So, then, why does Joseph believe this dream? Maybe it is because Joseph was a “son of David” … and what the angel does not mention – but what Joseph knows full well – is that Isaiah’s prophecy was intended directly and specifically for the “house of David.” The angel’s revelation is meant for him. And thanks to Joseph’s subsequent “obedience of faith,” the incarnate Christ Jesus genealogically was “descended from David.”

Isaiah 35:1-6,10 Psalm 146 James 5:7-10 Matthew 11:2-11

John the Baptist is in prison because his teaching constituted a threat to the religious and political powers in Judea. Being locked up in prison can do funny things to a person. You feel fenced in, lonely, depressed. You begin to doubt yourself. John the Baptist felt all this. His mission was to prepare the way for the Messiah. After many weeks in prison, he was anxious about the success of his mission. Had he done enough to bring about change? Was Jesus the one who would save his people, or did he have to wait for another? There are more people in prisons of their own making than there are in prisons built by local, state or federal governments. What prisons do we make for ourselves? A good place to start is the 7 Capital Sins: Pride, Envy, Sloth, Gluttony, Lust, Anger and Jealousy. We can add stress from work, family and peers; not to mention the anxiety of two weeks until Christmas and I have not done anything to prepare.

There is a story about a wealthy family who had one child, a little daughter, Jennifer, who was hospitalized shortly before December 25th and would not be able to go home for Christmas. Jennifer=s parents showered her with expensive gifts in an effort to cheer her up - stuffed animals, a doll house, computer games, you name it. The hospital room was transformed into a miniature ‘Toys-R-Us.’ Every time the parents visited Jennifer they brought gifts. But they were never able to stay long for they were always running off to some society function. One day, amidst all the fine gifts, Jennifer held on desperately to her mother as the mother gave Jennifer a kiss before trying to rush out to her next engagement. The mother tried to distract Jennifer by getting her interested in one of the toys. Through her

tears the little girl cried, AMommy I want you.@ Jennifer=s cry was a key that let her mother out of her self-made prison. When Christmas comes we should have something more to show for our running about from store to store than tired feet, unwrapped presents and regrets for cards not sent. If that happens then we are in prisons of our own making and are missing out on the wonderful season of Advent, a time to prepare for the Lord and give our attention to the Christ Child Who so yearns for our time and our interest. That=s the Good News! God did not remain in Heaven receiving a computer printout on the world=s sufferings. God did not issue a memo to form a committee to work on recommendations for solving world problems. God came into the trenches. What=s more, Jesus became one of the wounded, one of us. His hands are still nail-scarred. In the Christ Child, God became the Wounded Healer that Isaiah spoke about in today=s first reading. Like any child, this Christ Child wants our love and affection; wants us to spend time with Him, especially during Advent. We are like the little four-year-old girl whose mother gave birth to a baby brother and explained to her daughter that the baby brother came from God. The girl asked to spend time alone with the baby. After hesitating, the parents allowed the four-year-old to have her private conference with her little brother. They left the room but kept the door ajar and peeked in. They saw the little girl put her face close to her brother=s and say, AJimmy, tell me what God is like. I am starting to forget.@ We come to Advent and Christmas each year to ask the Christ Child to remind us what God is like. Please take time to rediscover what you might have lost or forgotten. It will make a huge difference in your life.
