PREFACE
The De La Salle Hymnal is offered to the Catholicpublic in the sincere hope that it may be a valuable aid inreligious training. In these days of scientific education, it istrite to say that the outward expression of emotion is an effectivemeans of developing that very emotion. The rites and ceremoniesof Holy Mother Church have taught this truth from the begin-ning. It is, then, of great importance that the impression begood and the emotion noble. This Hymnal aims to secure bothresults. It has retained what was good in its predecessor, theCatholic Youth's Hymn Book, while studiously avoiding itsdefects.
i. The De La Salle Hymnal conforms to the MotuProprio of Pope Pius X on Church Music.
2. Every tune in the book is either of acknowledged worthas music or has long been associated with Catholic traditions inthis country.
3. The editorial file has been applied unsparingly to allthe vernacular verses, in order to secure both good English andconformity to the musical rhythm of the hymns.
4. Nearly all the hymns have been written for use byeither a unison or a four part chorus.
5. The harmonization, while in full accord with artisticstandards, is yet so simple as to fall within the limits of theaverage children's choir or school chorus.
6. The accompaniment has in every case been adapted tothe organ. Piano arrangements have been ruthlessly excluded.
7. The pitch of each hymn has been placed low enough tosuit the range of boys' voices and facilitate congregational singing.
To all who have in any way helped in the preparation ofthis book, cordial thanks are herewith extended; in particular, tothe Basilian Fathers of Toronto for permission to use numbers20, 40, and 215; to the Benedictine Fathers for permission toinclude hymns by members of their order; to Professor Joseph GMarcks for timely aid and for the use of his own compositions;
to Professor Wenzel A. Raboch both for careful revision of theharmonization of the entire book and for permission to includeseveral hymns and a Mass of his own composition; and toMessrs. J. Fischer & Brother for valuable suggestions, carefulsupervision of proof, and generous permission to use many oftheir copyrighted publications.
The Manuscripts of the De La Salle Hymnal were care-fully and critically read by a diocesan priest and a religiouspriest, both of acknowledged authority. We regret that neither,in his modesty, would permit the publication of his name. Thisbook shows the fruits of their generous labor, and to each ofthem we herewith offer our most sincere thanks.
The numbers contained in the Appendix, while not ChurchMusic in the proper sense of the term, have been included byrequest as being suitable for reunions of a more or less religiouscharacter.
The Index embodies the results of serious effort to tracewords and tunes to their source. In this respect the CatholicChurch Hymnal of J. Fischer & Brother and the WestminsterHymnal were both helpful. It is to be hoped that in a lateredition many of the present blanks may be filled.
As the singing of hymns is pre-eminently a religious act,the attention of young and the old is called to the Indulgencesannounced below. May all who use this book experience thehallowed emotions of St. Augustine as he listened to ChristianPsalmody, and strive to emulate the example of St. Philip Neriin promoting the effectiveness of Catholic Hymns.
New York, Feast of the Holy Rosary, 1913.
INDULGENCESPopes Pius VII and Pius IX, by rescripts dated respectively June, 1817,
and April, 1S58, have granted partial indulgences of one year and of onehundred days to all the faithful who sing hymns piously in a church ororatory, and to those who teach them so to sing, provided that these hymnsbe approved by ecclesiastical authority. A plenary indulgence may begained once a month on the ordinary conditions.
The De La Salle Hymnal has received the requisite approbation.

23 STABAT MATEREnglish Version
N? 1
At the cross her station keeping,Stood the mournful Mother weeping,Close to Jesus to the last;Through her heart, His sorrow sharing,All His bitter anguish bearing,Now at length the sword has passed.
6.
Those five wounds on Jesus smitten,Mother, in my heart be written,Deep as in thine own they be:Thou, my Saviour's cross who be^re^stThou, thy Son's rebuke who sharest,Let me share them both with thee.
Oh how sad and sore distressedWas that Mother, ever-blessedOf the Sole-begotten One!How she stood in desolation,Gazing at the desecrationOf her dying glorious Son!
Who could mark, from tears refraining,Christ's dear Mother uncomplaining,In so great a sorrow bowed?Who, unmoved, behold her languishUnderneath His cross of anguish,Mid the fierce, unpitying crowd?
In the passion of my Maker,Be my sinful soul partaker,Weep till death, and weep with tlMine with thee be that sad stati? There to watch the great salvatriWrought upon th' atoning tree.
Virgin thou of virgins fairest,May the bitter woe thou sharestMake on me impression deep:Thus Christ's dying may I carry
r.
With Him in His passion tarry,And His wounds in memory keep
4.
For His people's sins rejected,She, her Jesus, unprotected,Saw with thorns, with scourges rent,Saw her Son from judgment taken,Her Beloved in death forsaken,Till His spirit forth He sent.
5.
Fount of love and holy sorrow,Mother, may my spirit borrowSomewhat of thy woe profound;Unto Christ, with pure emotion,Raise my contrite hearts devotion,Love to read in every wound.
9.
May His wounds transfix me whollMay His cross and life-blood holyEbriate my heart and mind; Thus inflamed with pure affection,In the Virgin's Son protectionMay I at the judgment find.
10.
When in death my limbs are failing,Let Thy Mother's prayer prevailingLift me, Jesus, to Thy throne; To my parting soul be givenEntrance through the gate of HeaThere confess me for Thine own.
