Identity Text written in Urdu and English by three 7th graders. It says that it describes how hard it was to leave their country and come to a new country.
So, what can I do to value my ELs’ cultural diversity?
Turn and talk with those near you about this question.
Let students make passports and have them stamped at various places as they learn.
Think international!
Show and Tell!Ask families of EL students to come in and show artifacts of their country, bring in food, or share about their language, culture and customs.
Use your wall space to promote diversity!
Mark with pins where your ELs are from or what countries you are studying!
Be creative!
Multicultural Reading Night
Where will reading take you? Around the world!Paris, India, NYC, London, Rome, Moscow...
Compare and Contrast What is the same and different about the main characters?What is the same and different about the story line?
Graphic Organizers with sentence frames.
This makes what we are doing very clear.
I leave the labeling blank until we complete it together.
Word BanksHaving word banks available encourages correct spelling. Students also feel good about using new words in their writing.

Consider a self-portrait/all about me/identity project for your students
Talk to your colleagues about an international grade level or school-wide project
