Dr.NadineGaab,Ph.D.MorningKeynoteSpeakerNadineisanassociateprofessorofpediatricsatBostonChildren'sHospitalBostonandtheHarvardMedicalSchool,andamemberofthefacultyattheHarvardGraduateSchoolofEducation.ShereceivedaPh.D.inPsychologyfromtheUniversityofZurichinSwitzerlandanddidpostdoctoraltrainingatStanfordUniversityandMIT.HercurrentresearchwithintheLaboratoriesofCognitiveNeurosciencefocusesonauditoryandlanguageprocessinginthehumanbrainanditsapplicationsforthedevelopmentoftypicalandatypicallanguageandliteracyskills.TheGaablabutilizesstructuralandfunctionalmagneticresonanceimaging(fMRI)aswellasbehavioralmeasurementtools.TheGaablabiscurrentlyworkingonvarioustopicssuchastheidentificationofpossiblepre-markersofdevelopmentaldyslexiainthepre-readingandinfantbrain,theidentificationoftheunderlyingneuralmechanismofcomorbidityofdevelopmentaldyslexiaandattentiondeficithyperactivitydisorder,brainplasticityfollowingsoundandmusicbasedremediationprogramsforreadingandlanguageimpaired,children,theinfluenceofmusicaltrainingoncognitiveandacademicabilitiesandtheneuralcorrelatesoflanguageandreadingdevelopmentacrossthelife-span.
SusanC.LowellSusanC.Lowell,M.A.,B.C.E.T.,aFulbrightProfessorandanadjunctfacultymemberinthegraduateschoolatSimmonsCollege,specializesinliteracyresearchandthediagnosisandremediationofreadingdisorders.Inherreadingandliteracyclinic,Ms.Lowellprovideseducationalevaluation,consultation,andadvocacy.Ms.LowellservedasaVicePresidentoftheBoardofDirectorsofTheInternationalDyslexiaAssociation(IDA)andPresidentofTheNorthCarolinaBranchofIDA.Ms.LowellwasareadingandliteracyconsultantatDukeUniversityandwasappointedtoTheUniversityofNorthCarolinaatChapelHill’sSchoolofMedicineasanEducationalDiagnostician.Ms.LowellservesasanAssociatetotheAdvisoryCommitteeonExceptionalChildrenoftheOfficeofOverseasSchools,U.S.DepartmentofState,workingasareadingconsultantfortheinternationalschools.Ms.Lowellisapublishedauthorandaninternationallyrecognizedexpertonspecificlearningdisabilitiesincludingdyslexia.Shehasbeenakeynotespeaker,symposiumchair,andinvitedspeakeratinternationalandnationalconferences.Ms.Lowellistheco-authoroftheIDApublication,BasicFactsAboutAssessmentofDyslexia:TestingforTeaching.
Dr.MargieGillisMargieisaCertifiedAcademicLanguageTherapistwhobecameinterestedinreadingwhileattheUniversity of Connecticut where she studied with Isabelle Liberman. In 2009, Margie foundedLiteracyHow,Inc.toprovideprofessionaldevelopmentopportunitiesforteachersonhowbesttoimplementresearch-basedreadingpractices intheclassroom.In2010,MargiefoundedtheAnneE.FowlerFoundationtocontinuetheworkofhermentorAnneFowler.TheFoundationsupportsscholarships for teachers to earn their Masters or Sixth Year degree in Reading and LanguageDevelopmentatFairfieldUniversity.Sheistheco-founderandformerpresidentofSmartKidswithLearningDisabilities,theformerpresidentoftheCTBranchoftheInternationalDyslexiaSociety,aboardmemberoftheDyslexiaSocietyofCTandNewAllianceFoundation,andanexecutiveboardmemberoftheAcademicLanguageTherapyAssociation.
WendyNorthWendyNorth’smissionisforeveryteachertounderstandhowtoteacheverystudenttoreadandwrite,andtoensurethatallstudents(withorwithoutlearningdisabilities)readtotheirhighestability.Wendybeganhercareerasaspecialeducationteacherinpre-Kandelementarysettings,andbecametrainedintheOrtonGillinghammulti-sensorystructuredlanguageapproach.Afteradecadeworkingone-on-onewithstrugglingteenandadultreadersatLearningHouseinGuilford,Wendybecamepassionateaboutmakingagreaterimpactbyfocusingonteachingteachers.Sincejoiningtheteamasamentorin2002,shehastrainedteacherstounderstandtheintricaciesofthestructureoftheEnglishlanguage,recognizeandrespectthestagesofreadingdevelopment,havetheknowledgetosuccessfullynavigatepublishedliteracyprograms,andlearnthebestresearchbasedpracticessotheycanreacheverystudent.Wendyhasworkedwithteachersfrompreschoolthroughtohighschoolinurbanandsuburban,public,privateandcharterschools.Thoughexplicit,systematicandthorough,Wendyisneverrote.Sheisespeciallyadeptatrespondingtoindividualsandmeetingthemwheretheyareintheirlearning—assheencouragesallteacherstobewiththeirstudents.WendyisagraduateofSouthernConnecticutStateUniversity,holdingbothB.S.andMastersdegreesinSpecialEducation,thelatterwithaconcentrationinreadingdisabilities.
