Bonding With You #3 A new Shining Stars Preschool to replace the current aging campus will open during the 2018-19 school year, according to a recently-approved timeline for 2016 voter-approved bond projects. The other major 2016 project, Joe Harris Elementary School, should open in August 2019. Other technology and facilities projects will be phased in over the next several years. Did You Know? CALENDAR EVENTS Budding photographers are picturing themselves successful at Independence High School as part of IHS’s JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) program. Four students have developed a sustainable enterprise providing photography services to the staff and students of Independence High School. Lianna Garza, one of the CEOs of Soaring Images, explained, “We believe it is important to offer professional photography to families at a great price”. Students are responsible for creating the backdrops for the shoots, scheduling appointments, taking pictures, and delivering the final product to clients. There have been two photo shoots: an outdoor fall carnival and an indoor winter theme, giving students the opportunity to utilize different kinds of lighting techniques. Great photographs aren’t the only benefit of this program, as students learn a skill they will use throughout life: interacting with clients. “I’m more social, comfortable and confident with my photography skills through this business”, said Antonio Castillo. Colleague Shyann Sanchez agreed, adding, “I love the interaction with my photo subjects. When I hold a camera I’m an art/masterpiece creator.” The fourth member of the enterprise, Kyara Robinson, commented, “I love seeing the world through a different lens”. The fledgling business has benefited from different mentors including RRPS staff member, Denis Desaindes, a photographer in his own right. “These students are extremely receptive to suggestions and eager to ask questions that will enhance their skills”, he said. “It’s exciting to work with them.” JAG is a school-to-career program that has been implemented in 1,000 high schools, colleges and middle schools across the USA. IHS JAG Specialist Celeste Parrish is especially enthusiastic about Soaring Images. “I am proud of the work my JAG students have accomplished this year. Their effort and dedication to the success of our program has definitely set the bar for what it truly means to be a leader in school and in the community.” Did your student ride the bus on December 1st?
