    Components of Blood

    1. Plasma

    is a pale yellowish liquid that isabout 92 percent water. Theremaining eight percent is madeup of a dissolved complexmixture of various substances.These substances are:Soluble or plasma proteins, suchas serum albumin, serumglobulin, fibrinogen, andprothrombin. Fibrinogen andprothrombin play an important

    part in the clotting of blood. Alsopresent are antibodies, whichare involved in fighting diseases.

    Dissolved mineral salts, such as

    chlorides, bicarbonates, andsulfates and phosphates ofsodium and potassium. Allthese occur as ions in theplasma.

    Food substances, such asglucose, amino acids, fats, andvitamins.

    2. Red Blood Cells/ RBC

    red ; cytes means cells ). Itis a circular, flattened, biconcavedisc with the center of the cellthinner that its edge. It is elasticsuch that it can squeeze itselfthrough capillaries smaller thatitself in diameter.

    It picks up oxygen in the lungsand transports it throughout thebody and gathers carbon dioxide

    back to the lungs where it isremoved from the body.

    3. White Blood Cells

    Or called leukocytes (leukomeans white) are colorless anddo not contain hemoglobin.They are larger than RBC andfewer in number.

    It helps the body fight off germsand foreign bodies that entersthe cells. They attack anddestroy germs and foreignbodies when they enter the

    4. Platelets

    Or called thrombocytes are nottrue cells but fragments ofcytoplasm from certain bonemarrow cells. These arefragments of red blood cells that

    play a part in the clotting ofblood.

    It forms blood clot whenever ablood vessel is broken.
