Finally, the built-in camera on the iPadmeans that our students can be morecreative than ever in putting togetherlearning opportunities, demonstratingtheir knowledge, sharing their creativity. In addition, they will make it easier thanever to capture what takes place in ourcongregation on a daily basis.

OnDecember 18 at 11:30 a.m., the conversation will continue and we wouldlove for you to join us. In addition to sharing specific programmatic ideas wewill examine the core values that make our congregation what it is andexplore how we might better share, enrich and deepen them.

From theRabbi’s Study

A Thoughtto Share

(cont. on page 2)

The snow that fell this October causedan unbelievable level of destruction. As I drove around, our local streetslooked more like the streets of a war

torn village than the beautiful colorful neighborhoods we expectat this time of year. I felt such a tremendous level of sadness forthe trees that were so broken and battered. Many of us were leftwithout power, experiencing a new level of cold. I know therewere some that stayed in their homes and braved the cold whileothers moved in with neighbors , family or friends whofortunately still had power and heat. I was impressed with thecare that people had for one another. Everyone was asking, “Areyou okay?” “Is there anything you need?” “How can I help?”

At the end of what was a very long week for many, my son Jackwas the Shabbat child in his preschool class. As always it was apleasure to sit on the Bima with our preschool studentswelcoming Shabbat with story and song. In Jack’s classroom thechildren were seated waiting to say the Shabbat blessings whenthe teacher began to say, “We are so lucky today…” and a littleboy jumped in and shouted, “Because we have power!” All thekids agreed.

This October, many of us experienced the discomfort of beingcold and or homeless for just a few days but far too many in ourcountry experience this everyday. As we prepare to go into thewinter holiday season we are lucky enough that we can begenerous and give to those who have very little. If you havenew/unopened toiletry items, new or gently used toys, booksand clothing, and small household items in good conditionplease drop them off at temple from December 9-14. Theseitems will be taken to the Interfaith Food Pantry of the Orangesto be distributed prior to the start of the holidays.

Another way that we can express appreciation and gratitude isto say blessings. For 8 nights of Chanukah we are able to take afew minutes to light the Chanukiah and say the blessings beforetearing into presents. On the first night we say 3 blessings, onefor lighting the candles, one for miracles and finally theshehechiyanu (for giving us life, sustaining us and enabling usto reach this season). On nights 2-8 we say only the first twoblessing. By saying the blessings it reminds us to take just alittle bit of time to be thankful. So here is a bit of a challenge-On the first night of Chanukah after lighting the candles haveyour family take a minute to answer the questions, “What areyou grateful for and why?” and “What modern day miracles doyou see in the world?” Then write a blessing of your own thatcan be included as part of your Chanukah tradition. I would loveto hear the blessings that you create.

Dear Friends

I am thrilled to share with all of you thatThe Carvel Foundation has approved agrant of almost $20,000 which will allow TSTI to create a state-of-the-art technology lab filled with iMacs and iPads. Theobvious benefits will be felt by the students in our Iris FamilyCenter for Early Childhood Education and the Linda and RudySlucker Religious School, but the impact will hopefully be feltcongregation-wide.

For the past few years we have been urged to do more withtechnology in our school. Despite my love of technology, untilnow I believed it would be a distraction from our coreeducational goals rather than an enhancement to them.

Two things have changed over the past months that now make itthe right time to pursue this educational enhancement. First, weare a beta site for a new Jewish online learning endeavor byBehrman House publishers. Second, because of the amazing workRabbi Miller and the Religious School Board have done over thelast few years, as well as the transformative impact our newReligious School Director Mindy Schreff has already had, ourdays of organizational and communication strife within thereligious school are thankfully behind us.

Our grant request was presented to the Thomas and Agnes CarvelFoundation Board of Directors this past summer and unanimouslyapproved last month.

I am excited about the possibilities that this grant affords us as acongregation, and I am excited to have the opportunity to be amodel for what other religious institutions can do withtechnology if they are similarly inclined.

So what will this new technology lab enable us to do?

First, the new Behrman House technology portal is something thathas the potential to transform Jewish education. While much of itwill be focused on what students do at home, there is an in-schoolcomponent. This lab makes this possible.

Second, there is some excellent education material available forboth desktop and iPad environments and the purchase of saidsoftware is built into the grant. In addition, I have personallybeen working on an iPad-based tutorial software system forprayer preparation. Previously this would have excluded anystudent who did not have an iPad in their homes and wastherefore not acceptable for us to employ. Now that we will have

Chanukah, also known as the Festivalof Lights, occurs very close to theWinter Solstice, the shortest day ofthe year. This is a time of year when

we really concentrate on bringing our unique “light” to theworld. The Jewish call for peace, equality and justice is morerelevant now than ever, and it is incumbent upon us to continuethe work of spreading peace and light in the dark months ofwinter.

This year, as part of our ChanukahMania celebration, we will beproducing “Peace Poles” to be used in our new outdoorclassroom. Everyone who attends will be asked to contribute aword of peace in one of many world languages. Our wishes forpeace are much stronger when we work together. The Peace PoleProject started in Japan in 1955 by Masahisa Goi, who decided todedicate his life to spreading the message, “May Peace Prevail onEarth” in response to the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Peace Poles are handcrafted monuments erected the world overas international symbols of Peace. As we continue to learn tohonor one another, our environment, plants, animals and allcreations on Earth, we hope the vision of global peace willgradually become a natural way of life. We look forward notonly to the process of working together to spread messages ofpeace, but to having our messages shared with everyone whovisits our outdoor classroom.

ChanukahMania is just around the corner. This is a wonderfulopportunity for our congregation to come together during thedark days of winter. We hope that you will join us on Sunday,December 18 from 9-11:30 as we celebrate the holiday togetherwith crafts, food and meaningful mitzvah projects.

I must confess, December 25 has alwaysbeen a special day for me.

My mother’s mother was a Polish bornimmigrant. She was the most revered

and loved person in our family. She was the loving wife of mygrandfather, a committed socialist who was regularly fired fromjobs every time he tried to unionize the workers. She raised notonly her three children (my mother was the youngest) but twocousins whose mother had died at an earlier age. These “5”children gave her 8 grandchildren (I was the youngest).

In her later years, my Grandmother came to live with us. I got tosee firsthand just how amazing she was. Despite having arthritisso severe that she could not straighten her hands, she wasconstantly cooking and baking for our family. When I wouldcome home from school to do my newspaper route, I would findthat she had rolled and rubber banded all my papers. I neverheard her say a harsh word about anyone.

My Grandmother had so many wonderful attributes. What shedid not have was … a birthday. She just did not know the date ofher birth. This was not uncommon among Eastern Europeanimmigrants. The Jewish communities of Eastern Europe wereleery of going to the towns where the gentiles lived. Registeringa birth required such a visit. In our case, the family decided thatDecember 25 would be my Grandmother’s birthday. WhyDecember 25? It was the one day that everyone would have offfrom work. It allowed the whole family to come together tocelebrate.

There was a beehive of activity the days before December 25.My Grandmother would be working and baking non-stop, herspecial chopped eggplant, chopped liver and other Jewishdelicacies. And she would bake dozens of cookies which Ialways believed were baked just for me.

December 25 would arrive and my family would come from allover; from Brooklyn and Atlantic City. My aunt and uncle whowintered in Florida would come back; my aunt and uncle fromRochester, New York would drive down to New Jersey, oftendriving through blizzards. Nothing would stop my family frombeing with my Grandmother on her special day.

My grandmother died in 1968 when I was 16 years old. I still tryto visit her gravesite once a year. When I read the date of herbirth inscribed on her memorial stone, December 25, so manywonderful memories return.

Carol PasterPreschool Director

It’s hard to ignore writing about the incredible freak snowstormthat we experienced at the end of October even though you arereading this article most likely after Thanksgiving. It wasn’t somuch the snow that we were all talking about in the preschoolthe next few days. It wasn’t even the loss of power we had allexperienced. What touched us all was how much devastation ofthe trees had occurred. It wasn’t just the fact that branches fellon property or that they had blocked streets. It was the sheervolume of the loss of limbs from old trees that had been in ourneighborhoods for a century.

Perhaps we are more in tune with the effects the storm had onour natural environment as a school because we are committedto exposing children to the awe and wonder of the greatoutdoors. As you read this article, TSTI’s Iris Family Center willhave already broken ground for its Outdoor Classroom. The newproject has been designed to balance the effects of too muchscreen time and not enough ‘green’ time. We want the childrento use all 5 senses in the garden areas. They should see thevariety of colors and shapes in the natural world, they shouldhear the sounds of rustling leaves, smell the scent of flowersand herbs. They should be able to taste the literal fruits of theirlabors. They should touch the difference between a fuzzy lamb’sear leaf and a plant with thistles. We are not alone in ourconcerns about too much screen time. In an October 21, 2011New York Times article entitled “A Silicon Valley School ThatDoesn’t Compute,” Matt Richtel reports that “the chieftechnology officer of eBay sends his children to a nine-classroom school here. So do employees of Silicon Valley giantslike Google, Apple, Yahoo and Hewlett-Packard. But theschool’s chief teaching tools are anything but high-tech: pensand paper, knitting needles and, occasionally, mud. Not acomputer to be found. No screens at all. They are not allowed inthe classroom, and the school even frowns on their use at home.”

I am proud that our teachers were all concerned about the lossof so much of our natural landscape. I am even more proud thatmany of them spent the past few weeks wondering how to getall those tree stumps and odd logs over to the school so we coulduse them as teaching tools, as benches, as climbingopportunities, and as ‘flooring’ for our natural pathways.

This story is just one of themany stories I have about theexperiences of mygrandparents and my fatherwho immigrated to the UnitedState from Eastern Europe. I amsure that all of us have similarwonderful stories. Will thesestories survive? As the years goby and we are farther awayfrom these events, I fear thatstories of the Jewishimmigration and absorptioninto American society will dieaway. That would be such ashame because our childrenand grandchildren shouldknow about their heritage. Assinger songwriter Marc Cohnwrote “From places no onehere remembers come thethings we’ve handed down.”So, I suggest that we all take alittle time to write down thestories of the immigrantgeneration and pass them ontothe new generation. And, ifyou want to share them, Iwould love to read them. Pleasesend them [email protected].

Parent-Baby Groups

Come and meet with other parents to discuss your baby andthe changes you are experiencing:

Your baby’s feeding & sleeping patternsYour baby’s physical and emotional developmentSleep deprivationRelationship and emotional changesDecisions about child care & returning to work

Underlying the group work is the idea that parents come toknow their babies best and are their own “experts.”

Each parent is given time to discuss discoveries with his/herbaby. The presence of the babies in the room, sparksobservation, conversation, and reflection, which adds to amulti-layered group experience!
