How many MVR members are awareof The PCA Juniors Program? If Ihad to venture a guess, I would saynot many. As of this writing nomember of the Maumee Valley Re-gion, to the best of my knowledge,is taking advantage of this PCA of-fering. Basically the Juniors Pro-gram is a new offering from PCA forenthusiasts under age 18 that havea PCA active parent. The Juniorsprogram has been created so kidscan enjoy PCA events, learn aboutPorsches, and share the enthusiasmthat runs through the Porsche Clubof America. Once enrolled Juniorswill receive a welcome package thatincludes an age appropriate gift anda PCA badge. The program is stillbeing developed and features will beadded along the way. The goodnews is that there is no cost to par-ticipate. Remember, It’s not just thecars…..and now it’s not just thegrown ups! Visit the PCA websitefor more details.

Now that the summer weather hasarrived and we tend to spend moretime behind the wheel, it’s impor-tant to keep tabs on a few car main-tenance items throughout the hot-ter summer months. Manufacturersare constantly developing andequipping their latest offerings withsophisticated gauges and read outsthat keep the driver well informed. However, these systems should notreplace a good old- fashion visualinspection, from time to time. Hereare a few things to check before tak-ing that trip or heading out to Pa-rade, no matter what the vintage of

your second best gal might be.

Cooling system (cold): Visual in-spection for leaks, squeeze thehoses looking for cracks and softspots, check coolant level.

Tires: Quick check tread depth witha penny, https://www.wikihow.com/Check-Tire-Tread-with-a-Pennyand replace worn tires. Check pres-sures, set to recommended PSIfound on drivers door/manual. Un-der inflated tires reduce mileageand wear quicker.

Brakes: This may be better left toyour mechanic unless you have brakesystem experience. Having a brakingproblem away from home can, andwill, be a proverbial bummer

Oil & filter change: Stay on sched-ule as you amass summertime milesmore rapidly. Always change the fil-ter with the oil. Keep an eye on theoil level, a properly filled crankcasehelps keep your engine runningcool.

Wipers: Replace those worn bladesand keep the windshield clean (bothsides) for the best vision possible. Inaddition, keep a good pair of sunglasses handy.

A closing thought, If you are in needof a product or service that is pro-vided by our newsletter advertisersor our event sponsors, please givethem an opportunity to furnish it toyou. Thanks.

Take care,Barney.

Kentucky Derby Partyby Kim Harris

Ready for the Race

On Saturday evening May 5th, theMaumee Valley Region of PorscheClub of America held their annualKentucky Derby Party. The eventwas hosted by Germain Porsche ofAnn Arbor, and attended by over 50Porsche enthusiasts from northwestOhio and southeast Michigan. EventChairman Kim Harris did anamazing job of coordinating all theactivities, which made the night somemorable. Delicious food wassupplied by club members and alsoby our host, Germain Porsche.

Each year the MVR members choosean area organization to support.

Our choice for this year is the MobilMeals “Weekender” program, whichprovides meals to needy schoolchildren on the weekends. Goodiebaskets, a 50/50 raffle, a “Best Hat”contest, and betting on the Derbyrace raised cash for this localcharity. Proceeds of almost $1,000from this event will help to feedToledo area children this year.Other events scheduled later thisyear will bring in additional fundsfor this same worthy cause. Thishighlights the slogan of the nationalPorsche Club of America, which is“It’s not just the cars, it’s thepeople”.

Our Sunday morning began with mepicking up the order from DunkinDonuts that Lynn setup. We made it

Leather Cleaning Products for Ventilated Seats – 2014 Boxster

Question: Any advice on cleaning leather ventilated seats? Any specificproducts, brushes, etc. appreciated.

Answer: Submitted by Pedro Bonilla. Try not to use products that come in agel or paste. These tend to get into the leather's perforations and will bedifficult to clean. use a leather cleaner and conditioner in liquid form thatyou can spray onto a microfiber cloth and then apply to the leather. If theperforations are full of debris, you can use a strong vacuum to try to suckout the material or you can alternatively blow it in using compressed air.Several of the perforations may require that you use a dental pick or such tophysically open up the perf again.

996 Turn Signal Fuse Keeps Blowing Out – 2004 911 Carrera 4SCabriolet

Question: The turn signal fuse on my '04 C4S keeps burning out.1. replaced the Fuse: Row B, fuse 6 15A2. use signal, shorts immediately3. went to a 20A fuse, then the relay shortedI'm thinking there must be a ground short somewhere but not sure the bestway to trace this out.Any suggestions or ideas?

Answer: Submitted by Bill Burris. Fact: Your diagnosis is 100% accurate, you've clearly got a "circuit fault to ground" that's blowing the fuse. Whereyou're coming up short (no pun intended) is in the repair approach.Increasing the amp rating of the fuse is giving you an expected result -other stuff is burning out: You're lucky it was the relay and not the wireharness itself that took the heat! Let's spend a moment on the theorybehind bulbs and fuses, then launch into a circuit diagnosis.

A bulb is really nothing more than a coil of wire that gets heated up withpower running through it. It doesn't take much, but give the bulb power atthe base and ground the housing then bingo, the bulb lights up. Thefilament is made to take the punishment and isn't consumed in the process- much the same way the heating element in your toaster gets red hot butlasts for years. Power has this funny way of taking the path of leastresistance, so if another path is introduced where the resistance is lower

Technical Q and ABy PCA Technical Committee

(Continued on page 17)

17

June 2018

(like straight to ground instead of through the bulb filament) that's the pathit'll take.

Ok, let's say there was some accident damage and the body shop neglectedto repair the turn signal wire that is now grounding out. The first time youactivate the turn signal, power will run through the circuit, straight toground, attempting to turn the wire harness into a filament (more like thetoaster element) and the weakest link in the circuit will overheat first. Inmost cases, it's the fuse.

So, you can see how putting a bigger fuse in the circuit doesn't repairanything, it just takes longer to heat up and burn through the stronger fuse- except in the case of your turn signal circuit it's the contacts in the turnsignal relay that burned through first.

Now for some diagnosis. You can use an ohm meter to track down the partof the circuit that's giving you trouble since an ohm meter will measureresistance - which in the case of your turn signal will be zero resistancesince you've got power running straight to ground. You know the circuitwith the issue is after the relay (between the relay and the lamp) becausethe relay heated up, so start there. It may be as simple as looking at theback of the turn signal assembly to find the wire is dangling there, right upagainst a supporting bracket!

Early Style Sunroof Problem – 1986 944

Question: I have an early 1986 944. The sunroof will release to allow the liftoff of the panel but the arms that tilt the roof do not function. I hear agrinding noise from the sunroof motor. As it is an early 1986 build it hascables to activate the arms and not the plastic gears used in later 1986builds and subsequent cars. Is the potentially damaged gear in the sunroofmotor replaceable or does the complete motor need to be replaced?

Answer: Submitted by George Beuselin. The sunroof mechanism that youhave in your car is what is in the 944 cars with electric sunroof from modelyears 84 to early 86. The PET for the 82-85 944 cars has a pretty gooddiagram in figure 811-05. The most likely culprit is not the gear attached tothe motor, but rather the center gearbox in the rear of the roof (indicated by#5 in the diagram.) Before you start throwing parts at the car, I wouldsuggest using the diagnostic and the clutch adjustment procedure for theearly sunroof at the Clarks Garage Shop Manual (http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/body-03.htm (link is external)). In thirty years, Ihave not seen the gear on the sunroof motor break. I have seen the clutchbecome maladjusted through wear.
