From the Desk of the Grand Knight Jim Laria
Brother Knights, family, and friends,November was a busy but productive
month. So many wonderful and selfless acts performed by our family. Over 100 Knights and their families attended our tenth anniversary dinner. We were honored having both Fr. Bob and Fr. Cromwell there as well as our State Advocate Don Kahrer and his wife, and our Charter Grand Knight Paul Gonzales and his family.
There was the outreach to Special Olympics, the State Bowling tournament coordinated by Brother Joe and Sister Audrey Nowicki and participated in by twenty-two Knights and their families.
Faithful Navigator, SK Bob Britten, with the assistance of numerous brother Knights fed over 300 Thanksgiving dinners to needy families. Special thanks to all the Brothers and their participating families for the gifts of time, talent, and treasure; thanks, too to Brother George Ludwig for the dozen turkeys he got donated. There was so much giving that the Council was far below budget. Next year we aim higher.
November also saw Brother Don Morrissey and his wife step up to head the “Coats for kids” drive. The Council bought two cases this year, but dozens more are being donated by the Knights and the Parish, and are being collected by Brother Don and Kay.
In November, we also saw nine of our Brother Knights exemplified into the Fourth Degree. Congratulations to all. I was fortunate in attending a 4th Degree welcoming seminar put on by Brother SK Don Gelinas. Well done Brother Don!
December promises to also be a busy month, but a month for the family of Knights to get together in a spirit of camaraderie as we await the coming of our
Savior. Through an anonymous donor, we have $250 in gift certificates (food) for the poor.
We start December 1st with the Clermont Parade. All parts of the Order should participate. The Color Corps of the Assembly will be marching, joined by those Council Brothers and Squires who will be distributing Tootsie Rolls along the route. Those that cannot walk the two miles should be on hand as spectators along the route. If you are not in Regalia, wear your Council shirt! The Parade starts at 1:00 PM. Marshaling is at 12 noon and we are in spots #70 and 71.
The next day, December 2nd is our joint Council/Assembly Picnic at Hickory Point Park from 12 noon on. That is followed by our regular business meeting December 6th and our Annual Christmas Party for Knights and their families December 15th; Children in the afternoon and adults in the evening. I’m looking forward to December. God Bless!
Have a BLESSED, HEALTHY, and MERRY CHRISTmas!!!
Fraternally,Jim Laria, GK "

Worthy Officers and Brothers All:Happy Advent and Merry Christmas! The
wonderful thing about being in a Catholic organization such as the Knights of Columbus is that I don't have to be politically correct and say "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings". In fact, I've decided that I'm NOT going to do those things this year. As our campaign says, "Keep Christ in Christmas", I intend to do that as well. For in all honesty, if someone wishes me a "Happy Hanukkah", I would not be offended at all. It is the joyous holiday spirit that matters and I don't need to be P.C. to convey that.
Advent is the beginning of the Church's liturgical year and the one-year anniversary of the introduction of the 3rd edition of the Roman Missal. Have you all gotten used to "And with your spirit" yet? Advent is a season of waiting and anticipating the celebration of the arrival of the Christ child. It's also a time for good food, decorations, Christmas trees, lights, cards, family gatherings and Santa Claus (who brings with him a whole different sense of anticipation). All of these things make this time of year very special indeed, but it is the arrival of Christ that is the moment that makes this season truly magical.
Moving on to what's going on in the Council, I want to congratulate all of the men who made 4th degrees this past month. I am proud of all of you who have can now don the Sword of Christopher Columbus and call themselves "Sir Knight". I look forward to seeing you at the next Assembly meeting in January!
On an entirely different note, I would like to invite my fellow Brother Knights to the Clermont Middle School Band holiday concert performances. For those of you who are new, I am the Director of Bands at Clermont Middle and we have a really great group of students there that work hard to present very musical programs. The "Flight of Sound" Jazz Ensemble concert is December 11th and the Beginning and Symphonic Band concert is December 18th. Both of these concerts are in the auditorium at Clermont Middle, both begin at
7 PM and both are free and open to the public. I hope some of you can make it!
May the excitement of the coming of the infant Jesus fill your hearts with Christmas cheer. From the Venezio family to yours, have a very Merry and Blessed Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.
Vivat Jesus!Allen

Well the elections and the voting are over
and we did not make much progress in
Florida or the nation addressing the issues of
abortion and freedom of religion. Some may
be saying that the battles are over: however
they are not. There are still a number of law
suits going forward that address the Health and Human Services ruling on religious
institutions and organizations providing
health insurance to their employees when the
insurance must provide services that violate
the beliefs of the religious entity. The Diocese
of Miami joined in one just last month. Lest
you think this is only a Catholic issue I refer
you to the Feb 2012 congressional hearings
where the USCCB’s testimony was “joined by
the President of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, a distinguished orthodox
Rabbi and officials and professors of several
Protestant institutions of higher learning.”
So keep the prayers coming that our
nation’s courts- especially the Supreme
Court- realize that this ruling violates the
First Amendment of Freedom of Religion.
The Knights are still engaged in these efforts
to over throw the ruling so watch for articles
on the web and in the Knightliner. As a source of info you can go to the Orlando Diocese web
site and under social justice find a number of
good articles on this subject and on pro-life
overall. I encourage you to become
acquainted with them and this site.
Also it is not too early for us to start
planning for the Annual March for life that
occurs in Washington DC and, nearer to home, St. Augustine in March of 2013. It
would be great if we – Council and Assembly-
could join those marching for Life next year.

Supreme and State Council News
Help in the Wake of DevastationIn the wake of devastation left along the New Jersey
and New York coasts by Hurricane Sandy, members of Msgr. Joseph F. Dooley Council 4361 in Mingo Junction, Ohio, are collecting canned goods, water and clothing for
families who lost so much to the storm. In an article posted on WTOV News 9 website, council member Lou Kakascik said “The Knights of Columbus isn’t just about a banquet hall. It’s about giving to the community. We’re
about charity, unity and fraternity.” It’s that attitude that is driving the council’s efforts in reaching out to members of the community, to schools and to local businesses to collect
anything that can be of use to those in the area destroyed by the hurricane. The council is also looking for a truck that members c an use to deliver collected items to a food
bank that serves New Jersey and New York. The Supreme Council announced on Thursday that it
was making an immediate $100,000 donation, giving $50,000 each to the state councils of New York and New
Jersey to assist in local relief efforts in those hardest-hit jurisdictions. On Monday, the Supreme Council began disbursing the funds received via online donations, and an
additional $75,000 will now be distributed with $25,000 going to Connecticut, New York and New Jersey respectively.
Our Priests and Religious, an Open Letter
of Appreciation. As we read St. Paul's many letters we are reminded
that though St. Paul was an apostle, he was first and most
importantly a pastor. As a pastor he considered the daily concern for people in his congregation to be as difficult to bear as being beaten or being shipwrecked. And, as you might expect, this is true of all our Priests and religious.
It is obvious that our Priests love each of us, are concerned for us, pray for us, and think about us. That is what we see. But that is not all there is.
Our Priests and religious walk with us in ways we can't understand. The concern for us is so deep and so powerful that thoughts of us often keep them up at night. They read
the newspaper and watch TV with us in mind. They worry that we will read the latest new book and be led astray
from the truth. Their emotions rise and fall every time someone goes to hospital. They grieve with those who mourn or are in distress and rejoice with those who receive a new beginning.
A Priest moves from a funeral to a wedding rehearsal as a professional. He is outwardly dignified showing just the right emotion for the occasion. But inside he is haunted
by the grief of a family, and overwhelmed with excitement for the young couple to be married. He urges the couple toward fidelity and faith and shepherd's the grieving family
through anger, resentment, denial, and grief. And he carries all of those emotions and all of that concern around with him every day.
In our lives we typically endure one or two significant
events at a time. We might change jobs, get married, attend a funeral, have money problems, struggle to hold our marriage together, or love a rebellious child.
But a Priest experiences each and every one of these things every day. He is concerned for the marriage in trouble. He desperately wants to relieve our financial
struggles. He grieves with us over our troubled teenager. He rejoices with us when we find a new job. He experiences all of these things each day because he is so burdened for each of us. Our pain and our joys become
his because he cares for us so much.Today we celebrate our appreciation for our Priests
and religious. We of course appreciate them for all they do
for us. But St. Paul in 2 Corinthians reminds us that what we see doesn't compare with the intense concern they have for each of us.
I would like to say, 'Thank you’ to our Priests and religious. We genuinely appreciate everything we see you do for us. But even more, thank you for caring so much that you take our burdens as your own.

Special Olympians came from all over the State of F lorida to participate.
I am pleased to announce that Councfil 13240 was well represented with approximately 22 Knights and

A good time was had by all and the true meaning of charity and service was experienced by the repeat

I thought I would talk a little about St. Nicholas, since it falls on the s a m e d a y a s o r upcoming meeting. His feast day has been c e l e b r a t e d o n December 6th since about the 5th century.C i t i e s w i t h s t r o n g German influences tend to celebrate St. Nick's Day on a scale similar to St. Patrickʼs day for the Irish. Many children celebrate St. Nicholas Day by putting their shoes outside their bedroom doors on December 5th. It is tradition that during the night, after St. Nicholas has arrived, they will find their shoes filled with gifts and sweets. In France, he was known as Pere Noel; in England, Father Christmas; and in the Netherlands, Sinter Klaas. Early Dutch settlers to new York brought the tradition of Sinter Klaas to the U.S, which eventually became known as Santa Claus.Little is known of St. Nicholasʼ life, except that he was the Catholic Bishop of Myra, Turkey and lived during the 4th century. He was born a Greek, was believed to be an only child of wealthy parents, and at age 17 became a priest. If time permits, I will show a short K of C video for the Good of the Order.

Four parts of retirement: Phase four
Okay, if you’ve been following along in my articles, you’ve read about the first phases
that lead to retirement. Protection and
accumulation of savings are the first time,
followed by de-accumulation of those funds
while making them last.
The final phase is care. At some point, at
some age (hopefully a very advanced age), you
will need to slow down. You will no longer be
able to care for yourself. At that point, you
will need to have assets available to provide much needed care, either at home or in a care
facility.
As you probably know, the cost of care
continues to rise. I cannot quote you a
number here (I could give you specific details
in a face-to-face meeting), but the nationwide
average grows by leaps and bounds. How do
you plan to cover these costs? Government
programs might not be available, or might
require you to spend down your assets leaving your family with little.
The best way to handle the cost of care in
the future is to plan ahead today. The Knights
of Columbus offers long-term care insurance
that can cover at home or facility care
costs. And our product is backed by the
financial strength of the Order. It has many benefits and our premiums are competitive
with any other company.
T h e K n i g h t s o f C o l u m bu s – t h e
organization you trust – is in a position to
help you with every phase. Life insurance,
disability insurance, guaranteed retirement
plans that turn into guaranteed income
streams when you retire, and long term care.
There is no reason to go elsewhere as you
prepare for the four phases! Contact me today to schedule a meeting.
