IntroductionThe Secret Dinosaur series is available from specialist school suppliers such as Peters and Madeleine Lindley as well as Wordery and Amazon UK.

The short, fun activities in this booklet can be used for children in KS1 and KS2 and are based on the Dinotek characters in The Secret Dinosaur books. You can find detailed creative writing activities, based on the books at Secret Dinosaur KS2 and KS1 Creative Writing Classroom Activities.

The series has been used by Hodder Education in its literacy textbook for children in LKS2, alongside writers such as Michael Morpurgo and Holly Webb, because of the exciting writing that is perfect for engaging young readers.

The author of the series, N.S.Blackman, has been shortlisted for the Hull Children's Book Award by Hull Schools Library Service. He is available for school author visits to visit the whole school, a year group, KS1 or KS2. See www.dinosaurbooks.co.uk for more information.

It’s easy to make your pictures look great – just like the pictures do in The Secret Dinosaur.

In the Secret Dinosaur books, the pictures are black and white but you can see some great Dinotek pictures, in colour, on the Dinotek website:

http://dinoteks.com/your-dinotek-pictures.html

On the sheet below, you can see how to colour in the Dinotek T-Rex's head. The Dinotek T-Rex is called Flame and he gets his name from the wonderful golden colour of his head, so it’s a great picture to colour in.

STEP 1

Select your colouring pencils – match your pencils as closely as possible to the colours shown

in the squares at the bottom of the Flame picture.

STEP 2

Using the pre-coloured picture of Flame as guide, shade very lightly – using the lightest colours first. Do not press too hard on the pencil. For some small patches, do not colour at all – and these areas, called highlights – will make your pictures seem very realistic.

STEP 3

Move on to the darker pencils. Remember not to press hard and keep shading lightly!

Follow the pre-coloured picture as a guide, using the darker colours where you see them on

that picture – but remember this is your picture, so do not worry if it does not look exactly

the same. Blend some of the darker colours over the lighter areas, but only in patches.

STEP 4

Use the darkest colour – the purple, last of all. Keep shading lightly and put in a few patches

of purple, blending it into the orange to give a great metallic effect.

Don’t forget to draw Flame’s eye! And remember your picture is your own unique work and

no two pictures look exactly the same.
