Happy New Year! But it’s only December, you may say. It’s true that our calendar year begins on January 1st, but the church year begins each year with the sea-son of Advent, usually the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Advent comes from the Latin word adventus meaning “coming”. It is a time when we wait for the coming of Jesus both at Christmas and again at the end of the age. Our altar, lectern and pulpit are adorned in blue, the color of Advent. We sing hymns that remind us to wait. Our prayer response is “Wait for the Lord, whose day is near. Wait for the Lord, be strong take heart.” We are lighting candles each week as we build to Christmas and cel-ebrate Jesus the light of the world, a light no darkness can overcome. Each week our days get longer and darker, so each week we add to our light, remembering, “when we sit in darkness, God is our light” (Abraham Joshua Heschel). On Wednesdays we sing Holden Evening Prayer and offer Holy Com-munion to people who wish to be nourished in this time of waiting and longing for the Lord. We’ll light candles to mark our waiting too. It’s tempting in this time to jump to Christ-mas. Stores play Christmas music (now often called holiday music), we spend our time readying our homes for visitors and editing our Christmas card list and Gift list. I do this too. But I want to en-courage you to take a few minutes each day to read from the Bible, spend a few moments in prayer and thanksgiving, and, if you are able, take some time away from screens (tv, computer, phone) and light a candle to remember Jesus the light of the world,

born for us so many years ago and also returning to us. Remember, Jesus is with us always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20). Merry Christmas! We’ll be celebrating on Christmas Eve at the “regular” times again this year, at 5:00 p.m. and 10:00

p.m. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! As our sanctuary fills, please make room for visitors and if you see someone you don’t know, introduce yourself with a greeting of welcome! This year Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, so we will gather for worship and to receive Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m.. We’ll sing hymns and read the Christmas story from Matthew. And another Happy New Year! January comes quickly and so do opportunities to serve! In 2012 we will be asking for volun-teers to sign up to serve as ushers and coffee fellowship stewards. We have decided to retire the model of Serving Committees. This year, you are asked to serve one Sunday dur-

ing the year. More details to come! We’ll also be looking for volunteers to serve on our Altar Guild, Offering Steward Team, and Education Team. Many hands make light the load, so be sure to sign up to serve. There is joy in the place where our greatest gifts meets the world’s (and sometimes even the church’s) greatest needs (Frederick Buechner). Thank you and thanks be to God for another great year together at GLC!

My mom used to love Martha Stewart. She would record her show and watch it every day after work and read her magazine monthly. And I know for a fact that if my mom was living still today, she would have been proud of "her Martha" this year. Martha Stewart was on the Today Show recently talking about her quest to "rescue Thanksgiving" from the post-Halloween push of Christmas mer-chandizing. I have seen a sign on the internet that I have appreciated; Nordstrom Department Stores have hung up a sign that says: "At Nordstrom...we won't be deck-ing our halls until Friday, Nov. 27 Why? Well, we just like the idea of celebrating one holiday at a time. From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving I hope that you had a "Happy Thanksgiving" but I have a some-thing I feel like I need to confess. I am a "Black Friday" shopper, but, not the kind of "Black Friday" shopper that you assume. A few of my friends and I get dressed up in "Christmas garb" and do a bit of shopping, we eat lunch together and go to a mov-ie. It is more about having fun and spending time together. In fact, most of us buy very little. Be-cause, to me, that is not what this time of year is about. To me, this time of year is about spending time with the people I care about, not the shop-ping, not the lists. In fact this year, I am planning on buying very few "things" and my gifts will be more experiences with the people that I care about and/or "gifting" items/money to agencies that those people care about. The weekend before Thanksgiving was the Syn-od's Middle School Youth Gathering in Grand Forks, which I was the Event Coordinator for; the theme this year was "Be." The theme verse was

Romans 12:2, which I think is an important message for me this time of the year... Do not be conformed to this world, but be trans-formed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. It is easy for me to get caught up in the materialistic

part of this time of year, and I love, love, love giving presents. But I need to remember to not be "conformed to this world." And perhaps look at things in a different way. If you have not heard about the website ad-ventconspiracy.org, or seen the videos, I invite you to check it out. It has moved me, and my prayer is that it will move you too. Blessings on the rest of your day, Kris Johnson

Council Meeting

November 9, 2011

Members Present: Pam Rudolf, Joan Stenerson, Kris Johnson, Pastor Jeni Wanda Peterson, Carrie Smith, and Cindy Henriksen

Devotion/Check-in/GLC Mission Statement

Secretary’s Report: read and passed

Treasure’s Report: read and passed

Ministers’ Report:

Pastor Jeni’s Report November 2011 It’s hard to believe that another month has passed! Time is passing with such speed that it’s hard to keep up! Worship It’s been another solid month for me here at GLC. I have preached and presided at worship each Sunday and Wednesday. Worship continues to be lively and full. We had another week of over 180 between Sunday and Wednesday just this past week. It was great to welcome our new members. About 25, I believe! Thanks to those who participated in the New Member Reception on Sunday and New Member Potluck Dinner on Wednesday. Wednesday Nights have taken off! We’ve doubled in size from last year and we’re having a blast. Many thanks to our new guitarist Matt Aakre for playing and to Cindy Henriksen for being the “Martha”, taking care of many of the behind the scenes tasks. I’ve been working on finding a new organist. While we have some leads, we still do not have an organist who will be able to commit to being at GLC full-time. We have a new lead I will follow up on this week. An-drew Steinberg will play for us 10/30 and 11/06, 12/04, 12/24 and 12/25. We also hope to see Peggy Johnson fill-in for us on a regular basis. Education Confirmation continues to run at full speed. We have met every Wednesday morning from 8:20-9:20 at Dil-worth Lutheran Church. We are so very thankful for their hospitality. Between 7th, 8th and 9th grade, we cur-rently have 38 confirmands. I hope to work more with Kris and the 9th graders as they prepare for confirma-tion. 9th Grade Confirmation will be Sunday, January 8th at 9 a.m. (It was moved from February 19th). On one Sunday, I had the privilege of sitting in on 78s (Sunday School/Youth Group for 7th and 8th Graders) and really enjoyed the conversation and questions. Visitation I attended a Varsity Volleyball game and 8th Grade Football game as well as a Varsity Football game this past month. It’s great to cheer the kids on and see them achieve great things. It’s also a great time to connect with parents. It’s great fun all around! I’ve been able to get to more visits this month. I visited our Eventide shut-ins on Tuesday, November 8th. I made 3 home visits. I had a pre-marital conversation with Tyler Palya and Sam Jansen, who will be married in September 2012. I have also been in conversation with another couple interested in a June wedding. I attended the funeral of Glenn Rosenfeldt and the visitation of Jeanette Grinde. Other On November 2nd we saw the return of our Harvest Supper! Almost 400 people came through our doors. A lot of hard work was put into this great event. Many thanks for all the hands that served and supported GLC. Our envelope fundraiser was a huge success as well! In the years to come, we’ll look to form a special event team to help continue our Harvest Suppers.

In order to alleviate some of our workloads, I have been devising teams of volunteers to help with different aspects of our ministry. We have re-instituted our Properties Team. I would like to see an Education Team, Of-fering Steward Team and a re-worked Serving Team. In each of these teams, we will seek the work of many vol-unteers so that no one has to shoulder the burden alone. Many hands make light the load! On November 6th I hosted a meeting/discussion about Serving Committees for the year 2012. Our plan will be to ask people to commit to one Sunday each year. We will send out letters and ask that people return a post-card with their availability and preferences for serving, including serving funerals, making bars for funerals, and serving quilter’s lunch. I will look to discuss the Education Team and have it set up for Fall 2012. A meeting to help organize this team will happen sometime in the new year. I have learned this month that the church of Christ is a slow moving and sometimes clunky thing, but it’s been around a while and while change is all around us, it does take time. An African proverb comes to mind: “If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” We are in this boat together, but the good news is that Christ steers our ship and guides us through the waters. Family Minister’s Report:

This has been another very busy month. I have begun tracking my hours and the tasks that I have been doing, this has been a great mirror for me to see how I am spending my time with and for the people of Glyndon Lu-theran. Here is a snapshot: Since my last report I have had two Sundays away from Glyndon. The first was October 16th, when I was in Seattle, becoming a Godmother to my first God-daughter, Lillian Johanne. A fun thing about this, was that it was at the church and with the pastor that I did my college internship with. The second was October 30, when I was at Trinity Lutheran in Moorhead, where my uncle has served as Senior Pastor for the past seven years, retired after 35 years of ministry. Thank you Pastor Jeni for helping make those weekends a possibility, and to the Sun-day School teachers who helped on those Sundays go smoothly. I have remained busy with Confirmation, teaching the 8th graders and walking with the 9th graders as they pre-pare for their Affirmation of Baptism on Sunday, January 8th. The 7th and 8th graders raked leaves of three parishioners homes on October 20th. Thank you to Lois Blattenbauer, Janelle Geiser, and Becky Crompton for helping rake and transporting our workers. We had our now annual Reformation Party with the 78s on Wednes-day, the 26th, complete with a "Diet of Worms" contest. Sunday/Wednesday School has continued to be a great thing, as told to me by both the teachers and the stu-dents. The teachers like the ease of having everything they need and the movement, of going from station to sta-tion. The students are learning the stories in ways that reach many more students learning abilities. We have also begun Christmas program practice Wednesdays after school for those students with parts. This year the program will be on Sunday, December 18th at 11:00 am. I have re-worked the program that I wrote a few years ago on Advent. We have the registrations in for next summer's National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. We have four High School girls and two adults, including myself. We are signed up for traveling to and from New Orleans with Pathways Outdoor Ministries. We have had a wreath fundraiser, and we are preparing for a special breakfast on December 18th. As the Synod Coordinator for the National Gathering, I have been answering a lot of questions via phone and email to our synod's congregations that will be attending the gathering. This has been a very busy time for preparing for the Synod's Middle School Gathering. I have been working on housing, schedules, contracts, answering questions, designing shirts, doing mailings, planning the worships and workshops, and running a lot of errands. I feel a lot more prepared for the gathering this year as compared to last years. We will have a group of 13 people from GLC attending the gathering as well! I also met with my sales person at Arrowwood in Alexandria to work on the contracts for 2012 and 2013. Some of the other things that I have been doing have included:

During the Harvest Supper this year I got to hang out with the kids of those working. I went to the DGF High School Potato Band and Choir Concert. I made a short presentation to give to the Trinity Foundation Board for their support with the Haiti building projects. I had the honor of being involved in Kristi (Krabbenhoft) and John Erickson's wedding on October 29th. I have written a few National Honor Society recommendation let-ters. I continue to organize a monthly meeting of area youth workers. All in all, a good month.

Topics of Discussion:

New Business

2. Stewardship

a. online Giving Option (VANCO): GLC has been looking into using this service. It costs $20/month and a few cents per transaction. Wanda made a motion to implement this service. Carrie second. Motion passed. Announcements will be made and information in newsletter for those wishing to use this type of payment op-tion.

b. 2012 Budget: A small group met to look at the 2011 budget vs what was actually needed to create the 2012 budge. They got through most of the information. They will meet prior to next council meeting to finalize.

c. Membership Rolls: We are looking at the list of inactive members and a letter will soon be going out to them asking if they would like to maintain their membership with GLC or if they are joining another church. There are some organizations that the church pays based on membership. We would like to clarify this number.

Offering Steward

Dual Control: We are looking at implementing a system regarding monies counted and deposited on behalf of the church. A dual system would require two people to count and deposit monies. This protects all parties involved. There has never been an issue with this, but we want to avoid anything that could arise for future conflicts. We have a list of names of people whom we hope would like to work in this area. We are hoping to have this team in place January 1, 2012. If you are interested in being on this team, please contact the office.

Serving Teams 2012: We are changing the way that monthly servers are in place. Instead of assigning people to a month, a letter will be forthcoming asking people when they would like to sign up. If each person/family would take one Sunday, it would cover the entire year. Sign up will be available at the church , via email/phone call to the office, or returning the post card.

3. Worship

a. Growing Numbers Update: We are happy to report that attendance at GLC is growing. We are averag-ing 100 people at Sunday Worships and Wednesday worship varies between 50-80 people.

b. Organist: We do not have a full time organist in place at this time. However we have about three people who are willing to rotate this duty.

c. Thanksgiving Eve Service: For those wishing to attend a service, Scandia Lutheran will be hosting a community service

Alter Guild: We are looking at various ideas to simplify this process.

4. Education

a. Update on Sunday School: The new curriculum and station centered teaching that we are using on for Sunday School is working very well. The Wednesday School is also working well. We still have openings for volunteers to teach. Please check the sign up bulletin board by the church office.

Update on Confirmation

January 8th 2012: This is the date that this years confirmants parents have chosen for the day of confirma-

Page 7: December 2011

Council Minutes cont.

Page 7

tion. We are looking at other possibilities for future years.

c. Education Team: We have a list put together of possible people to participate on a team. We are hoping that each team would work a month at a time and that this plan be in place for fall 2012. If you are interested in being on this team, please contact the office.

d. Properties

a. Snow Removal: Randall’s Excavating, Inc will be taking care of snow removal for this season.

b. Insurance Quotes: Pam is in the process of reviewing quotes that we have received by various insurance agents. She will be giving our current carrier a chance to requote what is in place. A decision will be made by Dec 14, 2011. There have been no problems with our current provider, however other agents have contacted us with lower quotes. It is always in our best interest to explore and find an opportunity to save money.

c. Upcoming Projects: Property board members will be looking into ceiling issues by the Narthex and Educa-tion Wings. As it will save us quite a bit of money to have members do these types of projects, rather then hiring a contractor, these projects are being done as work schedules allow.

d. Harvest Supper: The harvest supper went very well. We served 378+ people and had many volunteers to help make this returning event a success. Thanks to all who volunteered with this event.

Strategic Plan: We will continue to look at options/plans to continue our awesome growth at GLC.

Closed with the Lord’s Prayer

Next council meeting will be held on December 14th at 7:45 pm.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24

We had two Senior High runners in Cross Country this past season, Austin Schultz, Senior and Marissa

Blair, Sophomore. From Marissa “Cross Country was an amazing experience this year…our boys went to state for the very first time ever in the history of our school. The girls didn’t have enough people to be scored as a team, but we still had a lot of fun together!”

Volleyball has been a long standing tradition in Glyndon. We had several girls in every team. From Bailey Fuchs, Junior, “…it was a successful season and our team really was a like a big family. It was extremely fun and we made a lot of good memories.” From Cait-lin Ash, Sophomore, “This was the best season by far. My JV team was 27-1 at the end of the season. On top

of that we all got along really good and it was so much fun!” And from Madi-son Geiser, Junior, “We had a good season; a lot of our seniors took charge of the court. Some games we didn’t play our hardest and we weren’t in the game and everyone could tell but as we started going we had a lot better turn outs. (And about the end of the sea-son) we played our best we could and did really well against Wadena it just didn’t turn out in our favor.”

It says in Psalm 149 that we can praise

the Lord with dancing…and this is true! This fall there

was a student led group that started a fall danceline.

Danielle Peterson, Junior, was on the team “We loved

having a new team with new people. It was a great ex-

perience to get us ready for the winter season.” And

Mariah Henriksen, Sophomore, said “The first year of

fall dance was really good! We made up both dances so

everything we did was fun! And we had awesome vol-

unteer coaches that pushed us and made us 12 times

better than we were.
