It is located along the route of the main line of the Union Pacific Railroad. ` The Union Pacific Railroad reached Big Springs, in then Indian Territory, in June of 1867 and the Chappell area in July. Cheyenne County was organized in 1872 and the area which later became Deuel County was encompassed in the Big Springs precinct. In 1880 this precinct has a population of 99 people. The railroad began selling land in the Deuel County area in 1884 which was the beginning of increased settlement in this region. The original town of Chappell was platted in August of 1884. Big Springs was also platted in that year by the Union Pacific company. Cheyenne County was divided into five counties by a vote on November 6, 1888 with Deuel County being formed of the east one-third of old Cheyenne County. It was again divided in 1910 to form Garden County and as a result Deuel County became the smallest county in the panhandle. From the early population of 99 people, Deuel County gained a peak population of 3,992 in 1930 to a little over 2,400 people at the present time (1980's). The county was named for Harry Porter Deuel, a pioneer railroad man from Omaha, Nebraska. The Deuel County Courthouse Company was formed in 1888 and plans made to locate a courthouse at Big Springs. At an election January 18, 1889, Chappell was chosen as the temporary county seat. A run-off battle was held February 12, 1889 between Chappell, Big Springs, and Froid, resulting in a court injunction against the other opponents filed by Froid. The case continued until a new election was ordered in April of 1894 resulting in the elimination of Froid. A subsequent election

HISTORICAL NOTE

Deuel County is located in the southeast corner of the Nebraska Panhandle, bordered on the east by Keith County, on the north by Garden County, on the west by Cheyenne County, and on the south by Sedgwick Co., Colorado. It is located along the route of the main line of the Union Pacific Railroad. `

The Union Pacific Railroad reached Big Springs, in then Indian Territory, in June of 1867 and the Chappell area in July.

By an election in 1909, Deuel County was consolidated from its original twelve precincts into three, Chappell, Swan, and Big Springs.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The bulk of the records of Deuel County consist of Tax Lists and Assessment records for personal property and real estate valuations in the county, 1889-1975. The collection is divided into nine subgroups: 1) Treasurer's Records, 1888-1972; 2) Assessment Records, 1889-1975; 3) Commissioners Proceedings, 1889-1974; 4) County Clerk, 1874-1955; 5) Register of Deeds, 1893-1951; 6) County Court (no records); 7) District Court (no records); 8) Supt of Schools (no records); and 9) School Districts (no records).
