What is Deforestation?

• Deforestation is the permanent destruction of indigenous forests and woodlands. The term does not include the removal of industrial forests such as plantations of gums or pines.

• The land is then converted into a non forest use, which includes quarrying, housing settlements ,areas for agriculture and industrial sites.

Why does deforestation happen?•Commercial logging (which supplies the world market with woods) destroys trees as well as opening up forests for agriculture;• Conversion of forests and woodlands to agricultural land to feed growing numbers of people;•Development of cash crops and cattle ranching (pasture for livestock), both of which earn money for tropical countries;

Why does deforestation happen?

• Clearing land for settlements (because of population growth, over population and urbanization)•Clearing land for quarrying.•Felling of trees for firewood and building material; the heavy lopping of foliage for fodder; and heavy browsing of saplings by domestic animals like goats.

Causes of DeforestationDepends on the country. Example in Brazil the main reason is cattle ranching, Ethiopia is shifting agriculture and in Trinidad and Tobago is quarrying and Illegal logging.

1) Percolation and ground water recharge decreases.2) Floods and drought become more frequent.3) Soil erosion increases.4) Pattern of rainfall changes.5) Land slides and avalanches increases6) Climate has become warmer in the deforested region due to lack of humidity added by the plants.7) Consumption of CO2 and production of O2 is adversely affected.

Effects of Deforestation

8) The future generations are deprived of the benefits of trees and animals.9) Loss of biodiversity, extinction of many species of plants and animals, still not discovered by scientists.10) Shortage of fuel. ( Of wood for fuel and charcoal)

Deforestations effect on the Carbon Cycle

• Forests act as a major carbon store because carbon dioxide (CO2) is taken up from the atmosphere and used to produce the carbohydrates, fats, and proteins that make up the tree. When forests are cleared, and the trees are either burnt or rot, this carbon is released as CO2. This leads to an increase in the atmospheric CO2 concentration. CO2 is the major contributor to the greenhouse effect. It is estimated that deforestation contributes one-third of all CO2 releases caused by people.

Deforestation in Trinidad and Tobago

• Deforestation has cause a lost of biodiversity in the Northern Range of the Island. Numerous species of animals numbers have declined and some have become endanger.

• Trinidad piping guan- Aburria pipile- is a bird endemic and has become endangered.

How to prevent deforestation?• Recycle and buy recycle items.• Reforestation.• Farming practices-Those who plant crops

at a farm can participate in putting a dent in deforestation by rotating crops.

• Tree care-When cutting down trees single out full-grown specimens and spare younger varieties.

•  Coals-As the chill of winter takes over the autumn season, try using coals instead of firewood in your fireplace.

• Become an Advocate- Bye spreading the word about the effects of deforestation.
