Dear Parents,
In the next several weeks, Briar Woods High School will begin scheduling classes for the 2017-2018
school year. In preparation for that process, teachers will be asked to make recommendations for their
current students. I would like to explain the recommendation process and outline the options for your
student.
Students currently enrolled in Algebra 2 TRIG have the option of taking Math Analysis, Advanced
Algebra/Pre-Calculus, and/or one of several math electives the following year. As Algebra 2 TRIG
teachers, these are the indicators we consider when we make a course recommendation for your son or
daughter.
Math Analysis: student has regularly achieved a high Algebra 2 TRIG grade and has exhibited
signs of advanced proficiency algebra understanding
Advanced Algebra/Pre-Calculus: student has regularly achieved an average to high Algebra 2
grade and has exhibited signs of proficient algebra understanding
Math Electives:
Statistics/Discrete Math: each course is 1 semester and typically taken in
succession
Computer Math: a required prerequisite for AP Computer Science
Students currently enrolled in Pre-Calculus/Advanced Algebra typically take AP Calculus AB, Math
Analysis, or Statistics/Discrete Math the following year.
The Briar Woods math teachers will be making these recommendations shortly and they will be used by
the guidance department as they work with your son or daughter to create a schedule for the 2017-
2018 school year. If you have any questions you may contact me or the math department chairperson.
