Digital audio recording & editing Audacity Audacity is installed in the Tech Courtyard in the Bertrand Library. Microphones are available at the Loaner Pool desk. Audacity is freeware that can be download to your personal computer. Tutorials can be accessed at this website: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/tutorials . Note, when working with a Mac you may need to indicate the audio device you wish to use rather than the built-in microphone. To change to a USB mic input: plug in the mic, go to System Preferences, click on the audio icon and choose USB mic from the list. Windows computers will recognize that new hardware has been installed. Place curser on the waveform Click and drag across the area you want to select. Description of the selected tool. Control - Rec, Stop Pause, etc Zoom control. Export your sound file as a Wave file. You cannot export directly to MP3in Audacity at this time. Use iTunes to convert a Wave file to MP3, Be sure to set the stereo bit rate to 48kbps, this is found in the iTunes preferences > Advanced > Custom > Stereo Bit Rate 48kbps.

QuickTime Pro is an easy to use audio recording software that enablesusers to do simple audio editing. If you are need of a more sophisticatedediting program try a program like Audacity. QTP is available in theTech Courtyard and the video editing suite in the Bertrand Library.

Plug in USB microphone.Open QuickTime. File > New AudioRecording. Click red button to begin recording, click black box to stop.

To edit your recording, place mouse onthe bar. Then move the slider to theportion of recording that you want to copy or delete.

You can now export your sound file asa wave file. File > Export. Use the pop out menu to select the Waveformat. Wave files can be added toyour iTunes library and then convertedto MP3 for use on a webpage or in podcasting. Be sure to set the stereobit rate to 48 kbps, this is found in the iTunes preferences > Advanced > Importing > Custom > MP3 Encoder >Stereo Bit Rate > 48 kbps.
