A Resident Assistant lives on each floor of each building. Knowledgeable about the College and community, they serve as role models, enforce community policies, provide advice and guidance, and organize activities. In addition a member of the Office of Student Services staff lives in the building as yet another resource for residents.

NON–CREDIT COURSES & TUITIONStudents who enroll in a Non-Credit Continuing Education course may request a Pass/Fail grade upon course completion. Students receive continuing education units (CEUS) upon successful completion of a class. CEUs are nationally-recognized units earned by participation in qualified Continuing Education Programs which document non-credit work completed. One CEU is awarded for every 10 hours of class participation. CEUs are not equivalent to college credits and no letter grade or official transcript is provided for non-credit coursework.

In such a case, the student is entitled to a full refund of tuition and fees. Students will be notified of cancellations or changes as soon as possible and given the option of enrolling in a different class or receiving a full refund. Refunds will be processed within two weeks of the cancellation or change.

WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDSWithdrawal from a Non-Credit course must be done in writing to the Director of Continuing Education. You may do so by email, fax or in person at the Delaware College of Art and Design. Lack of attendance, lack of course completion and/or notification to an instructor does not constitute withdrawal from a class. No registration fees will be refunded in the event of withdrawal.REFUND FOR SIX OR MORE CLASS SESSIONSIf written notice is received – Before the first class meeting: 100% refund of tuition.
