separated from one another. Jakob Bronski, a young Jewish man, took a shine to two youngsters, Melanie and

From the Rabbi’s Desk Hanukkah has a special hold on all Jews. And I believe that it’s not just because of its proximity to the non-

Jewish holiday season. I think there is something for everyone in the holiday and its traditions.

Very young children are fascinated by fire. The story of the miracle of the flame, which burned for eight days,

carries an immediate impact on them. But I think there’s something in that story which can appeal to people of

all ages.

In the oldest records of the Maccabean victory, there is no mention of this so-called miracle. The initial

legends stressed the military prowess of the Maccabees. The legend of the oil burning for eight days came to

the fore some 300 years AFTER the recapture of the Temple and the festival of rededication.

The rabbis chose to emphasize the miracle because they were great pacifists. They had seen too many

examples of attempts at armed rebellion resulting in great destruction. Instead, they wanted to emphasize

dedication (the literal meaning for the word "Hanukkah"), not warfare. In so doing, they sought to stress the

difference between our people and all others: Other people might trust in the power of arms, but that would

never insure their survival. Our people would trust in God's spirit, and in the process, survive.

Hundreds of years after the initial legend, the medieval rabbis proposed a Midrash on a Midrash: They asked

why Hanukkah should last for eight days; if the oil lasted seven days longer than expected, then there was no

miracle on the first day. They then provided the answer that the miracle of the first day was the fact that the

Maccabees lit the oil in the first place. It was an act of hope, performed even when it seemed futile.

Thus, we see a second--even greater--miracle performed within the first, more obvious one–the ability to act

with hope, even when all hope seems to be gone. Perhaps this message is so subtle that it is hardly even

noticed. But the message gets across, with a meaning for many different people:

~People with addictions: When they get sick and tired of getting sick and tired, there is a reason to start over,

to walk the road to recovery.

~Anyone who undergoes serious illness or surgery: It's not the end of your life, but rather the beginning of a

new phase of life. Our capabilities are diminished, but we can still live and function with them.

~People in troubled relationships: Love and marriage need tune-ups; communication and understanding do not

happen on their own. When we find ourselves in times of crisis, there are ways and means to bring these

precious relationships back on track.

~People who’ve lost their youthful idealism: The scars of experience need not rob us of our idealism. Indeed,

it can lead to pragmatism that will help us accomplish what, in our youthful naiveté, we could not do.

Hanukkah can speak to people in every stage and situation in life. As children, we remember a simple lesson--

that of fantastic miracle. As adults, we can learn of an even greater miracle--the ability to act with hope, even

when hope seems to be gone. If we can learn this lesson, we learn new meanings for the second blessing which

we recite on this holiday: Praised is God...who performed miracles for our ancestors in days of old, and who

continues to perform them for us at all times.

Happy Hanukkah!

Rabbi Moshe Saks

DON’T LET THE LIGHT GO OUT

Last year for my December bulletin article I wrote about the connection between the music of the 18th century composer Handel and Hanukkah. This year I am contemporizing the association between secular music and Hanukkah by some 300 years, with reference to one of the most powerful and popular songs of Hanukkah – the song ‘Light One Candle’ by Peter Yarrow of Peter Paul And Mary fame. Yarrow wrote the song in 1984 when he was going to perform in a Christmas concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall, which also happened to be the 3rd night of Hanukkah. Concerning his Jewishness, Yarrow said, “…the importance of that moment of finding a sense of togetherness, is for me a very Jewish concept…It’s turning the sadness of the world into the exposition of possibility, of caring, loving, saving the world.” In 1970 Yarrow wrote in ‘Weave Me the Sunshine,’ “They say the tree of loving grows on the banks of the river of suffering.” These thoughts of Yarrow which motivated the song Light One Candle and some of his other songs, are reminiscent of Jewish values such as ‘tikkun olam – repairing the world’ and from the Torah in the Book of Devarim/Deuteronomy which 5 times warns us about ethical treatment of others because we were slaves in Egypt and know what it is like to be treated unfairly. In fact who more than us understands better Yarrow’s reference to “the river of suffering”? Yarrow states that he believes prayer is about “…empowering, sticking up for what you believe in the face of the common current...a gentleness and generosity of spirit, manifest being in the service of something you believe in, and about translating these things into the way people their love for one another.” So this year as you light your Hanukkah candles, think of Yarrow’s poignant thoughts that motivated this and other of his songs, as relevant as ever for us as Jews, as Americans, all Americans, for Israelis or wherever in the world freedom, justice and human dignity are threatened. We will include this song in our own Hanukkah celebration on Sunday December 9th at 11am. (included here is only the 1st verse) Light one candle for the Macabee children With thanks that their light didn’t die Light one candle for the pain they endured When the right to exist was denied Light one candle for the terrible sacrifice Justice and freedom demand But light one candle for the wisdom to know When the peacemaker’s time is at hand Chorus Don’t let the light go out It’s lasted for so many years Don’t let the light go out Let it shine through our love and our tears…

Wishing you all a wonderful Hanukkah holiday. May the candles shine brightly for you and spread their warmth and cheer not only through the 8 days of Hanukkah but all through year 2013. Hazzan Ivor Lichterman

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

Many exciting events continue to keep us busy at the B’nai Israel Religious School. November started out with

our seventh graders choosing a mitzvah project. They chose to have a book drive and bake sale to benefit chil-dren in need of books. They did a fabulous job of organizing, baking, promoting, collecting books and selling

delicious baked goods.

The Northwest Community Book Fair held at Shomer Emunim was an enlightening experience for all. The

youngest students heard a wonderful story by Laurel Snyder, called Good night, laila tov. Doni Zasloff Thomas rocked out with our 4th -6th graders singing popular Jewish children’s songs. She also shared her Get Cooking! A Jewish American Family Cookbook with the students. Our 7th-10th grades had the opportunity to view the moving documentary Race to Nowhere and have an enlightening discussion with Jennifer Dubow, LISW.

We would like to thank the first of our guest speakers, Louis Wilson, for discussing death and dying with the

tenth graders.

Nick Thanasiu and Noah Hupp have been working diligently with our students weekly to learn new songs for

our Family Friday Night Shabbat Service and Dinner. We hope to see all of you there!

We are also looking forward to our B’nai Israel Hanukkah Celebration on Sunday , Dec 9th at 11:00am. We will

have a sing a long led by Cantor Lichterman, delicious latkes and more!

Dear Congregants,

Principal Kim Brody and the entire staff of the new Congregation B’nai Israel Religious School thought that you would like to learn about the exciting things going on this year. We intend to send updates to the community so that you may all see - just as the excited kids in our program have seen - the dynamic program that they and the Education Committee have created for our precious future.

The New Torah Tots Program, for ages 2 ½-4 years, has learned about the Jewish Holidays, prayers,

the Hebrew Letter of the Week, and have weekly music class, art, and library time. They also had

a special visit from the Toledo Zoo Van.

Torah Tots – Kitah Alef, for ages 5-6 years, have been learning sounds and recognition of Hebrew

letters and Hebrew vocabulary, been making life-size cut outs of what makes me Jewish and are building

their own siddurim. Consecration for our kitah alef class is on March 9 at the Family Shabbat Service.

Kitah Gimmel, for ages 7-8 years, are actively learning the alef bet, conversational Hebrew, and tefillah,

through games and practice. They attend twice a week and are building their pre-b'nai mitzvah siddurim.

Kitah Daled, for ages 8-9 years, are expanding their knowledge of Hebrew, Judaics and tefillah by

working on a 20-ft Jewish history time line. They attend twice a week and are building their pre-b'nai

mitzvah siddurim.

Kitah Vav, for ages 10-12 years, are focusing on the Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience and making Judaism

relevant to their everyday lives. They visited the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Detroit as part of

Holocaust curriculum, study the weekly parsha with the Rabbi and are taught by the Cantor. They attend

twice a week.

Kitah B’nai Mitzvah, for ages 12-13 years, are expanding their knowledge of prayer as well as

conversational Hebrew, traveled to the Holocaust Memorial Museum with Shomer Emunim, and are in

weekly Bar/Bat Mitzvah training with Cantor Lichterman. The 7th and 8th grade girls participate in Rosh

Chodesh program with their friends from Shomer Emunim, and the 7th and 8th grade boys planned, made

and served lunch for more than 250 people at the Cherry Street Mission with both schools bringing in

food donations.

Hebrew High School, for ages 13-15, teaches conversational Hebrew through basic sentences and

grammar in preparation for the trip to Israel in June. They discuss Middle Eastern politics at high level

and are covering Miamonides’ 13 principles of Judaism. The 9th and 10th grade students met with Israel

Ambassador Ettinger.

Confirmation Class, for 10th graders, is joining for the first 15 weeks with Shomer Emunim and learning

about various topics such as comparative religion, Judaism and the Law, Death and Dying, special needs

individuals, and Russian Jewry through special guest speakers and field trips.

We are encouraged by the enthusiastic response we are receiving from our students and their parents to B'nai Israel Religious School, and we wanted to share it with you.

- Meira Zucker, Kim Brody and the entire Religious School Staff

The sensational a cappella group of Yeshiva University students promises a afternoon of spirit and inspiration that

has brought audiences around the world to their feet.

About the MaccabeatsIn the fall of 2007, a few students at Yeshiva University realized that Jewish collegiate acappella groups had been formed on almost every college campus with a substantial Jewish student community – except for YU. To fill this gap, the Maccabeats, YU’s all-male a capella group, was formed. The Maccabeats have since performed all around the country, from New York’s Madison Square Garden, to Los Angeles and everywhere in between.Strongly committed to the philosophy of Torah u-Madda, the integration of traditional and secular wisdom, the Maccabeats perform an eclectic array of Jewish, American, and Israeli songs.
