FRONT ENTRANCE & DRIVEWAY CONSTRUCTION COMPLETED

Devon Prep’s campus also underwent some changes over the sum-mer with the continuation of the upper school façade renovation project started last year. This project aims to fully integrate the upper school building with the scale and style of Calasanctius Hall, the architectural centerpiece of school’s campus.

This phase, which was funded by a gift to the school and a grant from a local foundation, included a new stone canopy at the front entrance with improved lighting, opening up of the courtyard, and creation of a new driveway entrance to the campus from Valley Forge Road. The construction is now complete.

MR. FIELDING RETIRES; DEVON WELCOMES NEW TEACHERS

As 2010 came to a close Devon Prep said goodbye to longtime Math teacher Mr. Robert Fielding. Mr. Field-ing retired in December. He had been teaching Mathe-matics at Devon for 8 years . We wish him well in his future endeavors.

As you may know, Devon Prep welcomed several new teachers in the Fall including: Mr. Lawrence Theuer, Ms. Melanie Picard, and Mr. Jeffrey Jewitt. Mr.

Charles Hollowell has now joined our faculty and is teaching Mr. Fielding’s classes.

Below is a brief introduction to our newest teachers.

Mr. Lawrence G. Theuer - (middle school English, upper school English, AP English, Public Speaking) Mr. Theuer holds an A.B. degree from Lafayette University and a M.Ed. from Temple University. He comes to Devon Prep with more than 25 years of teaching experience at Chestnut Hill Academy, the Haverford School, and in the Philadelphia School District.

Ms. Melanie R. Picard - (seventh grade Science, eighth grade Science, and tenth grade Anatomy and Physiology) Ms. Picard holds a B.S. degree from St. Joseph’s University. Prior to Devon Prep she taught biology at the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart.

Mr. Jeffrey S. Jewitt - (Physical Education and Health) Mr.

Jewitt holds a BA from Ursinus College. Prior to Dev-on Prep he served as a physical education instructor and men’s varsity soccer coach at The Shipley School.

Mr. Charles J. Hollowell - (Mathematics) - Mr. Hollowell holds a BS from Temple University. He comes to Dev-on from New Hope Academy where he taught Alge-bra I & II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, Con-ceptual Physics and Electronics. Prior to New Hope Academy he spent many years in the electronics in-dustry working for such businesses as ATI Technolo-gies, Inc., NxtWave Communications, and Motorola.

These Devon Prep seniors were recognized for their extraordinary achievement on college level Advanced Place-ment exams taken last spring. Only 18% of the more than one million students who took AP exams in May 2010 performed at a sufficiently high level to merit such recognition.

The AP Program, sponsored by the College Board, is a cooperative educational endeavor between high schools and colleges and universities. Most of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit and/or advanced placement based on successful performances on the AP Exams.

SIX SENIORS RECOGNIZED BY NATIONAL MERIT PROGRAM

Six Devon Prep seniors were recognized by the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Pro-gram as Commended Students. They are: Joseph J. Kozak, Andrew H. Grahn. Michael J. Bentley, Bryan C. Misialek, Alexander M. Sidor, and Alexander B. Reinhart . The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition for recog-nition and scholarships. More than 1.5 mil-lion students in over 22,000 U.S. high schools enter the Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Commended students are among 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® who were recognized for their outstanding academic promise. On average, 20% of Devon Prep’s graduates are named as Commended Students, Semi-finalists or Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program each year.

FRESHMEN GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER THROUGH ADVENTURE IN EDUCATION

Devon Prep’s Guidance Department sponsored an Adventure in Education Day for the members of the freshman class in early September. The goal of this interactive learning experience is to strengthen the developing bond among the members of the Class of 2014 as they begin their high school journey.

Throughout the day the 46 young men had the opportunity to develop trust and increase their skills in communication, listening, goal setting, team-building, problem solving, respecting individual differences within a group and being responsible for their own actions. While improving these valuable skills, all the participants challenged themselves emotionally and physically.

2010-11 STUDENT COUNCIL EXECUTIVE BOARD

Six students serve on the Middle School and Upper School Student Council Executive Board for the 2010-11 school year.

Members of Devon Prep’s student council are elected by fellow students. The council not only mediates between administration, faculty, and the student body, but also administers and finances most of the student activi-ties at Devon Prep. Events such as the middle school mixers, tailgates, prom, and various other activities are organized and managed by the Stu-dent Council.

Student council members, especially the executive board, often represent Devon Prep’s student body at events both on and off campus, such as Open House, Spring TIDE and the Headmaster’s Reception. Participation in the Student Council provides training for leadership, service, and loyalty.

AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ECOLOGY FIELD TRIP

Devon Prep’s AP Environmental Science class, led by Mr. Roger Mecouch, participated in a full day ecology field trip to several locations in New Jersey. They examined five different and distinct habitats or ecosystems, including a cranberry bog, a freshwater bog, a pygmy forest, a salt marsh, and the shore community. Throughout the trip the students were engaged in field activities involving the ecology and wildlife. At each site they had to identify abiotic (physical) characteristics of the habitat, and locate and identify cer-tain characteristic organisms normally found in each environment.

The goal of the AP Environmental Science course is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts and methodologies required to under-stand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associ-ated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.

JUNIORS RECEIVE RINGS

GRANDPARENTS & SPECIAL OTHERS DAY

More than 200 grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings and friends visited Devon Prep on Wednesday, November 24 for our annual “Grandparents and Special Others Day.”

Middle School and Upper School students hosted their special guests in the gym where they feasted on a continental brunch. After being welcomed by Headmaster Rev. James Shea, they were entertained by members of Devon Prep’s Music Socie-ty under the direction of Dr. Valentin Radu. Before leaving for the day many of the students took their guests for a tour of the school, to meet teachers, and a stop in the Devon Shop.

SOPHOMORES LEARN TO SAVE LIVES

For the 20th year Devon Prep’s sophomore class participated in the American Heart Association’s Heart Saver course joining the more than 1000 Devon students who have been trained in CPR over the past two decades. Each year the sophomore class is taught about the Chain of Survival and the important part they can play in helping victims of “sudden death” survive long enough to receive treatment with ad-vanced techniques.

Film, hands-on experience, and lectures were used to teach the signs and signals of heart attack, stroke, and foreign body airway obstruc-tion (choking). The students learned to evaluate breathlessness and pulselessness enabling them to know when to use CPR and abdominal thrusts (also known as the Heimlich maneuver).

Hands-on lessons were demonstrated on two types of mannequins, an adult torso and an infant, in order to learn how to perform these life saving skills on people of different sizes. In addition they were taught how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

According to Devon Prep’s School Nurse Mrs. Denise Gavin, who coor-dinated the CPR training, cardiovascular disease is still the number one health problem in the US. “The ability to respond and resuscitate someone long enough to receive advanced care is phenomenally re-warding,” she said. “Only 20% of sudden deaths are resuscitated. That 80% is where these young people can make a difference.”

Devon Prep Juniors received their high school rings during a special Mass celebrated by Headmaster Rev. James Shea, and concelebrated by Rev. Geza Pazmany, Rev. Richard Wyzykiewicz and Rev. Nelson Henao on December 9. Faculty, parents, and family were in attendance as the rings were blessed and distributed to each young man by Father Shea. Music for the Mass was provided by The Faithful Band of St. John Chrysostom Parish in Wallingford. After the Mass a reception was held in Calasanctius Hall.

HUGH PHELAN EARNS EAGLE SCOUT

Congratulations to Junior Hugh Phelan who recently achieved The Eagle Scout rank, the most prestig-ious rank that a Boy Scout can earn. This rank represents strength of character and knowledge.

Hugh is a member of Troop Devon 50. He chose the historic Harriton Cemetery of Lower Merion as the site of his Eagle project, cleaning and beautifying the area as well as renovating the trail back to the cemetery. He serves as a senior patrol leader, previously holding the positions of historian and patrol leader. Hugh plays tennis and basketball and is an accomplished musician, having won several piano competitions and now playing viola in the Philadelphia Sin-fonia Youth Orchestra. Hugh comes from a family of Eagle Scouts as his grandfather, uncle and brother also earned their Eagle ranks at Devon 50.

STUDENTS INDUCTED INTO QUILL & SCROLL SOCIETY

Twelve juniors and seniors were inducted into the Quill and Scroll Socie-ty, the international honor society for high school journalists, during a ceremony in Calasanctius Hall. The ceremony included the distribution of the badge of membership, honor cords for the seniors, and a candle lighting ceremony.

In order to qualify for membership students must: have a GPA of 3.5 or higher in the last 2 semesters; produce superior work in some phase of high school journalism; submit at least 2 quality articles in the last year; be recommended by the Devon Prep Quill and Scroll committee; and be approved by the Society’s executive director.

RECENT GRADS RETURN

Four members of the Class of 2010, Brendan Fulmer (Loyola Univer-sity), Ed Welsh (Virginia Tech), Tom Hallinan (St. Joseph’s University) and Pete DeLong (University of Scranton), returned to Devon to talk to the senior class about their experiences as college freshmen. They addressed dealing with roommate issues, scheduling classes, managing their study time and free time, making friends, and getting involved in campus activities.

DEVON PREP PRESENTS “DON’T DRINK THE WATER”

Devon Prep’s Theater Program presented Woody Allen's stage comedy "Don't Drink The Water" as its 2010 annual fall production directed by Mr. Carl Gediek. All of the action was set in an American Embassy in an eastern European Communist country during the Cold War. An American family of tourists

escaped to the embassy when mistaken for spies. Witty and observant dia-logue, madcap subplots, a young love interest, and hilarious situations all combined for a very enter-taining and fast-moving play. Starring were Devon Prep upper school and middle school students as well as young ladies from area schools.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

FRENCH CREEK CAMPING TRIP

Every September Devon Prep’s Mid-dle School students and faculty go on an overnight camping trip to French Creek State Park in Kimberton, PA.

This trip allows the sixth, seventh and eighth graders to become familiar with camping and each other. They cook over an open fire, hike, play games, and generally get to know one another. FALL SPIRIT DAY

Devon Prep’s Middle School homerooms participated in Fall Spirit Day with events taking place in the gym, the parking lot, and the athletic field. They competed in indoor hockey, 3 point shootout, an obstacle course, donut eating contests, track & field events, remote control car races, and more. The day ended with a tug of war between fac-ulty and the winning 8th grade homeroom.

HALLOWEEN PARTY

Devon Prep’s Middle School students attended the annual Halloween Party on Friday, October 29 in the ghoulishly deco-rated cafeteria. They were treated to a table full of cookies, cupcakes, candy and other sweets provided by Middle School moms and dads. They paraded in their costumes before a panel of guest judges looking for the scariest, funniest and most creative outfit.

They eve wrapped classmates in toilet paper for fun. Even Mrs. I won a prize for dressing as “Lady

Devon Prep.”

OVER 80% OF DEVON PREP 7TH & 8TH GRADERS QUALIFY FOR JOHNS HOPKINS CTY SEARCH Three Students Receive High Honors

More than 80% of Devon Prep’s seventh and eighth grade students, 19 seventh graders and 28 eighth graders, qualified for the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY) Search. CTY, a world leader in gifted education, conducts national and international talent search-es to identify, assess, and recognize outstanding academic talent.

These 47 students qualified for the CTY Search by scoring in the 95th percentile or above on standardized tests last year and by demon-strating superior academic performance. As a result they were eligible to take the ACT or SAT (designed for high school jun-iors and seniors) as middle school students.

In addition, three of these stu-dents, Eighth Graders James Lucas (left), and Russell Emery (center) and Seventh Grader Shyamal Patel, received a Cer-tificate of High Honors.

TWELVE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS INDUCTED INTO THE NJHS

Congratulations to the 12 seventh and eighth graders inducted into the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). The new inductees are: Eighth Grad-ers Russell T. Emery and William J. Moreno; and Seventh Graders Andrew R. Betts, Alexander S. Bygrave, Alexandru Damian, Sean A. Fulmer, Enoch S. Lee, Joshua Y. Lee, Shyamal B. Patel, John F. Par-kinson, Robert P. Pickell, and Maximilian H. van Schaijik.

More than just an honor roll, the NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excel-lence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Ser-vice, Character and Citizenship. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the or-ganization since its beginning in 1929.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NJHS. NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

SEVENTH GRADERS BUILD CELLS Seventh grade students in Ms. Picard’s Life Science class were challenged to create a representation of either a plant or animal cell using common “junk drawer” materials. Items ranging from play dough, rubber bands, toothpicks, and skittles were crea-tively arranged to serve as a cell organelles, nucleus and membrane.

COLOR FUN IN SPANISH

Who knew learning colors in a foreign language could be so much fun? The seventh graders in Ms. Bosma’s Spanish class cleverly used the game Twister to learn their colors. They also learned how to describe a Devon Prep uniform in Spanish as well.

CAP SPONORS SERVICE PROJECTS The members of Devon Prep’s Christian Action Program (CAP), under the guid-ance of Mrs. Elizabeth Eshleman, wasted no time getting their charitable projects underway this year.

School Supplies Drive Throughout the summer they collected school supplies for the children living in and around St. Elizabeth’s Community Center in North Philadelphia.

They collected over 4,300 items from Devon Prep families. Among the items were pencils, notebooks, crayons, pens, erasers, scissors, rulers, glue sticks, index cards, folders, highlighters, backpacks and just about anything else needed to start school. Up for a Cause In October CAP sponsored the Upper School “Up for a Cause” to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. About 140 students participated in this 12 hour event which raised nearly $25,000.

Helping Devon Prep kick off this year’s “Up for a Cause” were members of The North Philadelphia Foot Stompers, an award winning youth drum corps sponsored by Project H.O.M.E.

Harvest Tide Food Drive November brought the annual Harvest Tide Food Drive, ensuring that families in North Philadelphia would have food for Thanksgiving and beyond. Thanks to the generosity of the Devon Prep community, the sixth through 12th graders collected more than 5,300 food items and nearly 50 turkeys. Among the food donations were canned vegetables and soups, jars of apple sauce and jams, boxes of pasta, stuffing, rice and mashed potatoes, tomato sauce, tuna fish, peanut butter and more.

All of this food, filling over 150 cartons, was blessed during a Mass in the school’s gym. After the Mass the donations were loaded onto a truck and delivered by CAP members to the Project H.O.M.E. Food Cupboard at St. Elizabeth’s Community Center in North Philadelphia. Mrs. Helen Brown, Director of Project H.O.M.E, and several volunteers were on hand to gratefully accept Devon Prep’s generous donations.

Christmas Giving Tree In December CAP sponsored a Giving Tree for the holiday sea-son. They collected nearly 200 presents which included new clothing, hats, gloves, towels and gift certificates. The gifts were donated to Safe Harbor Homeless Shelter in West Chester and St. Elizabeth’s Community Center in North Philadelphia.

Two groups of Devon Prep students traveled to one of the poorest areas of the country to perform service. This past summer a group of Devon Prep students, along with members of the Our Lady of Assumption Youth Group, participated in a mission trip to the beautiful Appalachian Moun-tains in Kentucky, where the poverty rate is 3X that of the nation. Their destination was Odd Fellows Youth Camp in Prestonsburg, Kentucky where the Piarist Fathers operate a school, and where St. Agnes Catholic Church is located.

Devon Prep Religion Teacher Mr. Joe Lewis led the school’s contingent of nine students and several parents and siblings on this week long mission trip. They worked on several projects including: building handicap ramps at two houses so their inhabitants could to come and go easily; building part of a drop ceiling in the Piarist Fathers school; landscaping and lawn work at St. Agnes Catholic Church (where the only Catholic priest in the

county resides); landscaping, cleaning, and helping distribute textbooks throughout the classrooms at the Piarist school; visiting some of the families in the "hollows" and distributing canned goods; gen-eral clean-up and moving of materials at the Odd Fellows campsite for the outreach program; making material and cash donations to the Piarist School, St. Agnes Church, and the Piarist Outreach Pro-gram.

STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN TWO KENTUCKY MISSION TRIPS

The second trip took place in December, the week before Christmas. The eight juniors and seniors traveled 13 hours to the Appalachian Re-gion of Southeastern Kentucky with Fr. Richard Wyzykiewicz and Mr. Lewis to help the poor. They spent several days escorting Santa as he delivered donated Christmas presents and food baskets to area families. They worked with local volunteers associated with the Piarist Fathers.

MARK AQUILANTE NAMED ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Last summer Devon Prep Headmaster Rev. James Shea, Sch. P. announced the appointment of 1994 alumnus Mr. Mark A. Aquilante as Athletic Director.

Mr. Aquilante has taught middle school history and physical education at Devon Prep since 1999. He has also served as the Assistant Director of the Middle School, Middle School Activities Coordinator, Middle School Basketball Coach and Upper School JV Baseball Coach. Most recently he served as the Assistant Athletic Di-rector and Head Coach of the Upper School Varsity Baseball Team which won the PIAA Class AA District 1 championship in June 2010.

VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM WINS RADNOR TOURNAMENT

Devon Prep’s Varsity Basketball Team won the Radnor Tournament Championship in mid- December by defeating Radnor High School, 44-39. Duncan Becker scored 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. He was named MVP after recording 45 points and 29 rebounds in 2 games. Kyle Koehler was named to the all-tournament team.

The Tide had previously defeated Chiches-ter, 61-54, in round one of the Tourna-ment. In that game Duncan Becker paced Devon and led all scorers with 23 points. Kyle Koehler added 17 points and 9 boards of his own. Steve Kohlbrenner contributed seven steals on the defensive end.

Devon Prep’s Parents Association sponsored Oktoberfest for dads, grads and friends in Calasanctius Hall in mid October. They enjoyed German food, drinks and the opportunity to gather with old friends and meet new ones.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION HOSTS SEVERAL ANNUAL EVENTS

MOTHERS’ COVERED DISH DINNER

The traditional Mothers’ Covered Dish Dinner took place in early Sep-tember in Devon’s gym. Nearly 100 moms attended this delightful even-ing filled with shopping, food and plenty of chatting. For new Devon moms it was a chance to meet and get to know other mothers. For the senior mothers, however, the evening was bittersweet as it was the first of many “lasts” this year.

CHRISTMAS GALA

Kicking off the holiday season on Saturday, December 4, Devon Prep’s Parents’ Association hosted their Christmas Gala in the beautifully deco-rated Calasanctius Hall. DEVON PREP IN THE NEWS

WE NEED YOUR HELP Devon Prep is conducting the following Drives and asks for your generosity:

CLOTHING DRIVE If you've been cleaning your closets, don't just throw away all your outgrown clothing. CAP will be collecting clothing (and blankets, jackets etc...) for the less fortu-nate. Gently used, clean clothing can be dropped off in Mrs. Eshleman's Office between now and January 31.

BABY DRIVE As we build up to the March-for-Life, the Pro-Life Club is seeking the following items for our collection: Similac Advance and Isomil Baby Formulas; diapers (any size); wipes; clothes such as onesies, booties, and socks. Monetary donations are also encouraged. Please make checks out to "Nutritional Development Services."

Donations can be brought to school until the day of the March - Monday, January 24. There will be prizes given to the winning homerooms in each class and for the Mid-dle School.

In addition, each student who makes a donation to the Drive will receive a dress-down day! Contact Mr. Joe Lewis with any questions.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE Devon will be hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive on Thurs-day, February 17, 2011 in the gym. Students 16 years and older (with parental consent) and family members are encouraged to donate. More information will be available in the upcoming weeks.

RALLY AND MARCH FOR LIFE - MONDAY, JANUARY 24

As he has for many years, Devon Prep Headmaster Fr. James Shea will lead students, parents, and faculty on a trip to Washington D.C. on Monday, January 24 for the Rally and March for Life. This Rally and March marks the anniversary of the US Supreme Court decision to legalize abortion. Each year two thirds of the student body attend this event. This totally peaceful event is encouraging because a huge number of participants are young people. Busses will leave from Devon Prep about 9 AM on the 24th and will return about 9 PM.

If your son plans to attend the March, please note that essential medications must be given to Mrs. Gavin, Devon Prep’s School Nurse, and permission forms must be returned to Fr. Shea by January 18.
