    EXECUTIVESUMMARYThisDellVirtualizationReferenceArchitecture(RA)whitepaperdescribesvalidatedarchitecturesforDell|CitrixXenServerDellEditionvirtualinfrastructures.TheVirtualizationRAisintendedtoprovidecustomerswithanexamplebasistoconsider,evaluate,andselecttheDellvirtualizationsolutioncomponentsthatbestfittheirrequirements.Thisdocumentisnotintendedtobeanexhaustivestudyofspecificarchitecturesforeveryenvironment.Foracompleteevaluationofyourdatacentersvirtualizationrequirements,pleasecontactyourDellSalesrepresentative.

    INTRODUCTIONANDSCOPECustomersarefacedwithmanychoiceswhenplanningavirtualizationdeployment.Server,storage,andsoftwareconfigurationscanvarydependingonworkloadandfeaturerequirements.ThispaperproposesseveralsamplevirtualizationarchitecturesbasedonDellsserverandstorageproducts. Architecturesaredivided intothreemaincategories:Small,Medium,andLarge. Thesecategoriesarebasedonthefeaturesandcapacityofeachproduct,aswellasthecomplexityoftheoverallarchitecture.TheSmallarchitecture is designed with simplicity in mind and focuses on providing basic functionality withminimalhardware. Itdoesnotenableadvancedvirtualizationfeatures.TheMediumconfiguration isdesigned to meet the production requirements of small and medium businesses by providingeconomical SAN solutions, enhanced virtualization features, and backup options. Finally, the Largeconfiguration is a fullfeature virtualization solution using redundancy, 1tomanymanagement, highavailabilityandenterpriseclassserverandstorageproducts.Thegoalsofthedocumentareasfollows:

    XenServerDellEditionIntroductionWith the64bitopensourceXenhypervisorat its core,CitrixXenServerDellEdition isapowerfulvirtualization solution that enables efficient resource consolidation, utilization, dynamic provisioning,and integratedsystemsmanagement.XenServerDellEditionhasasmallfootprintand isoptimizedtorunfroman internalflashstorage inDellPowerEdgeservers.DellandCitrixhavepartneredtobringprequalifiedandvirtualizationreadyplatformsfortoday'sdynamicandgrowingdatacenters.

    CitrixXenServerDellEditionFeatures

    FactoryinstalledfromDellCitrixXenServerDellEditionisfactoryinstalledfromDellonselectPowerEdgeservers.Thisreducestheinstallationanddeploymenttimerequiredandsimplifiesthedeploymentprocesstogetyourinfrastructurereadytouse.Withminimalconfiguration,theXenServerhostisavailabletorunvirtualmachines.

    IntegratedsystemsmanagementandmonitoringCitrixXenServerDellEditioncomespreinstalledwithDellOpenManageServerAdministrator.Thisenablessystemsmanagementrightoutoftheboxwithoutanyadditionalneedtoinstallanagentonthehost.

    XenServerLocalConsoleTheXenServerDellEditionincludesanewXenServerLocalConsoleuserinterfacetoenablelocaladministrationofthehost.XenServerLocalConsoleenablesuserstoconfigureandviewhostspecificpropertiessuchasmanagementnetworkconfiguration,localstorageforvirtualmachines,etc.XenCenter,thestandardMicrosoftWindowsmanagementconsolefortheXenServer,isalsoavailable.

    OptimizedfootprintandcontrolledenvironmentXenServerDellEditionisoptimizedforasmallerdiskfootprintandwritestoflashstorage.ThemajorityoftheXenServerDelleditionfilesystemisReadOnlyandthusprovidesatightercontrolovertheXenServeroperatingenvironment.TheXenServerDellEditionhostagentsoftwarehasbeensignificantlyoptimizedtominimizethenumberofwritecyclestotheflashstorage.XenServerwritestoflashstorageonlywhensomethingimportanthaschangedandmustberecorded.Writeminimizationhelpsimprovethelifeoftheflashstorage.

    ImprovedreliabilityRunningXenServerDellEditiononaserver'sinternalflashstorageprovidesimprovedreliabilityoverrunningontraditionalharddisks.Flashstoragedoesnothavemovingpartsandismorereliablethanaharddisk.

    ImprovedXenServerupdatesToimprovereliabilityofsoftwareupgrades,theXenServerDellEditionimagecontainsaprimaryandsecondarycopyoftheXenServerfilesystem.Anytimeanupdateisapplied,thesecondarycopygetsupdatedleavingtheprimarycopyinaknowngoodstate.Thesecondarycopybecomestheprimaryafterasuccessfulupgrade.AnupdatetotheXenServerhostcanbeappliedusingtheXenServerlocalconsoleorXenCenter.
