DEVILS EXTRA PRESENTED BY: Trenton Orthopaedic Group

TRENTON DEVILS (2-3-0-1, 5pts) vs CINCINNATI CYCLONES (1-5-1-1, 4 pts) Game 7 ◦ Friday, November 5, 2010 ◦ 7:00 p.m. ◦ Sun National Bank Center, Trenton, NJ

Devils Take One of Two Shootouts vs. GwinnettTrenton, NJ - The Devils hosted the Gwinnett Gladiators October 28 and 29 at Sun National Bank Center, collecting three out of four possible points. Both contests were decided by shootouts, though a record setting performance between the pipes for Dave Caruso was the highlight of Week 3 for the Devils.

Game 05: Devils Capture Shootout Win vs. GladiatorsIn the Trenton Devils’ 3-2 shootout win over the Gwinnett Gladiators on

Oct. 28, T.J. Miller and Darcy Zajac each scored goals in regulation time, and Dave Caruso made 34 saves on 36 shots to lead Trenton to its second win of the 2010-11 season.

After Gwinnett’s Ryan Garbutt chipped in his third tally of the season at 18:27 of the first period to give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead, the Devils stormed out of the gate in the second period by scoring the game’s next two goals to take a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.

In the third period, the Gladiators evened the score once more when Ryan Garbutt notched his second goal of the game at 2:45. After that, the teams exchanged volleys throughout the third period and overtime, with neither team, nor either goaltender willing to blink. In the shootout, Ryan Hayes and Darcy Zajac each beat Billy Sauer with quick wrist shots, and when Dave Caruso was through stopping all four Gwinnett shooters that he faced, the Devils had an exciting 3-2 win to improve their season’s record to 2-3.

Game 06: Gladiators Edge Devils,3-2, in ShootoutDespite third period goals by Tony Zancanaro and J.S. Berube which

erased a 2-0 Gwinnett Gladiators’ lead, and despite Dave Caruso’s ECHL-record 67 saves, the Devils were unable to sweep their-two game series against the Gwinnett Gladiators as Trenton fell, 3-2, in a shootout, on Friday night.

After the Devils rallied in the third period on goals from Tony Zancanaro and

J.S. Berube to force the game into overtime and eventually to a shootout, Ryan Hayes converted the Devils’ first attempt against Chris Carrozzi, with Hayes’ shootout score being his second in as many nights. However, Chris Carrozzi rebounded to stop Jeff Prough, Ryan Ginand, Darcy Zajac and Trevor Kell on the Devils’ next four opportunities. And when Michael Davies and Matt Krug had beaten Dave Caruso with their attempts, the Devils were forced to settle for salvaging just one point from their sixth game of the 2010-11 season.

The Devils and the Gladiators each won a shootout in the teams’ two meetings last week.

During the 2009-10 season, the Trenton Devils were pitted against the Cincinnati Cyclones on six occasions, winning once and losing five times, with two of Trenton’s losses coming by way of the shootout. The Devils went 0-1-2 against the Cyclones in their games at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, and 1-2 in the games on the Cyclones’ home ice at the US Bank Arena.

In the team’s first matchup, on Nov. 17, 2009, the teams traded goals early in the first period and were tied, 1-1, before Cincinnati’s Scott Reynolds answered with the game’s next two goals to lead the Cyclones to a 3-1 victory. In the loss, Dave Caruso stopped 30 of 33 shots, with Jeremy Smith being the winning goaltender between the pipes for Cincinnati by nabbing 16 of Trenton’s 17 shots-on-goal.

The day after Cincinnati’s season-series-opening win, the Trenton Devils got their only victory of the season against the Cincinnati Cyclones, winning by a score of 4-2 at the US Bank Arena. Trenton

rallied for the win after falling behind, 2-0, with unanswered goals by Dan Eves, Brett Wilson, Mike Harder and Jeremy Akeson. Both Wilson’s and Harder’s goals came on the man-advantage, with the Devils’ power play clicking at a rate of 2-for-6 in the contest, while the Cyclones power play was blanked on all eight of their opportunities. Gerald Coleman got the win in the nets by making 37 saves, while surrendering just two goals.

The Devils and Cyclones first met at the Sun National Bank Center to open a three-game series on Dec. 17, 2009. On that night, the Devils overcame a 2-0 deficit with goals by Justin Pender and Jack Combs to force overtime, and eventually a shootout. However, it was Cincinnati taking the game’s bonus-point after Hans Benson scored the shootout-game-winner against Gerald Coleman.

On Dec. 19, 2009, the Cyclones defeated the Devils via a shootout for the second time in as many days when Dustin Sproat was the only player on either squad to successfully convert his

shootout opportunity. In the 5-4 loss, Jeff Prough scored twice for the Devils by notching his seventh and eighth goals of the season.

The Devils fell to the Cyclones on Dec.20, being shutout by Czech-born goaltender Robert Mayer, who stopped all 34 shots he faced. Dwayne Zinger and Maxime Lacroix recorded the game’s only goals, with both scoring past Gerald Coleman with second period markers to lead the Cyclones to a 2-0 victory. The Devils’ power play was 0-for-5 in the defeat.

The team’s final meeting occurred on Jan. 16, 2010 in Cincinnati, with the Cyclones wrapping up the season-series by posting a 5-2 victory. The Devils had led 2-1 following a go-ahead goal by Slavomir Tomko at 9:24 of the second period, however Trenton was unable to protect their lead as the Cyclones responded with the game’s next three goals to take a 4-2 lead, before Maxime Lacroix added an empty-netter at 19:48 of the third period to seal a 5-2 win for the Cyclones.

Jean-Sebastien Berube, a 2008 7th NHL Draft selection of the New Jersey Devils, is in his first season with the Trenton Devils, after spending the past four years with the QMJHL”s Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. After six games with Trenton, the Matane, PQ native is tied with captain Trevor Kell and Ryan Hayes for the team lead with three goals, to go along with an assist and a plus-2 rating.

Q: What was your favorite team growing up? Player?A: My favorite team was ironically the New Jersey Devils. And I’ve had lots of favorite players, however in recent years, I really like how Milan Lucic of the Boston Bruins plays. He’s a big guy who plays physical who scores some goals and I definitely try to model my style after him.

Q: What kind of music do you like to listen to before

a game?A: French rap. With our team, we usually listen to Rock music to get fired up before games, and maybe Country music to relax afterwards. Not a lot of French rap being played in our locker room.

Q: If you could have a super-power, what would it be?A: Not just the ability to heal, but I wish I had the ability to feel no pain.

Q: Favorite vacation place?A: Mexico, or any other place that’s warm.

Q: If you could meet three people, alive or dead, who would they be?A: Muhammad Ali, Tiger Woods and Maurice Richard. They’re all big winners, so I could learn a lot from them.

TRENTON DEVILS (2-3-0-1, 5pts) vs CINCINNATI CYCLONES (1-5-1-1, 4 pts) Game 7 ◦ Friday, November 5, 2010 ◦ 7:00 p.m. ◦ Sun National Bank Center, Trenton, NJ

Cyclones and Devils 2009-10 Season Series in Review

The 2009-10 defending ECHL champion Cincinnati Cyclones make their way into Trenton Friday for the first of only two games the teams will play this season. Both games will be played at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, with the second meeting not until Thanksgiving weekend.

The Cyclones stumble into Friday night’s game with the highest GAA in the ECHL (4.50) and a 1-5-1-1 record, though all four points they’ve collected have come on the road. Cincinnati has allowed 36 goals and scored only 23, the worst margin in the league. Half of those goals-against (18) were yielded during opponents’ power plays, twice the number of power-play goals surrendered as any other team in the ECHL. The Cylcones’ 63% penalty kill rate (31-for-49) is last in the league. On the power play, defenseman T.J. Fast leads the ECHL with three power play goals.

Overall, Cincinnati is led by playmaking forward Dylan Hunter, son of former NHL great Dale Hunter. Dylan has recorded one goal and six assists in six games to start his fifth professional season. With two NHL affiliates (Florida and Nashville), the Cyclones boast multiple solidified prospects, including goaltenders Chet Pickard and Jeremy Smith. On October 27, the Predators moved Smith from Cincinnati to AHL-Milwaukee and reassigned Pickard from Milwaukee to Cincinnati. Goalie Marc Cheverie, defenseman T.J. Fast, and forward James DeLory each have NHL deals with Florida.

The Trenton Devils are coming off a week of relative inactivity, last playing against the Gwinnett Gladiators October 28 and 29, picking up three out of a possible four points with both games ending in a shootout.

Devils goaltender Dave Caruso played both games and set a new ECHL record for saves in a regular season game with 67 Friday night. A former Gladiator, Caruso was expecting to face a lot of rubber. “Gwinnett is a team that will shoot from anywhere,” Caruso said. “When I played for them, their focus was to put shots on net.” Although the game ended in a shootout loss, the Roswell, GA native’s 67 stops eclipsed the previous mark (65) set by Greenville Growl goalie Daniel Bosclair against Greensboro in 2004. “It is an honor to be in the record books,” Caruso said. “Even though I had 69 shots, most of the shots were from the outside.”

Although the shot total skewed in Gwinnett’s favor, the majority of the chances were from the perimeter, making Caruso’s job a tad bit easier. “The defensemen did a great job,” Caruso said. “The new guys seem to

be learning the system very quickly. They kept the shots to the outside and made good first passes and their decision making was very good.” The Devils’ defense has been without Gord Burnett and Andy Thomas, both on IR since the first week of the season, and Dave Leaderer has been with the AHL’s Albany Devils for the last week. Justin Coutu is the most experienced defenseman on Trenton’s active roster, now in his sixth professional season.

Friday’s battle against Cincinnati has sentimental signifgance for first-year Trenton Devils’ coach Kevin Dean who played for the Cyclones in 43 games for the club over two seasons in both ECHL and IHL competition. With Cincinnati, Dean had 28 points, with five goals and 23 assists, including his first goal in professional hockey, during the 1991-92 season. The Madison, WI native and UNH grad played 11 professional seasons.

BRAD MILLS SCORES 1ST NHL GOAL Former Trenton Devils forward Brad Mills scored his first NHL goal Wednesday night, snapping a 2-2 tie with 3:51 remaining in the third period to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 5-3 victory over the defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center. The 27-year-old made his NHL debut with New Jersey October 30 at the Staples Center against the Los Angeles Kings, after 183 career games in the minor leagues.

Mills played 26 games for the Trenton Devils during the 2007-08 season, racking up nine goals and seven assists for sixteen points while accumulating 67 penalty minutes. Before that, Mills skated for four seasons at Yale University from 2003 to 2007, signing with the Devils organization following his senior year in 2007. Mills,

having spent the majority of his professional career with the Devils AHL affiliate (Lowell/Albany), has 49 points and 231 penalty minutes in 157 AHL games.

Born in Terrace, BC, Mills is the 20th Trenton alum to make it to the NHL, and became the second former Trenton player to make his New Jersey Devils debut this season, following defenseman Olivier Magnan who played his first NHL game Oct. 21 at the Bell Centre in Montreal. The 447th player to ever lace up the skates in both the ECHL and the NHL, Mills is the third former Trenton Devil to skate with New Jersey this season: Magnan and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond.

JEFF FRAZEE GETS EMERGENCY CALL UP Former Trenton Devils goaltender Jeff Frazee makes his first appearance on a NHL rostery today, recalled under emergency conditions Friday afternoon from AHL-Albany. With Martin Brodeur out with a bruised elbow, Frazee is expected to be in uniform as Johan Hedberg’s backup for the New Jersey Devils’ game against the New York Rangers Friday night at Prudential Center.

At the time of his promotion, Frazee had appearances in five games for Albany this season, posting a 4-1 record with a 1.83 goals against average (3rd in the AHL) and a .932 save percentage (tied for 4th in the AHL). In 95 career games with the Devils’ AHL affiliate, the fourth-year professional has a 46-39-6 record.

With the Trenton Devils in 2008-09, the 6-0, 195-lb. goaltender went 2-2, with a 2.65 goals against average and .912 save percentage, having appeared in five games. Frazee becomes the third former Trenton player to make his New Jersey Devils debut this season, joining Olivier Magnan and Brad Mills, both of whom played their first NHL games earlier this season.
