We talked about it last month and we are going to start a bounty for someone to knock Scott Frost out of a local tournament. This bounty is only valid for Arizona players and will grow each month that Scott plays in a local event and wins. We missed two contributors last month and I apologize to Sophia Morquecho and Dave Thomson for not mentioning them. We also apologize to Mitch Ellerman for getting his phone number wrong on his ad last month. It has been corrected this month. Looking forward to seeing everyone out at the AWBT and DCT season fi nales this month. Kitty’s is also holding the Az State Senior Barbox Championship, which should be a great event.

Until January... - Mike

Ed Scott Wins at KnobbysEd Scott plowed through a field of twenty other play-ers and held off a red-hot Joe Nicita to win the Knob-bys 9 & Under 8-Ball event on November 2nd.

Ed had a nice run through the winners side with wins over Bruce Hirose, Pete Bar-rios, Joe Nicita and then Oscar Avila for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Nicita was embracing his new rating - as a seven - and mowing down the opponents he faced. Nicita beat Joe S., Pete Barrios and Os-car Avila to earn his place against Scott in the race to two finals.

Ed won the toss and ran down to the 8 in the first game. Bad shape on the 8 led to Nicita getting his chance at the table, and he took full advantage by running the table for the 1-0 lead. Game two was Joe’s turn to miss late in a run and Ed ran out to tie the match at 1-1. Nicita broke dry in the final game and Ed ran out the rack for the 2-1 win and first place.

Final Payouts:1st Ed Scott $270 (with side pots)2nd Joe Nicita $1003rd Oscar Avila $90 (with side pots)4th Pete Barrios $405th Joe S. $105th Rod Elliott $10

Bobby Emmons won a battle of the young guns to notch his second Desert Classic Tour win of the year at Bullshooters in Phoenix.

The field of 39 players was full of top players including such notables as Gus Briseno, Chuck Evans, Nick De Leon, Terry Osborne, Dennis Orender, Mike Sandoval, Paul Grande and Pete Lhotka.

The four players to navigate Saturday play unbeaten were Emmons, Grande, De Leon and Lhotka.

Emmons beat Grande and De Leon defeated Lhotka to set up the hot-seat match.

The battle for the hot-seat was close all the way, but Emmons scored the hill-hill win to send De Leon to the left side of the brackets.

On the one loss side, Briseno and B player Jim Hendrickson were on a collision course with each other. Briseno eliminated Tres Kane 10-3 and then Pete Lhotka 10-7 (hill-hill).

At the same time, Hendickson eliminated Dennis Orender 7-6 and Grande 7-3.

This left Briseno and Hendrickson facing off for the right to play De Leon. It looked like the match was over when Briseno scratched on a 9-ball at 7-5 to let Hendrickson to the hill, but Briseno dug down to win the next three games for the 10-6 win.

Next up for Briseno was De Leon, and there would be no digging down and pulling out the win for Briseno this time. De Leon took com-plete control of this match early and didn’t let

Briseno to the table with a clean shot at anything. At 5-0 De Leon, Briseno had seen enough and unscrewed his cue, giving the match to De Leon.

As impressive as De Leon’s play had been in the match with Briseno, Emmons matched him shot for shot in the final match. The final match was tied at 1-1 and 2-2 be-fore the first two rack lead was held by Emmons at 4-2. De Leon then tied things back up at 4-4. After that run, it was Emmons turn for a run and he won three straight games for the 7-4 lead. De Leon pulled back to 7-5, but Emmons put the match away in rack thirteen for the 8-5 win.

Even Emmons’ tournament win was not enough for him to catch tour points leader Chuck Evans. Evans ends the season as the points leader with Briseno, Emmons, Scott Frost and Brett Hutch filling out the top five places.

Final Payouts:1st Bobby Emmons $1,0052nd Nick De Leon $5153rd Gus Briseno $2754th Jim Hendrickson $1755th Pete Lhotka / Paul Grande $120 each7th Dennis Orender / Tres Kane $75 each

The teams of Joe Masi & JR Burkhart and Jimmy Brewer & Chad Barber split two matches against each other and decided to split Stinger’s November Scotch Doubles event instead of play-ing out a third set.

The fi eld of seventeen teams on November 17th was packed with top talent and a clear cut favor-ite was hard to pick.

Masi & Burkhart had wins over Jerry Stuckart & Brian Poore, Todd Dilley & Joe D’Aguano and Bruce and Corey Wheeler to earn their place in the hot-seat match.

Brewer & Barber didn’t have things any easier with wins over Jimmy Rogers & Jarrett Phillips and Justin Wethington & Joe Nicita on their way to the hot-seat match.

As evenly matched as the two teams were com-peting for the hot-seat, it was no surprise that things went to hill-hill before Masi & Burkhart pulled out the win.

Meanwhile, on the one loss side, Chuck Bobbitt & Robin Clark were riding their low handicap to win after win. After a loss to Amanda Pulley & her partner Adam, Bobbitt & Clark won fi ve straight matches on the left side before being eliminated by Brewer & Barber in third place.

The fi rst set of the double elimination fi nals got underway with Masi/Burkhart going to 9 and Brewer/Barber going to 8. The long match saw both teams struggle and both teams excel at dif-ferent parts of the match.

Masi & Burkhart held a 5-2 lead, only to see Brewer & Barber fi ght back to tie things at 6-6.

The match would be tied again at 7-7 before Brewer & Barber won the case game for the 8-7 victory.

Considering the late hour, both teams agreed on a split from there.

Total Payouts:1 Joe Masi / JR Burkhart $5802 Jimmy Brewer / Chad Barber $5803 Chuck Bobbitt / Robin Clark $2154 Bruce Wheeler / Corey Wheeler $170

November’s One Pocket Tournament had a small turnout but wasn’t by any means short on talent. We had a tough player fi eld no matter who you were, and with the matrix in place even the best were challenged. In a fi eld of nine, everyone drew fi rst round Bye’s except Terry Osborne and Scott Frost. The tournament was on.

With the bump in his number to a 10-5 Scott had his hands full and when Terry managed to send him on his way there was a little bit of grumbling heard. Not too much, and as a tournament direc-tor you expect some when numbers are adjusted, but it wasn’t looking good for Scott to extend his run to 14 tournaments in a row. Bernie Pettip-iece drew Mike Pankoff and without a whisper stepped up with his new number (10-3) and gave up 9/7 – 9/8. I’m pretty sure I heard some grum-bling there too but it didn’t come from Bernie. Where is all this grumbling coming from? Joe Watson unlike last month was the vanquished not the victor in his match with Lenny (The Lock) Marshall and Preacher Ronn drew the new guy Bill Stroud. Luckily for Ronn, Bernie was con-sulted on the rating for Bill and the 10-3 rating was just about right. Ronn came away with the win and that left us with the Bobbie Emmons / Terry Osborne match. Terry was in rare form today and continued to make short work of both Bobby and then Ronn setting up a hot-seat match with Lenny who after whipping on Joe managed to put down the Burnese Python. Who would win the hot seat?

Bill managed to put Bobby away on the One-Loss side but Bernie would prove too much for him. Scott caught Mike Pankoff in his PJ’s with a declared 3 foul boo-boo. Mike, has anyone told you that giving a one game lead to Scott is probably not good? Scotty put Mike down

for nighty-nite and then sent Joe back to Tucson. Ok Joe, you’ve ducked enough, we’re not going to raise you. Preacher Ronn put up a small fi ght with the 11/6 – 11/7 spot from Scott but couldn’t bring home the bacon. Scott went on to send Bernie home but everyone agreed that the 10/7 spot was more fair that last month despite the matrix and number changes. Lenny claimed the hot-seat know-ing that it was his last Live Stream for a while send-ing Terry over to do battle with Scott. By now it was too late. The “Freezer” smelled the cash and win number 14 so things didn’t quite work-out the same for Terry this time. Great shooting Terry, we were glad to have you out and hope to see more of you.

So there you have it. It’s Lenny (The Lock) Marshall vs. Scott the “Freezer” Frost for the Championship, and there off. Lenny temporarily lulled Scott into taking a nap with talk about how he’s not interested in win-ning but when he notched the fi rst game Scott woke up. Ahhh… just like fresh coffee. Scott pulled in game two but Lenny was not going away and with game 3 on his side Scott was really in danger of watching his 14 run go down the drain. That was all it took for the “Freezer” to thaw out and from then on it was all Scott. Congratulations Lenny you gave it a great run and you more than deserve the $100 prize for 2nd. We’ll miss you for the next few months but good luck on the Bonus Ball in Vegas. Congrats and High-Five to Scott, you

truly are a monster and rightfully earned the $190 fi rst place prize. I hope to see your run continued.

As always a special thank you goes out to Kolby’s Corner Pocket for hosting. Our next tournament will be November 24th at Bullshooters in Phoenix. Hope to see you then.

APA Phoenix Metro held its first annual Division Represen-tative Appreciation Party and Board Tournament No-vember 17th at Skip & Jan’s in Tempe.

The Division Representatives help APA League Operators Doug and Gina Nowlin manage their league and they wanted to give something back to these valuable individuals.

There were cash awards given to everyone who attended and some special awards and recogni-tion given to four Division Representatives who went beyond their normal duties to make a dif-ference in the League.

Bill Huddart took home the “Best Damn Re-cruiter” award for the 2012 League Year recruit-ing more than 30 new members this year. Chris Carlisle won the “Best Damn Board Runner” award for running over 25 qualifier boards to send members to the National Single Champion-ships held in Vegas each year.

The “Rising Star” award was given to Dede Burum a new Division Representative starting less than 2 months ago who is already running boards and recruiting for the League. She is very involved in her ladies division and hopes to build it into one of APA’s stronger divisions.

The “Super Star” award was given to David McCauley, a Division Representative who has worked with the League Operators from 2008 until now. In the beginning he was overseeing 5 divisions, recruiting, running qualifier boards, working all the tournaments and still playing 4

nights a week. He is a valuable asset to the League and continues to support all League members.

The night ended with three division representatives Bill Huddart, Dede Burum and Tom Reed winning qualifier boards to attend the regional event held in Phoenix in March. Winners of that event go to Vegas in April to play in The National Singles Championship where over 500 individuals compete for a part of the $175,000 in cash and awards given out.

Everyone who attended had a great time and can’t wait for next year.

APA Phoenix Metro held its session ending Junior/Adult Scotch Doubles Tournament on No-vember 11th. This is also the Juniors awards ceremony

and party for the Summer Session.

Taking 1st Place and Top Gun for the Summer Session in the Young Guns Division (ages 12-18) was Mark Avalos. 2nd Place was won by Mi-chael Dale. These two young men are two of the best shooters in the Junior Division. Last session it was Michael taking 1st and Mark in 2nd. They just keep battling it out.

In the Junior Guns (ages 6-11) 1st Place and Top Gun was Jahnythan Craig. It was a close race all session and Kyra Avalos took 2nd Place. Kyra was also the 3rd place winner at the Junior National 9 Ball Championship held in July in Wisconsin. APA sent 5 Juniors to compete in this competition and Kyra was the highest plac-ing Junior from Phoenix.

There were 13 teams in attendance for the tournament, all having 1 junior and 1 adult team member. This is one of the best tournaments in the Valley to watch and be a part off. These kids know how to play pool, but more importantly they also know how to show respect to their op-ponent and be a good sport.

Peter Sianez, Jr. and his father Rocky took con-trol of the hot seat while Mark Avalos and Nick Deleon battled it out on the loser’s side. It came down to the hill with both teams only needing 1 game. Peter and Rocky prevailed and took home

1st Place trophies, Mark and Nick took 2nd and Jah-nythan and Ralph Craig took home 3rd. An additional congratulations goes to Jahnythan and Ralph for taking out some heavy hitters Jahnythan is 8 years old and loves playing against the big guns.

As usual Bullshooters hosted this tournament for the Juniors and we would like to thank Mike Bates and his family for their continued support of this program over the last 3 years.

APA held its 4th Captain’s Tournament on No-vember 4th at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. 55 players showed up to represent their teams and play for the honor of having their name on the wall at Main Street Billiards to go along with the trophy and cash. Steve Roth from Cue Masters in the Maricopa Division takes home the trophy and $275 in cash for 1st place. Brad Andrews from the ‘Out of Towners’ that play out of the Ham-bone Bar was defending his 1st place victory from last session. Brad was able to clinch the 2nd place spot and $175 in cash. Other winners were:3rd Place - David Rayner $125 4th Place - Randy Martin $95 5th & 6th - Jennifer Thompson and Marc Under-wood $35 each.

Some of APA’s finest players came out for a great day of quality competition and fun. Two of APA’s lower ranked players, Jen Thompson and Marc Underwood, split the 5th and 6th place money, proving that the Equalizer Handicap System that APA uses allows everyone a chance to win.

The Captains tournament is held each session at Main Street Billiards and is a tournament that was created to show appreciation for cap-tains in the APA. Gina Nowlin and her husband Doug Nowlin are the APA league operators in the Phoenix area. Gina says the captains are the players that are the most valuable person on a team. They are the ones that keep things orga-nized and flowing smoothly on league nights. They have a lot of responsibility and we just want to show them some appreciation. This tour-nament has become very popular and is growing each session. We are hoping for an even bigger

turn out next time. We would like to congratulate the winners and thank everyone for making the tournament such a success.

Tap Sportsmanship Award - Shanna FloydPhoenix TAP Pool League recognizes Shanna Floyd for exhibiting outstanding sportsmanship during the 2012 Summer Titleholder event held on Sunday, Octo-ber 21, 2012.

Her opponent, Kenny Grum, was so appreciative of her courtesy that he wanted to make sure she knew her actions did not go unnoticed and asked that this award be presented to her. Here is his story…

“I would like to have Phoe-nix TAP present the Sports-manship award to Shanna Floyd. The reason is that I, Kenny Grum, made a mistake in our game which was…

…after her shot at the 8 ball, she picked up the cue ball and set it on the table, I had not been paying attention to her shot and thought she was conceding the game, in reality she was indicating ball in hand to me. I started to put the balls on the table, at that time she and others made me aware of my mistake (foul). We were both on the hill and her options were to take a win due to my foul, give me the win (as I was on the 8 as well) or re-rack. She said that she did not want to win a match that way and chose to re-play the game. I and my team mates on our team, Full Pockets, feel that she demonstrated true sportsmanship in her decision.”

The TAP Pool League is also extremely appreciative of the actions of Shanna and proud to have her in the league. She has always been the kind of league player that makes the league experience for all players fun and enjoyable.

Thank you and congratulations!

What Would A Sucker Do?

By Jacqueline KarolHouse Pro at DownLo Billiards in Chico, California

You have stripes here. You each only have one ball left and the 8-ball. Your opponent’s ball, the solid, is sitting in the jaws and is directly block-ing your corner pocket shot. What do you do?

1) “Bank your stripe in the corner!”

2) “Slowly roll the your ball up in on front of their solid to prevent them from hitting their ball!”

3) “Replace their ball with yours by softly shooting yours directly into theirs!”

Suckers…

You must assess each situation to come to the best possible answer, which is the one with the highest winning percentage.

Why are these not good ideas?:Bank shots are low percentage and if you miss, your opponent will most surely run out and win. Slow rolling your stripe in front of theirs with accurate speed control is very hard to do and the cost is high if you miss. Softly shooting your ball into theirs will leave your ball in the jaws but you probably won’t get another shot because you will leave them an easy shot on the 8-ball.

Answer: Use draw to put forward spin on your stripe and call it in the corner. This will likely result either one of two positive outcomes: A: If you pocket your stripe, you can now shoot the 8-ball to win the game. B: If your ball does not follow it in and instead, stays in the jaws, you have now blocked their pocket with your stripe because you used a draw speed to set your 8-ball shot in that same corner.

By planning more than one shot ahead and assessing the possible outcomes, you will tremendously increases your odds of winning.

Metro Sportz Bar Raises Money For Local Non-Profit School

The good folks at Metro Sportz Bar are always there to help a worthy cause and they proved that again in November when they raised money for Desert Voices, a local non profit school for teaching deaf children how to speak and listen with the assistance of hearing aids and cochlear implants.

Jennifer Saa is not only a bartender at Metro, she is also a teacher at Desert Voices.

During the 6’s & Under 9-ball tournament on November 10th, Metro donated one dollar from every food or drink purchase to Desert Voices for a total of nearly $1000.

Desert Voices lists their vision as “... a listening and spoken language outcome is made available, accessible and affordable to all children who are deaf or hard of hearing.”

If you would like contribute money to Desert Voices, or just learn more infor-mation about their program, you can go to http://www.desert-voices.org/.

Pulley Scores Metro WinAmanda Pulley won a very competitve six & under event at Metro Sportz Bar on November 10th.

Pulley took the hot-seat with a lopsided 6-3 win over Tim Casey, and began the long wait to see who she would play in the fi nals.

On the one loss side, Preston (a fi ve rated player) beat Bernie Pappas 5-4 to send Pappas home in fourth place.

The semi-fi nal match between Preston and Tim Casey went to hill-hill before Tim pulled out the win to earn another shot at Pulley in the fi nals.

With Amanda not buying into the side pots, Casey knew he had already earned the lion’s share of the prize money and the fi nal match would be more for pride than prize money.

Casey took control of the fi rst set of the fi nal match and ran away with a 6-2 win to force one fi nal set to determine a winner.

The second set started out looking a lot like the previous one, with Casey rolling to a 3-0 lead. That was when Pulley decided she had come too far in this event to settle for second place. Pulley “let her stroke out” and won six of the next seven games for the 6-4 win and fi rst place in the event.

Final Payouts:1st Amanda Pulley $300 (no side pots)2nd Tim Casey $352 (with side pots)3rd Preston $1864th Bernie Pappas $317 (with side pots)

River City Pockets New OwnershipRiver City Pockets, one of Arizona’s time-honored pool halls, has recently been taken over by Greg and Barbara Sayler. The new owners, along with bartend-ers and support team: Carrie, Chrystal, Rachel, Brian, Dave, Phil, and Scott, are working intently to not only make River City a fun place to relax and watch sports with friends and family, but a hotspot for pool players to come to.

River City Pockets is home to 22 well-maintained pool tables… ten 9’ that are rented hourly/daily, and 12 50-cent barbox tables. It is just minutes from the 51 and 101 freeways, on the south-east corner of 12th Street and Bell Road. Sat-urday and Sunday afternoons offer a fun place for families to go play pool, or even catch the favored sport on television. All of these elements complimented by great drink prices and daily specials make the pool hall an ideal venue for pool tournaments, hosting end of the season banquets, or just to come out and play with friends.

Greg and Barbara are happy to announce their fi rst tournament as new owners. Beginning the fi rst Tuesday of December, 12/4/2012, River City will be host-ing a weekly 7’s and under 9-ball tournament (barbox play). The race will be to your handicap minus one on the winners’ side and minus two in the losers’ bracket.

Sign up starts at 6:30 with a start time at 7:00. We can’t wait to see you there as we welcome Greg and Barbara’s efforts to support and contribute to the Val-ley pool scene. They look forward to meeting all of you and establishing River City as a force for pool leagues/tournaments, banquets and neighborhood sports bar! Annual Turkey Shoot Keeps Rolling

Since Bull Shooters opened in 2008, we have held our Night Before Thanksgiv-ing Turkey Shoot. To say it is one of the most successful tournaments we run would be an understatement. Seems most people don’t work on Thanksgiving and want to get the long weekend started right with some friends, some spirits and some darts.

It was no different this year as 58 players showed up to play and lots more to hang out with friends. With the 58 players and a guaranteed $1000 payout it was games on. We didn’t have apple pie, so the great apple pie shots would have to do for the night. As an added special Claudine Price made some great food for one of our Favorite players birthday… It was “Mom” Priscilla’s birth-day and we had plenty of things to help here celebrate.

So back to the tournament it would be a great match up in the fi nals with Dave Wilderman and Tom Hicks against Andy Bates and Ray Arreola. It was an awe-some match with some great darts from all the players, but Andy and Ray would fi nd themselves at the top when the smoke cleared.

The four players in the top two didn’t just go away with the cash. They all received $25 gift certs. From Fry’s to purchase their Turkeys and more. Thanks to all who attended. It was a great time.

Mike, how do I know when I am ready to play in a dart tour-nament, without getting people mad at me?

I hear a couple of things from players who play at bars or their house and are worried about playing a tournament.

One is that they don’t feel they are good enough and two they don’t want to draw a player that gets mad at them.

My first answer to this is that you should start out in a tour-nament with a $5 entry. Most of the bars have them and to me, no one can get mad when it is a $5 entry fee. To me, your ability doesn’t matter as much as you knowing how to play and having at least a decent set of darts.

No player, no matter what level, wants the guy who doesn’t even know the game and asks where the bar darts are? Or worse yet, we had a player a few weeks back who basically demanded his partner let him use her darts.

You can get a decent set for $10. So I would say learn the games that are played in tournaments, mostly 501 and cricket. Purchase some darts and come in with an attitude to have fun and learn more about the game from your partner or opponents.

Next, most partners no matter how good they are, won’t get mad at a low player, unless that player has an atti-tude. By this I mean, if it is your first tournament odds are that you want your partner to cork and shoot first. Some times they may offer for you to go first, but I would decline that to make it clear off the bat that you will shoot second. Nothing sends a more negative thought than someone at their

first tournament over rating their skills.

And if you think shooting that extra round doesn’t matter, think again. So, because you beat Uncle Bill and Bobby Sue at home doesn’t mean you are ready to take over a tournament. Especially in Arizona where the play-ers are pretty good.

So if you have played around and want to jump into a tournament, then you should do so. It should be a great experience and a learning one as well. Remember there are players of all lev-els in the tournament. We have guys who are very low and ladies who are very good. Don’t judge you partner too early based on how they look or if they are a girl.

Just get out and play, have fun and learn, and you will be hooked for a very long time.

These are just my opinions and I may

be wrong, but I doubt it…

Ask Mike

Each year in November we take time out to pay tribute to one of our great dart players who helped make Arizona steel and soft tip darts what they are today.

It is called the Don Henson Classic because he was a class act and great sportsman who loved the game and the people who played it.

Don played the game at the highest level, reach-ing the ???? stage at the North American Open, a long running prestigious steel tip tournament held in Las Vegas, as well as reaching the Mas-ters team finals in consecutive years in the early 90’s. Quite an accomplishment for a player with one of the most un-orthodox styles ever. Some wondered how he could hit the board - let alone play at the level he did.

It was great to see about 70 people or more show up to honor his life and many of our other dart player friends we have lost in the last several years. Yes, we paid out great money for the tour-nament and as always raised money for cancer and Leukemia, but mostly it was to gettogether and tell stories of those who have passed on.

The Arizona Dart family is a close group and in the past three years or so so tragic events have taken several of our players way before their times. It was a tribute to all of them. And it was to let the new players know who these people were and how they contributed in their own ways to make Arizona darts the best that there is.

So we will continue to honor all these players each November, and keep all the great memories alive.

Advice?

So a friend of mine is writing a book about darts and asked if I would write a segment for them about what advice I would give to a new player. It got me thinking, but the advice I came up with is not just for the new player. I been throwing a bit with a player that is thinking about coming back to darts and he is doing the same things new players do…

The first thing every player should do, whether you’re new or looking to make changes, is start with the stroke. It needs to be a long, full stroke. So many players I watch only throw a dart half way. What I mean is this; if your fingers are not pointing at the floor after you’ve thrown the dart, then you are just not getting a full throw. When you “short stroke”, your throw will never be all it can be as it does not have a follow through. In

every other sport the follow through is everything and it is the same here in darts. In basketball the wrist has to break, baseball your arm needs to go all the way around you could not do these events well if you stopped as soon as you let go, could you? With all of us having video on our phones; have someone video your throwing motion to see where you are at. Throw a handful of darts - not just three - while making this change, as you need to have a solid, dependable stroke before your hand and eye can ever communicate leading you to hit what you look at.

The second piece is “Do not let others limit you” or do not set your goals on the players you see around you. So many times I hear people say “I want to beat Player x” Why would you ever look to a short goal? The world of darts is so much more than what you see in the pub. I can tell you the world of professional darts is SO TOUGH now that going into a game and throw-ing 6.8 going first does not mean you

will win the game at all. Focus on the process of throwing well and the win-ning takes care of itself.

The last piece of advice - people need to remember that it is just a game…to most people. For most that play darts, it will NEVER CHANGE THEIR LIFE! If you get focused on thinking it will, I can guarantee it will cost you things in your life. I have done a lot in the game of darts but I can sit here and tell you way more things I missed out on or gave up to do what I have done. I have seen the world and made a bunch of cash but looking back… I wish I had gone fishing more. So even though we should all strive to play bet-ter and do the work it takes, just do not get all caught up in the DREAM that you are going to be the next great one. Enjoy darts for what it is… a game that allows you to meet others and have a good time with friends.

The PDI Dart League players all pitched in on November 3rd to raise money for Nicole Galla and her Mother in Law, who is fighting cancer.

A dart tournament as well as a 50/50 raffle were held at Marinos and a total of $545 was raised for Nicole.

Nicole was blown away by the support and commented after the event, “Thank you ALL SO much. My mom-n-law was so thankful, shocked, happy and without words that everyone has done what they did with sacrificing their own time, family, weekend night, money and so much more for someone they don’t even know.

She said it was perfect timing as Money was short this month for bills and food that it will help her this month and a little in December ;-) I can’t even express to all of you what it means to me what you’ve all done for me ;-) thanks Diane and Dennis and Pdi teams! I love you all”

Dart Players Walk For The Cure

Eleven of the Valley’s most giving dart players came together in November to walk in the Susan G. Komen Three Day Walk on November 8th - 10th.

It was more than just these eleven volunteers who made this fundraiser a suc-cess for the local dart players. The entire dart community banded together at fundraisers in the months leading up the walk.

Bullshooters, Jimbo’s and Toso’s all held fundraisers where members of the community helped raise the funds for the volunteers at their 60 mile walk.

All told, the entire team of Kriss Austin (captain), Lisa Milburn, Jeremy Mil-burn, Chris Butler, Tash Abeyta, Lisa Yee, Barbie Firkus, Gloria Varela, Mallory Medina, Alison Rogers and Lexi Reyes raised $25,873 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure charity.

While all of the volunteers recuperate from the weekend, plans are already un-derway for everyone to walk again next year.

Chris Carpenter & Mark Rocha completed an undefeated run through a field of fourteen teams to win Kitty’s November 12 & Under 9-Ball event on November 17th.

Carpenter & Rocha defeated Pete Williams & Chris Negrin 7-5 to take the hot-seat, but that would not be the last of Williams and Negrin that Chris and Mark would see.

On the one loss side, Don Stillings & Mike Atma defeated tournament director John Walsh & Joseph Frias 7-3, but lost to Williams & Negrin hill-hill after that.

The rematch between Carpenter & Rocha vs Williams & Negrin was a short one, with Carpenter & Rocha winning 7-4 in the first set of the finals.

Chad Barber Wins One Pocket MadnessChad Barber is quickly earning a reputation as one of the top bar table players in the valley. Add one pocket to his list of credentials, as he scored a come-from-behind victory at Bullshooters’ One Pocket Madness event on November 24th.

Barber lost to Tucson’s Joe Watson in the second round, but came back with a vengeance on the one loss side.

Barber scored four straight 2-0 wins on the left side of the board, including wins over Bernie Pettipiece and Watson.

After Tres Kane lost to Gus Briseno for the hot-seat, Barber eliminiated Kane 2-1 to set up the match vs Briseno in the finals.

The finals started with Gus taking a 2-0 lead, but Barber came back to tie things at 2-2. Barber had a chance to put the final match away early, but missed a cut shot on his last ball. Briseno then took control and ran down to both players needing one ball. When Briseno jawed the final ball in his hole, Barber opted for the win instead of the safe play and banked a ball length of the table to his pocket for the win.

Lervold Defends 7 & Under Crown

Eric Lervold won his second straight 7’s & Under event at Kitty’s on November 10th, but it wasn’t smooth sailing early in the event.

Lervold played for the hot-seat, but lost the match to BBQ 7-5.

Ricky Jones was trying to mount a comeback on the left side of the board after losing to Lervold in the final four on the winners side. Jones had wins over Steve Maguire and Larry Tung, before his shot at redemption against Lervold on the one loss side.

The match between Jones and Lervold was a see-saw affair with Jones taking an early 3-1 lead, only to see Lervold won four straight games for a 5-3 lead. Jones came back to tie things at 5-5, but Eric took the lead back at 6-5. The next game saw Jones scratch on an 8-ball and loss the match 7-5.

While the first match between Lervold and BBQ was a competitive one, the double elimination final match saw Lervold seemingly take away BBQ’s will to win as Lervold cruised to wins in both sets and his second straight tournament win.

Lervold earned $230 for first, while BBQ settled for $90 for second place.

Lacey & Smith Win Big at Kittys

Justin Smith & Eric Lacey made their way through a power packed field of 31 teams to win Kitty’s November 15 & Under Scotch Event.

The field for this event was full of top players, and it was Smith & Lacey who scored a dominating 8-3 win pver Joe Wiley & Ray Shaban for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Chris Carpenter & Eric Lervold were laying waste to the left side of the board. After a hill-hill win over Pete Gresh Sr & Jack Mayer, Carpenter & Lervold scored lopsided wins over Ebony Kelly & Travis Jackson, and Steve Henderson & Joseph Farias.

Chris & Eric’s run was finally brought to a halt by Wiley & Shaban in the semi-finals in a hill-hill match.

The final match (which didn’t end til after 5am) went to Justin & Eric 7-4 for the tournament win.

Tidbits You Must Know

By Jerry BriesathBCA Master Instructor

In this issue, we are going to give you some things to think about that can help your game. Believe it or not, most amateur pool players that play regularly aim as straight as the pros. They get into their shooting position, take a few warmup strokes, and when they’re doing this nothing is moving except their eyeballs and the stroking arm, and then as they stroke through the cue ball, their head starts lifting up. Some lift up one inch and some players lift their head 12 inches as they are stroking through the cue ball. This head movement is disastrous to accuracy be-cause moving the head moves the shoulders which in turn moves the shooting arm at the worst possible time.

Train yourself to not move your head for at least one sec-ond after the cue ball is struck. Missing less is what the game is all about and this will defi-

nitely help.

When your opponent is shooting, be sure to watch every movement he or she makes at the table. Watch how the balls change position, be alert to where the eight ball is at all times and, of course, watch for fouls. When you get back to the table, you will be more aware of where to start to run the balls off and win the game.

Chalking up is a little bit like breath-ing. It’s something we do automatical-ly without thinking about it. We do it every shot without even looking at the tip as we are applying chalk and most of the time this is okay.

But anytime you miscue, you must learn to look at the tip and definitely find the brown mark that a miscue leaves on the edge of the tip and apply chalk generously.

Play smarter - Miss Less - Jerry

Deli Weekly SplitDeli Sports Bar had a 32 player field for their 9’s & Under 8-Ball event on November 24th. Rich-ie Daniels - from Prescott - played Josh Edgar - a new comer to this tour-ney - and Josh won 2-1 while Aaron Purdy and Al Post played and Al won 2-1 to setup the hotseat match between Josh and Al.
