Prerequisite:
EDUC 1005 Introduction to Educational Psychology
Course Description:
This course provides students with an overview of the school curriculum. It introduces students to the
principles and instruments of assessment commonly used for different key stages. Emphasis is put on
examples drawn from the Hong Kong context.
Aims
Specifically, this course aims
To develop students’ knowledge of the components of a curriculum and the principles behind its
organization;
To enhance their awareness of the process of curriculum development;
To facilitate their examination of the assumptions underlying a curriculum relevant to their
experience;
To develop their ability to explain the principles behind the construction of commonly used
assessment Tools; and
To enhance their ability to appraise assessment tools.

Students work in small groups (each with 3 to 6 members) to discuss questions or issues provided by the instructor. Students may be required to orally report their findings and conclusion. Occasionally, each group is asked to write a simple report for assessment. These activities facilitate students’ knowledge construction through social interaction in class.

The instructor describes and explain various concepts with the assistance of the desktop computer system. PowerPoint slides are frequently used to present ideas. Sometimes, additional information is provided in the form of handouts. Video clips and interactive websites also supplement the instructor’s input. From time to time, one-way lecture is broken up by questions and answer segments.

Students work in small groups (each with 3 to 6
