Antonio Sebast ian Araneta , alumnus of De La Salle University and author of several works such as 1030 R. Hidalgo, Faith, healing and psychic history in the Philippines, and Inside the Cursillo among others, formally turned over his collection of rare books and replicas of works of Miguel Zaragosa (the great uncle of the donor who was a well-known painter and writer) to the De La Salle University Library on the 24th of November 2010.

Mr. Edwin P. Santiago, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Services and University Registrar, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the significant value the donation has added to the existing library collection, specifically in the fields of literature and history, considering that some of the titles are not available even in the National Library of the Philippines, and how such would

greatly contribute towards the attainment of the Library’s One Mil l ion-Book Project.

Mr. Araneta, on his remarks of circumstance, expressed his willingness to donate more materials that are still in their possession. He promised DLSU that he will convince some of his contemporaries to donate to the DLSU Library. Furthermore, he vowed to spearhead a project to put up a center in the Library where all

documents

abou t the d i ffe ren t cons t i tu t iona l assemblies are housed.

Br. Narciso S. Erguiza FSC, DLSU President, delivered the response to Mr. Araneta’s remarks and enthusiastically thanked the Aranetas for the valuable donation of print and non-print materials. Together with him were Br. Ricardo P. Laguda FSC, Chancellor, and Dr. Myrna S. Austria, Vice Chancellor for Academics and Research.

Also present during the ceremony were Mrs. Gina Barte-Araneta, the donor’s wife together with some of their

close friends Mr. Roger and Mrs. Fe Mangahas and Ms. Marissa Recto, personal friends of the Aranetas, Nick Legaspi and Joseph Garcia (Nat ional Museum), Othel lo Marfil, Teresita Pagulayan and

Rafael Concepcion (PAMI), Dee Mandigma and Lawrence Gonzales (NCCA).

Thanksgiving is about “giving” or sharing as much as it is about “giving thanks.” Thus, the American Resource Studies Center (ASRC) prepared goodies (consisting of chocolates and candies) bundled in colored plastic wrappers as a Thanksgiving gift to students, staff and visitors who passed by the library lobby to commemorate Thanksgiving Day which fell on the 25th of November.

A weeklong exhibit on the same theme was also installed at the library lobby f rom November 22 unt i l

November 26. The exhibit featured Thanksgiving origin and traditions. Photos of roast turkeys, pumpkin pies and families gathered around the table for a holiday meal which generally underscores what the occasion is all about. Also featured in the paper show were jokes and bible quotes about Thanksgiving which certainly added flavor to it. To complement the exhibit was a video show on the topic that was continuously played for the library goers to watch at their desired time. Thus, apart from commemorating Thanksgiving, the exhibit also served as information outpost to those who are interested to know more on how and why Thanksgiving is celebrated.

Thanksgiving, which was first celebrated back in 1621 by English settlers of the Plymouth colony as a harvest festival, has been a beloved national holiday of the Americans. Each year, the 4th Thursday of November is designated as Thanksgiving Day, a time for families to come together to thank the

Almighty God for all His blessings and favors.

In partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and National Committee on Library and Information Services (NCLIS), the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. (PLAI) sponsored a national congress entitled The International Librarianship: a Path Ahead. The Congress was a treat to all the participants right from the start, where they became engrossed with the opening ceremonies and cultural presentations of Cebu University dance troupe. It was somehow reminiscent of librarians’ licensure oath taking days bringing to a few a feeling of déjà vu.

Among the papers presented were: “Global Librarianship: Issues and Trends in the Philippine Experience”, which proved that Philippine librarianship going global is not a new phenomenon. This was supported by records and history that show how Philippine librarians have gone international and have undergone cooperation with other libraries and institutions abroad. Another paper “IFLA: Global Voice of the Library and Information Profession” presented how IFLA works, operates and helps other library institutions in order to keep pace with technology of today and comply with library standards. “Legal Issues Affecting Philippine Librarianship” as well as “Legal Issues Affecting Global/International Librarianship” discussed the current provisions on Philippine librarianship and legal issues concerning the librarians who are legally fit to take the board exams, and the issues of globalization, legal systems, information consumers, global public policy, copyright and intellectual property, publishing, free movement of information and global librarians. The paper on “Partnership in Professional Development for Librarians” talked about the partnerships for development

among professional librarians and programs being offered by the Mortension Center for International Library Program, USA such as the lecture series, associates’, visitors and partnership program. “Library Extension Program: Philippine Experience” presented the extension services of the National Library like the library hub being installed in communities. The talk on “The International Cooperation of Librarians and Libraries: Networking in Time of Globalization” discussed the meaning, importance, benefits and risks of networking and its geographical aspects and forms. Among the most interesting papers were that of “Leveraging on the Collective Knowledge of the Library Community and Beyond: Collaborative Platforms at the National Library of Singapore” and “Newspaper SG: Global Access to an Online Archives of Singapore’s Newspaper,” which are about the involvement and participation of the Singapore community to the construction and implementation of new services being rendered to its users. Other interesting papers included “Reader Privacy: a Crucial Part of the Internet Manifesto” which talked about the issues currently being faced by the US,

the reader privacy; “Providing Access to Information: Rizal Library Experience” which discussed the initiatives of the library to provide access to information to different types of users; and “Philippine Librarianship: Roadmap in the Next Decade” which presented challenges and opportunities in library and information science, as well as the libraries’ present and prospective users, categories of competencies of professional librarians, policies standards and guidelines for BLIS and graduate education and the key result areas and key performance indicators and the proposed activities to deploy such.

The overall aspect of the congress from the presentations to the venue to the theme was great. The presentations gave insights on how librarians can make use of the available technology in rendering better service to users, and that the most important of all is that librarians first improve library services in the national level (through partnerships with other non-library institutions, having corporate social responsibility and injecting fresh ideas in the profession) before aspiring for international breakthroughs.

The DLSU Library hosted two exhibits sponsored by the Theology and Religious Education Department (TRED) of the University. These exhibits were put up by the TREDTRI Committee, headed by its coordinator, Mr. Christian Voltaire M. Metin, to celebrate the season of Advent, as well as the feast of the Immaculate Conception.

The first exhibit was entitled Hesus, Manunubos: Christology of Joey Velasco’s Paintings featuring several paintings of the late Joey Velasco, a multi-awarded Filipino religious artist. Among the most remarkable portraits in exhibit were: (1) Hapag ng Pag-asa, which presents a portrayal of the Last Supper, with 12 street children depicting the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ; (2) Atrofia, a portrait of an old man being embraced by Jesus Christ, which insinuates that we see Jesus in others who are in need; and, (3) Paleta de Sangre, a painting that shows Jesus Christ painting Joey Velasco, himself, allowing the viewers to see the similarity between the artist and Jesus-- that they are both artists, the

difference of which is that the artist’s works have emotions, while Jesus’ have souls. This exhibit ran from December 02 to 04. The second exhibit w a s e n t i t l e d M a r y i n the Four Gospels. This exhibit gave the viewers the opportunity to see the different images of the Virgin Mary in antique ivory statuettes, such as Mary as the Queen of the Holy Rosary, Matre Dolorosa, Our Lady of Penafrancia, up to Virgin Mary’s image as part of the Holy Family. Viewers feasted on different artistic images as a way of celebrating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, from December 06 to 10.

Both exhibits were put up at the Ground Floor Lobby of the University Library.
