ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Keith Nelson brings over 19 years of professional experience to technical and complex building enclosure design and failure investigations. He is a Licensed Architect in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia as well as several other jurisdictions and is an ASHRAE Certified Building Commissioning Professional (BCxP). He earned his Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design and Bachelor of Architecture from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He is currently a Voting Member of the ASHRAE 90.1 Envelope Subcommittee, ASTM E06.55 Performance of Buildings and ASTM E06.41 Air Barriers. He has provided training nationally on the topics of Building Science and Enclosure.

DEMYSTIFYING THE THERMAL ENVELOPE WITH THE IECCThe minimum standards for energy use of our new and renovated buildings is tightly defined in our building codes and often misunderstood and misapplied. This presentation will demystify the requirements for designing and constructing the thermal control of the exterior building enclosure, specifically in identifying and selecting one of many compliance paths, defining continuous insulation and understanding the impact of thermal bridging. Our goal is to provide a firm understanding of how to select the best envelope code design approach for a project and understand the nuances of continuous insulation. After attending this presentation, participants will be able to discuss the purpose and definition of the building enclosure; identify the multiple energy code compliance paths within the IECC; discuss the potential opportunities and impacts of selecting each compliance path; and discuss the definition of continuous insulation and the impact of thermal bridging on building enclosure design. This course is approved for 1 AIA HSW CEU.
