Denis Tricks (AM) was born in December 1926, the third child and only son. With his two sisters Bronwyn & Marie they lived their early years in north east country Victoria until his family moved to what is now Bayside, Melbourne.

Denis was a student at Black Rock Primary then Caulfield Grammar where he was a Prefect and Captain of the Football Team. Following school it was 12 months in the, Australian Amy, then 12 months on a family farm, then to Melbourne University gaining a B.Com.

Denis began working with BHAS, then moved to one of Australia’s oldest Stockbroker firms Wil-liam Noall. & Son. It was here that Denis became a respected leader of the community. He became the Senior Partner of the firm, Chairman of the Melbourne Stock Exchange then stepped up to Chair the Associated Australian Stock Exchange, hosting the World Stock Exchange meeting in Melbourne during the 80’s.

Denis’s Leadership contribution did not stop at the Stock Exchange, he had varying roles with the Victorian Arts Centre that included Vice Chair, Hon. Treasurer and nearly 20 years on both the Audit & Finance Committees. He also spent 11 years on the Melbourne University Council in areas of Finance & Investment, chairing the Investment Committee. He thoroughly enjoyed Chairing the Veterinary Science Clinic & Hospital Board at Werribee where a new understanding for horses was developed and still loved to this day. During this busy period of financial leadership Denis was also involved in the John Truscott Foundation and was a director of Ramsey Ware StockLand, Rural Press, Ingot Metals and Selected Investments.

During the 1980’s Denis left stockbroking and became a Horticulturist in Gippsland. This was a 30 year project that he and his wife Priscilla planned built and eventually sold as one of Australia’s leading native flower wholesalers for the Asian Markets. It was during this busy time that Denis was also on the R.I.R.D.C Wildflower Advisory Committee as Chairman.

In 1985, he became the Founding Chairman of the Hugh D. T. Williamson Foundation. A position he held till February 2015. Denis personally knew Hugh, who was the first Hon. Treasurer of The Arts Trust, Denis was the second. During his tenure as Chair over 400 community projects have been guided with his leadership.

During all this time at work Denis & Priscilla had 4 children, Belinda, Sarah, Mathew and Meredith and 12 wonderful grandchildren.

Denis has a strong sense of purpose and can do attitude, which still puts him in good stead today. He is interested in Australia, in particular rural and regional Victoria. When the Victorian Regional Community Leadership Programs approached Denis to establish a scholarship in his name he was extremely humble in accepting. Denis was particularly keen to ensure that this scholarship be available for young people aged between 21-30 who reside in Rural and Regional Victoria.

4 Who is eligible to apply for the Denis Tricks Young Regional Community Leader Scholarship to participate in a Program?

If you live in rural and regional Victoria and aged between 21 and 30 then you are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

Candidates should:

• Be able to demonstrate leadership potential

• Ability to commit the required time and energy to the program and to engage as an active learner

• Show a genuine interest in their community

• Have the potential to commit time and energy to leading their community in the future

What is the application process?

1. Applications are to be submitted online at www. vrclp.com.au and are open from 1st September and will close 15th September

2. The selection panel will shortlist applicants for interview once applications are closed

3. Interviews will be conducted face to face (Melbourne) or via skype in the 3rd week of September

4. All interviewed applicants will be provided feedback, with the successful applicant advised of the panel’s decision to recommend them for the program late September, early October

5. The panel will provide your application, interview outcomes and consent forms to the applicable program

6. If you are successful your preferred program may request you to complete their formal application process before a final decision is made

7. The program will officially notify the applicant if they are successful in acquiring a sponsored place in their program.

The Selection panel will make a recommendation to the appropriate program to consider your place into their respective program. The program will have access to the outcomes of the recruitment process conducted and will determine if there is a place in their program. The programs are highly regarded and generally they receive more applications than places available, so sometimes people miss out.

Each year they select a group of up to 24 people that is representative of their regions. They seek participants that represent a range of professions, ages and geographical distribution. They also look for a range of personal experience, leadership potential and personal attributes amongst their cohort.

No. The Regional Community Leadership Programs are just that … a Community Leader-ship Program. You will undertake the Program over the course of a year (2 years Geelong) from February through to December (except AVCLP and Geelong who run financial year programs commencing in July) and learn through meet-ing, interacting and working with the region’s finest leaders. You will examine the issues impacting your region, and the opportunities for positive change.

Program days examine “best practice” in a number of key themes including:

• Community Development

• Business and Industry

• Agriculture

• Health and Wellbeing

• Tourism

• Rural Change

• Young People

• Understanding Government

• Environmental sustainability

• Social Dislocation

• Arts and Culture

• Positive ageing

The culmination of the Program may include a visit to Melbourne and/or Canberra to meet high profile leaders that are usually inaccessible to those of us living in regional and rural areas. Through interaction with leaders at a local, state and/or national level, you will be exposed to the ethics and values, personal attributes and individual styles of our community leaders.

During our skill development days and our retreats, programs also address a number of skills that are required of a manager and a leader. Some of these include:

• Working with the media

• Emotional intelligence

Are the Regional Community Leadership Programs a Business Management Course?

8 How do I graduate from the Program?

There are no exams, or papers that need to be written, to graduate from a program. What they do insist on however, is an 80% attendance rate, or better, by all participants. This includes attendance at all compulsory events which may include overnight retreats, scheduled program days throughout the Program.

If you are successful in your application you will be provided with the program dates as soon as possible so that every opportunity is provided for your successful completion of the Program.

From time to time special invitations are ex-tended to Program participants and Program alumni to attend exclusive events, dinners, and opportunities to meet with distinguished leaders visiting the region. These events are not com-pulsory but can count towards attendance rates and will be assessed on a case by case basis.

Program cost

The scholarship is provided to the program to fund your place in their program. Any out of pockets expenses such as travel, food (outside of program days), etc. are borne by the participant.
