Wood came to Greene county in 1833, and settled on the farm now owned by his son, John L. Aman Wood was born in the state of Maryland, in the year 1777, and was a son of Stephen and Rachel Wood, natives of Maryland. His father served in the war of 1812. Aman moved, with his parents to Kentucky, where he was married to Sarah Baker, a daughter of David Baker. They were the parents of 14 children - Bennett, deceased; James, deceased; Mahulda and Mahala, twins, deceased; Phebe, deceased; Cynthia, married William R. Rice, who died, and she was again married to James Short; Squire, deceased; Sarah, married George Rice, now deceased, and is again married to Gillespie Lapdice; Aquilla, married Mary Dix; Wilson and Allen, deceased; John L., the subject of the sketch which follows, and one child, who died an infant. Mr. Wood came to Greene county in the fall of 1833, settling in Bluffdale township, on the section where John L. now resides. The town of Woodville received its name from Mr. Wood. Notes for Bennett WOOD:"...Bennett Wood, came to this State and county in 1828, and settled in North Litchfield Township, and was one of the very earliest settlers there. His nearest neighbor was three and one-half miles away, and in this lonely place he lived until his death. He was a devout man, a minister of the Baptist Church, and one of those brave, good men who sacrificed every comfort and ambition in life to assist and console others. There were few then to comfort the sick with spiritual consolation, to perform the marriages or to give Christian burial to the dead. Notes for Allen Baker WOOD:"Although the town never boasted a drug store, Allen Wood was to some extent a dispenser of drugs in this locality." 1879 History p430."Allen B. Wood was a native of Kentucky, and early became identified in agricultural pursuits. He accompanied his parents to Greene County in an early day, the exact date can not now be ascertained, where many of the name in subsequent years bore a prominent part in the growth and development of the county. Allen B. Wood became more fortunately situated in life than many in the West in an early day, although for some little time he worked as a farm hand. In 1850 he was united in marriage to Miss Tryphena Mulberry, by whom he had eight children, four of whom are living: John P., Addie, George, and Judy Ethel. Not long after his marriage, Mr. W. embarked in the grocery and dry goods trade in a small building in what is familiarly known as Upper Woodville, commencing his business on a light capital, save wit and energy, he sprang at once into a successful business career, and in after years became the owner of valuable farm property. He died during the Autumn of 1873, after a long and eventful life, and was laid at rest in the Maberry Cemetery. April 15, 1859, he was united in marriage with Mary J. Marshall, a daughter of Sanford and Mary Marshall, natives of Kentucky. Mr. and Mrs. Wood are the parents of four children - Maxey, died Jan 4, 1863; Letitia, wife of Lualvis Hutchins, living with her father; Rufus, living at home; and Adella, who died in 1869. Mrs. Wood departed this life May 14, 1878, and was buried in the Maberry cemetery. Hutchens, and to them was born two daughters, the only one surviving being Helen, wife of Elden Rathgeber. She leaves also a husband, a grandaughter, a sister, Mrs. Judith E. Andrews, and one brother, Geo. T. Wood of Canon City. Colo. At an early age Mrs. Hutchens united with the Baptist church and until her health failed she was an active worker in church circles.
