  • designauthorship=capable of writingdesign book ?

  • whydesign authorship?

  • graphic design in Indonesia:

    illiteracy

  • illiteracy1. the inability to read or write.

    2. lack of knowledgein a particular subject; ignorance, unawareness.

  • go to nearest bookstore, look in graphic design shelves

    what do you find?

  • most of them:1. software tutorial2. technical design application3. design motivation

    are we that desperate?

  • what topics do you discusswith your designer friends?

  • design authorship?

  • role of designermodern. designer as neutral transmitter of information vs. postmodern. designer as participant in the delivery of the message, not just a transmitter.www.graphicdesigntheory.net, lecture 13: Design Authorship

  • designauthorship=capable of writingdesign book

  • designauthorshipcapable of writingdesign book

  • so, what is design authorshipactually?

  • authora person who invents, originates, or causes something.

  • developing a signature approach to visual design.

  • cross discipline collaboration

  • generating content, becoming a design writer or critic

  • designers voice, self initiated project.(designer as author, producer, activist, entrepreneur, etc.)-

  • Design authorship might be best defined by what it is not. It is not a style (grunge is a style). It is not a medium (print is a medium). It is not a technique (calligraphy requires a technique). It is not a specialization (packaging design is a specialization). It is not a genre (photo-montage is a genre). It is not a movement (swiss modernism is a movement). It is not a philosophy (phenomenology is a philosophy).

Steven McCarthy, The Designer as Author, Producer, Activist, Entrepreneur, Curator, and Collaborator, 2013

  • how it looks is as important as what it says.

  • Dead History P. Scott Makela (1990)

  • The Little Book of Shocking Global Facts (2010)

  • First Thing First (1964)

  • Designobserver.net (2003)

  • Visuallyconomic.com (2013)

  • Design authorship may be self initiated, lacking a conventional client, but that does not mean it lacks an audience. Instead of being reactive, it is proactive.

Steven McCarthy, The Designer as Author, Producer, Activist, Entrepreneur, Curator, and Collaborator, 2013

  • the idea of design authorship will continue to evolve with times, as long as it initiates the idea of participation and interaction.

  • be sensitive,be critical,be open.

  • graphic design may not save the world.

  • graphic design may not save the world.

but those who have no statement will take part to ruin it.

  • which designer are you?

  • Perspektif: 19 Desainer Grafis Muda Indonesia

  • is my final project in completing 4 years of formal study of graphic design.

  • at that time, i was in galau phase as a soon to be designer. -what is graphic design actually?does it really matter?

  • i decided that my final project had to be the answer of my galau-ness

  • final project = the most ultimate college project = self directed project = requires strong capability and understanding = field i love the most = multiple pages layout (print)

  • book.

  • graphic design book.

  • there are two options:- redesign- create new one

  • then, here come more options:- graphic design theory- design showcase- graphic design in Indonesia- designers story/profile

  • one more decision to make:

who should be in this book?

  • young indonesian graphic designers.

  • phase: shaping content.

  • interview, read,interview,read,interview,read,... till the 19th person.

  • role of graphic design?good design?form follows function?what is design to you?are you a happy designer?

  • extracting the core.

  • writing the profiles(thanks to ellena!)

  • lesson learned:every designer (in this book) has their own perspective in seeing graphic design.

  • phase: forming direction.

  • research + analyze

  • brainstorm + questioning

  • 1. what is a book?

  • what if its not binded like book in general?

is it still called a book?

  • 2. how graphic tell stories?

  • balancing the role of graphic and text, form and content.

  • design principle:. unity. similarity. harmony. balance. emphasis. so on.

  • 3. what does the book talk about?

  • 19 designers=19 personalities=19 perspectives

  • 4. how to keep it distinctive?

  • role of designerModern. designer as neutral transmitter of information vs. Postmodern. designer as participant in the delivery of the message, not just a transmitter.www.graphicdesigntheory.net, lecture 13: Design Authorship

  • pure objectivity = similarity = monotony

  • 5. how to explore the graphic?

  • membatasi diri dalam sebuah pengkotak-kotakan justru membatasi cakrawala seorang desainer, seniman, atau perupa dalam penggalian ide-ide kreatif

FX Harsono, Desain itu juga Seni Rupa

  • direction:dynamic

  • output

  • is this readable?

  • how about this?

  • and this?

  • probably:- eye candy- random composition- some deep philosophical work

  • function?

  • this project is where i insert myself without putting away its function.

  • this book is addressed to anyone who is passionate in graphic design; eager to learn, analyze, and criticize; and always curious about the field itself.

  • thank you.
