Unfortunately, abandoned and mistreated animals in Puerto Rico are common. However here in Rincón, animals get a second chance thanks to all our amazing animal rescue groups, such as Defensa Animal de Rincón, ARF, Barks of Hope and the many private citizens that have dedicated their time and money to rescue countless animals. The following animals have all been rescued by Defensa. Some have a happy ending, and some are still looking for that forever loving home. The following rescues were made possible because of our amazing community of people who support Defensa with their time, money, or simply spreading by the word about the rescued animals.

3 Legs Levi was reported as living on the streets of Aguada, in the Pico de Piedra area. The fact that Levi had only 3 legs was of concern to the neighborhood for a while, but it was when he turned up with injuries all over his face from being

En Puerto Rico, lamentablemente ver animales abandonados y maltratados es algo común. No obstante, aquí en Rincón los animales obtienen una segunda oportunidad gracias a los extraordinarios grupos de rescate de animales como Defensa Animal, ARF, Barks of Hope y a los muchos ciudadanos que han dedicado su tiempo y su dinero para rescatar a un sin número de animales. Los siguientes animales han sido todos rescatados por Defensa Animal. Algunos de ellos tienen finales felices mientras otros aun están buscando ese hogar lleno de amor y perdurable. Los subsiguientes rescates fueron posibles gracias a la increíble comunidad de personas que apoyan a Defensa Animal financieramente y al regar la voz.

Levi, de 3 piernas fue reportado viviendo en las calles de Aguada, en el área de Pico de Piedra. El que Levi tuviera 3 piernas fue por un tiempo un hecho de gran preocupación para los vecinos, sin embargo, no fue hasta que él apareció lleno de golpes por toda su cara luego de haber estado en una pelea callejera que los vecinos comenzaron un proceso para rescatar a Levi. Fue recogido de la calle por Sarah de Happy Trails Pet Sitting quien lo llevo inmediatamente a Animal Medical Clinic. Levi fue llevado posteriormente a su imprescindible hogar de acogida con Ellen, Héctor y su perro Jack. Tomo alrededor de ocho meses el que Levi encontrara su hogar perpetuo con Alexandria

in a street fight that the neighbors started the process to rescue Levi. He was picked up off the street by Sarah of Happy Trails Pet Sitting, who immediately took him to the vet. Levi was given the all-important foster home with Ellen, Hector and their dog Jack. It took about eight months before Levi found his forever home with Alexandria in Wyoming. When Levi was living on the streets, it was reported that he would play with families (and their dogs on the beach), but when it came time for everyone to go home, Levi would just wait outside the gates of the houses, having no family of his own. But thanks to our community, Levi will never wait outside alone again!

Rosie was reported as living around the old Rincón Econo parking lot. She had a horrible skin condition, and apparently she wasn’t sure she wanted to be rescued as many reported her but no one could catch her. It took several weeks before a good samaritan caught her, contacted Defensa and immediately took her to the vet. Unfortunately, he could not foster Rosie when she was rescued in August of 2014, and still to this day of September 2015, Rosie’s next home is questionable. Rosie has been helped by Larry, Myrna, Donna and Michelle but even though she is smart, friendly, free-of-skin-issues (when eating lamb-based dog foods) and good with cats and other dogs, her forever home has not been found, her ending is not yet happy.

Rosie fue reportada viviendo en los alrededores del estacionamiento del antiguo establecimiento del Supermercado Econo de Rincón. Ella tenía una horrible condición en la piel y aparentemente no estaban seguros si ella deseaba ser rescatada ya que muchos la reportaban pero nadie podía atraparla. Tomo varias semanas para que un buen samaritano la atrapara, contactara Defensa y la llevara inmediatamente a Miradero Vet Clinic. Desafortunadamente él no podía acoger a Rosie, esto para la fecha de agosto del 2014 y aún hoy día, septiembre de 2015 el encontrar ese hogar perdurable para Rosie es un asunto cuestionable. Rosie ha sido ayudada por Larry, Myrna, Donna y Michelle pero a pesar de que ella es inteligente, amigable, libre de problemas en la piel (cuando se alimenta de comida para perros basada en cordero) y muy buena con gatos y otros perros su hogar para siempre aún no ha sido encontrado por lo que el final de su historia aún no es uno feliz.

Lobo was reported as “The Sad Dog” living in an abandoned house on the Puntas Bakery road in Rincón. In September of 2014, Jim and Cynthia went to check on Lobo and spoke with the neighbors who said they’d been feeding him beans and rice but couldn’t take him into their home. When they said they had witnessed Lobo hit by a car, it was difficult to not take him immediately to the vet, so they did. Lobo is not a fan of car rides and barked non stop the full 40 minute drive (there and back). But that was the extent of any bad habits. He was immediately foster and loved by Gabi. Lobo was also assessed by Happy Trails Pet Sitting to make sure he wasn’t aggressive with other dogs or cats (which he is not). When Gabi left Rincon in April of 2015, another foster home wasn’t found for Lobo, so he went to live with Jim and Cynthia. Lobo surprisingly fit right into their pack, so he can live an indoor senior lifestyle where he is now until a perfect local home becomes available.

Lobo fue reportado como “El perro triste” viviendo en una casa abandonada ubicada en la carretera de Puntas Bakery en Rincón. En septiembre de 2014, Jim y Cynthia fueron a revisar a Lobo y hablaron con los vecinos. Estos les comunicaron que lo habían estado alimentando con arroz y habichuelas pero que no podían llevarlo a sus hogares. Cuando les informaron que habían visto a Lobo ser golpeado por un coche fue difícil el no llevarlo inmediatamente a Miradero Vet Clinic, así que eso fue exactamente lo que hicieron. Lobo no es un fanático de los paseos en coche por lo que ladro sin parar los 40 minutos que tomo llevarlo y traerlo del veterinario. Pero esa era la magnitud de los malos hábitos de Lobo. Él fue inmediatamente acogido y amado por Gabi. Lobo también fue evaluado por Happy Trails Pet Sitting para asegurarse de que este no fuera agresivo con otros perros o gatos (lo cual no es). Cuando Gabi se fue de Rincón en abril del 2015 no podíamos encontrar otro hogar de acogida para Lobo así que fue a vivir con Jim y Cynthia. Lobo sorpresivamente encajo perfectamente con su grupo siendo capaz de vivir un estilo de vida superior en el interior de un hogar donde actualmente se encuentra hasta que un hogar local y perfecto esté disponible.

This Añasco horse had abscesses, a half detached eye lid, sore feet due to neglect and poor shoeing, thrush deep into his soles, rope lacerations, rope indentions, open wounds and old scars as well as being very malnourished/dehydrated when found in May of 2014. Today, after a year of TLC, MO is healthy enough to ride, and he is enjoying a life free of ropes and halters living on a half-acre of land in Puntas, Rincón. He’s likely one of the sweetest horses you’ll ever meet. Besides eating, his favorite thing to do is to stop and greet people and other animals while out on a ride. Thanks to AMC & Pintos R Us for all their help in rehabilitation, you will now see MO in the free saturday horse classes, helping others to become confident and comfortable with horses, so they too can rescue a MO. He reminds us daily: the best things in life are rescued!

Este caballo de Añasco, encontrado en mayo del 2014 tenía abscesos, un parpado semi desprendido, pies cansados debido a la negligencia y a malas herraduras, candidiasis penetrada en sus cascos, laceraciones provocadas por sogas así como sangrados, heridas abiertas y viejas cicatrices, además de estar muy desnutrido y deshidratado. Hoy, luego de un año de TLC, Mo está lo suficientemente saludable como para ser montado y está disfrutando de una vida libre de sogas y cabestros, viviendo en medio acre de terreno en el barrio Puntas de Rincón. Él es probablemente el caballo más dulce que puedan conocer. Además de comer, su actividad favorita es detenerse a saludar a las personas y a otros animales mientras va de paseo. Gracias a AMC y Pintos R’Us por toda su ayuda en la rehabilitación de Mo. Ahora lo pueden ver en las clases gratuitas impartidas los sábados, las cuales ayudan a otras personas a sentirse confiadas y cómodas mientras trabajan con caballos para que en un futuro ellos también puedan rescatar a un Mo. Él nos recuerda diariamente, que las mejores cosas de la vida son aquellas rescatadas.
