From the “incorrigible showman” Chris Isaak to the iconic Smokey Robinson to the 2010 Academy of Country Music Award Top New Vocal Group Gloriana, the summer lineup is an eclectic mix of talent and musical genres. To top it off, we invite you to join us on August 23 for the Taft Presents 2013-2014 Season Kick-Off event with a supremely sensational performance by the legendary Diana Ross. Earlier in June, the Center held the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony as part of the Krieg DeVault Encore Celebration Weekend. It was an exciting event designed to honor the legends of the American Songbook. This year we honored the musical contributions of Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Rita Moreno, and Jimmy Webb. This summer, we have the privilege of welcoming extraordinary young vocalists from all parts of the country, representing a wide spectrum of talent. The Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy & Competition will welcome a new 2013 youth ambassador on July 26. Many of you have deepened your relationship with the Center for the Performing Arts by becoming a subscriber or donor. Thank you for your support! ACCESSIBILITYAccessible Parking: Accessible parking is available on the Center Green’s loop driveway, just south of the Palladium. Additional accessible valet parking is available at the west entrance on 3rd Avenue.

Arrival: Street level and elevator access is available in the Palladium’s West Lobby located at the 3rd Avenue entrance and is also available in the East Lobby located near the Monon Greenway.

Seating: Wheelchair accessible seating is located in various sections of the venues. Special seating arrangements may be made in advance by calling the box office at 317.843.3800.

PARKINGValet: Beginning 1 hour before the performance time, valet parking is available on the Center Green’s loop driveway, at the Palladium’s south entrance. The valet service is sponsored by Tom Wood Jaguar & Land Rover. The valet service is $10 or is complimentary for Jaguars and Land Rovers. Valet is only available for Center Presents performances at the Palladium.

Self-Park: Secure, on-site garage parking is located south of the Palladium. Enter the Center’s parking garage off 3rd Avenue.

RESTROOMS Restrooms are located in the lower Salon level, Payne & Mencias Box Tier and Gallery level of the Palladium, and on the first floor in the lobby of the Studio Theater and the Tarkington (all restrooms are handicap accessible.)

COAT CHECKCoat check services are available on a seasonal basis at the east and west sides of the lower Salon level near the restrooms at the Palladium. Coat room facilities are also available at the Tarkington and the Studio Theater.

FOOD & BEVERAGE Concessions are available before the performance through intermission. Food is not permitted in the theaters. Beverages are allowed depending on the artist preferences.

BASILE CAFÉ Basile Café is located in the East Lobby (for more information and hours of operation see page 9.)

ASSISTED LISTENING DEVICES Assisted listening devices are available free of charge. Please see an usher to request one.

ELECTRONIC DEVICESUse of cellular phones, pagers, cameras and recording devices are strictly prohibited in the theater. Please deactivate sounds on any electronic device so it will not disrupt the performance.

LATE ARRIVAL POLICY Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of house management. Video and audio simulcast of the performance is available in the lobbies for your convenience.

EMERGENCY PROCEDUREIn the event of an emergency, you will be instructed by an announcement indicating the best method of exit. Please notice the multiple red exit signs. For your safety, please exit in a calm and orderly manner.

POLICY ON CHILDREN Children 4 and older are welcome to attend performance. Children of all ages are welcome at Family Shows.

NO SMOKINGThe Center for the Performing Arts campus is smoke-free.

WEATHER POLICY The Center does not cancel performances due to inclement weather.

TOURS Group tours of the Palladium are offered twice a month. For more information, visit the Center’s website and click on The Center Tour. Or you may stop by the Box Office during normal business hours for a brief look pending availability.

FACILITY RENTALIndividuals, businesses and performing groups may rent seven distinct spaces suitable for your special event as well as the Palladium (1,600 seats), the Tarkington (500 seats) or the Studio Theater (200 seats). What makes someone a legend?

Can it be traced back to that special kiss on the cheek they received from the almighty God on high upon birth? Does it come from their own sense of confidence and belief aided by dogged persistence and determination to bet on themselves? Is it preordained or perhaps most of all … could it be a function of good marketing and public relations? Also, what roles do captivated admirers play in this stage drama?

Truth be told, it’s probably a little bit of all of that. Hold that thought.

Without a doubt, many if not most people view Miss Ross as a beautiful, world class, singing, acting and dancing superstar; the diva for all time. Yes, that’s true.

Yet for this long time observer, that portrait is somewhat limiting and certainly incomplete. If nothing else, Miss Ross is a stunning symbol of self-actualization. If you can dream it, you can be it. She’s at the core of this thing we call our grand, American Dream. You know, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” In this challenging time, we haven’t forgotten that, have we?

She may not have been on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement, but her supreme efforts paved a way for millions of people of all races; people saw her and

instantly knew she was on to something … the concept that a person need not be defined by any of the labels or restrictions that society places on us.

Miss Ross told us that if we so choose, we can sing a different song that’s born of our desire to make a difference in this world. We can travel, we can learn new languages, we can expand our reality and we can drink in the entire universe with our own doe-eyed gazes and share the secrets we’ve uncovered with others who are also brave enough to risk criticism by soaring as close as we can to that humongous spotlight in the sky. That wasn’t really a run on sentence … that was me merely holding a lovely note.

In short, Miss Ross is a person who had a dream, but more importantly, the guts to get out there and make it reality. Believe me Miss Ross, I know. It hasn’t been all crystal stairs, but what a glorious ride nonetheless. Life remains a gift. We’re here for only one go ‘round, so why not maximize our lives? That’s what she has taught us … all of these years.

Remember the concert in Central Park? I was one of those people – right up front - who cheered beneath those dark, ominous clouds and got wetter thanwet in that ridiculous downpour. We couldn’t believe it. Yet I was also one of those people – again, right up front – who basked in the greatness of that moment on the very next day when she appeared in that red and purple cloud, but not before shouting …“IT’S A NEW DAY!”

That’s what happens when you’re committed to a dream…not just the dream itself, but the reality beyond the dream that can actually come true. For believers, every day is a new day. The park was a legendary moment.

Which brings me back to that legend thing. The word “legendary” is synonymous with “heroic” and “superhuman.” Quite dramatic, but do you know what I think makes someone legendary? It’s when they quietly face their own humanity, grab hold of their fears and march forward in pursuit of that impossible dream. It’s when the clouds open and rain down blessings that marry destiny and desire.

Legends all have one thing in common. They’ve made the impossible possible and in the process, given us all better songs to sing about our own possibilities.

Does that describe Miss Ross? It does indeed.

Once pronounced by Bob Dylan as America’s “greatest living poet,” acclaimed singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson’s career spans over 4 decades of hits. He has received numerous awards including the Grammy Living Legend Award, NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award, Honorary Doctorate (Howard University), Kennedy Center Honors and the National Medal of Arts Award from the President of the United States. He has also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Robinson founded The Miracles while still in high school. The group was Berry Gordy’s first vocal group, and it was at Robinson’s suggestion that Gordy started the Motown Record dynasty. Their single of Robinson’s “Shop Around” became Motown’s first #1 hit on the R&B singles chart. In the years following, Robinson continued to pen hits for the group including “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” “Ooo Baby Baby,” “The Tracks of My Tears,” “Going to a Go-Go,” “More Love,” “Tears of a Clown” (co-written with Stevie Wonder), and “I Second That Emotion.”

The Miracles dominated the R&B scene throughout the 1960’s and early 70’s and Robinson became Vice President of Motown Records serving as in-house producer, talent scout and songwriter.

In addition to writing hits for the Miracles, Robinson wrote and produced hits for other Motown greats including The Temptations, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway, Marvin Gaye and others. “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “My Girl,” “Get

Ready,” “You Beat Me to the Punch,” “Don’t Mess with Bill,” “Ain’t That Peculiar,” and “My Guy” are just a few of his songwriting triumphs during those years.

John Lennon of The Beatles made countless remarks regarding Robinson’s influence on his music. The Beatles had recorded Robinson and The Miracles’ “You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me” in 1963 and in 1982 another popular British group, The Rolling Stones covered the Robinson and the Miracles’ hit “Going To A Go-Go.”

He later turned to a solo career where he continued his tradition of hitmaking with “Just to See Her,” “Quiet Storm,” “Cruisin’,” and “Being with You,” among others.

He remained Vice President of Motown records until the sale of the company, shaping the label’s success with friend and mentor Berry Gordy. Following his tenure at Motown, he continued his impressive touring career and released several successful solo albums.

During the course of his 50-year career in music, Robinson has accumulated more than 4,000 songs to his credit and continues to thrill sold-out audiences around the world with his high tenor voice, impeccable timing, and profound sense of lyric. Never resting on his laurels, Smokey Robinson remains a beloved icon in our musical heritage.

ABOUT THE CENTER AND INITIATIVE In May of 2011, the board of directors at the Center for the Performing Arts voted on an affiliation with the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative. The organizations’ individual boards cited a shared vision and a desire to maximize resources as the deciding factor to create an affiliation between the two non-profit 501(c)3 organizations.

The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative is located on the Gallery level of the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts. In addition to an expansive archive, gallery and administrative offices, the Initiative produces the Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy and Competition. The national endeavor is the only high school competition in the U.S. dedicated solely to the music from Broadway, Hollywood musicals and the Tin Pan Alley era of the early to mid-twentieth century.

As Artistic Director at the Center for the Performing Arts, Michael Feinstein curates the Songbook concert series and leads the Center’s musical programming. Given the origin in Indiana of such legendary songwriters as Cole Porter and Hoagy Carmichael, the Palladium concert hall provides a home for this treasure trove of American music — both physically and artistically.

Families, scholars and guests to the Palladium have the opportunity to discover the Great American Songbook via the combined resources — and concert programming — offered by the Center for the Performing Arts and the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative.

Tania Castroverde Moskalenko was named the President/CEO of the Center for the Performing Arts in June 2012. She is a dynamic leader who possesses a rare combination of exemplary management skills, a passion for the performing arts, and a 14-year history of leading strong, financially viable arts centers. Previously, she served as Executive Director of the Germantown Performing Arts Centre (GPAC), in Tennessee where she erased an operating deficit, tripled programming, and inclreased education programs by 279%.

Michael FeinsteinArtistic DirectorThe Center for the Performing ArtsMichael Feinstein, the multi-platinum selling, five-time Grammy-nominated entertainer dubbed “The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook,” is considered one of the premier interpreters of American Popular Song. More than a mere performer, he is nationally recognized for his commitment to the American Popular Song, both celebrating its art and preserving its legacy for the next generation. In addition to serving as Artistic Director, Mr. Feinstein performs frequently at the Center for the Performing Arts and assists with programming.
