Deeper learning is the ability to master

rigorous academic content through the

application of higher-order skills, including

critical thinking and problem solving,

communication, collaboration, learning how to

learn and the development of an academic

mind set.

Deep Learning

Authentic engagement in real world

challenges. It is the ability to master and

leverage existing content knowledge,

making links to re-interpret and create

new meaning.

The skills and knowledge students will need to

succeed in a world that is changing at an

unprecedented pace.

Deeper learning prepares students to master

core academic content, think critically and

solve complex problems, work collaboratively,

communicate effectively, and learn how to

learning (for example, self-directed learning).

Deeper learning is an outcome that results from

the self-directed transfer of the C’s to the

students understanding of a concept’s meaning.

The deeper learning outcome is made evident by:

1. the mastery of core and complex content,

2. the construction of academic and

entrepreneurial mindsets, and

3. increased proficiency in the C’s.

Deeper learning is a process that enables students to

become more proficient at developing the fullest

possible insights into the meaning of curricular

content relevant to college and careers in this

century.

This process is made possible by students’ increased

proficiency as self-directed, critical thinkers who

apply their thinking, problem solving, collaborating

and communicating skills so they become more

effective masters of the curricular content.

The combination of:

1- a deeper understanding of core academic

content,

2- the ability to apply that understanding to

novel problems and situations, and

3- the development of a range of competencies,

including people skills and self control, is

called deeper learning.

Problem Solving

3. Collaboration

4. Effective Communication

5. Self-directed Learning

6. An “Academic Mindset”

Deeper learning is “a set of competencies students

must master in order to develop a keen

understanding of academic content and apply their

knowledge to problems in the classroom and on the

job.”

Deeper learning is what students do when they learn for

understanding. The process occurs when students' minds are

engaged in critical or creative thinking and problems solving so they

can learn content a mile deep and only inches wide. In formal

instruction, it happens when teachers (a) create conditions and (b)

select 4Cs strategies that enable students to critically think,

creatively problem solve, collaborate and communicate in more

complex ways (or what Bloom called "higher order"), about the

immediate subject matter. As a result, students are self-driven to

transfer those skills as competencies across their curriculum and

into life situations beyond the school walls.- J. Bellanca

Deep learning is facilitated through questioning. Rather than giving answers, adults help teens become good learners by helping them identify

questions that pique their curiosity. When we help young people make associations between what they are studying at school and the world outside of the classroom, they learn that everything in the universe is

connected, that learning is an endless lifelong process.

Most adults know that learning occurs when we are willing to risk failure. With today’s focus on high-stakes testing, many parents protect teens from

failure. With caring and encouragement, adults can help young people learn from mistakes in ways that facilitate learning.

Learning from experience, not just from books, is one of the best ways to give youth the skills they need for living, working, and learning in the 21st

Century. Service-learning during the teen years provides experiences that nurture critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to see the world as an interconnected community. This type of learning can lead to feelings of gratitude, compassion, kindness, and appreciation for life—

positive virtues that help young people thrive as adults.

Simply stated, deep learning involves thecritical analysis of new ideas, linking them toalready known concepts and principles, and leadsto understanding and long-term retention ofconcepts so that they can be used for problemsolving in unfamiliar contexts. Deep learningpromotes understanding and application for life.In contrast, surface learning is the tacitacceptance of information and memorization asisolated and unlinked facts. It leads tosuperficial retention of material forexaminations and does not promote understandingor long-term retention of knowledge andinformation.
